Lloyd Bowen Presented With Service Recognition Award
DMA President Pete Vriesenga presents award to Lloyd Bowen at the 6/30/14 Membership Meeting
DMA President Vriesenga presents award to Lloyd Bowen for exceptional service to the DMA
Lloyd's early career goes back to 1938 when he was performing weekend road tours with the "band of the year," Jack Teagarden. Lloyd's colorful career takes you back to the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and the amazing Jumbo show at the Hippodrome in New York. He was active in musical theatre, ballroom orchestras, radio and live television. During WWII Lloyd enlisted in the Army and joined the 186th Field Artillery Band, which ultimately brought him to Lowry Field in Denver.

Lloyd recently retired from the DMA Board after many years of service to the DMA. At our June 30 Membership Meeting, Lloyd was presented with the following award in recognition for his service:

Lloyd Bowen Service Award
Presented to
Lloyd Bowen
on June 30, 2014
by the members of the Denver Musicians Association

In recognition of your musicianship, both as a performer and bandleader
For your dedicated service as a DMA Officer and Vice-President
And your membership in the AFM since 1946

The Diamond Empire Band Violates Colorado Consumer Protection Act - don't play along with it
By Pete Vriesenga

DEB Logo The Diamond Empire Band entered the Denver market in Nov. 2013 using fraudulent marketing materials.  With a slick-looking but fraudulent press kit - and a web site filled with forged audio tracks, video demos, and photos - they started booking weddings.

None of the audio recordings, videos, pictures or claims actually belong to this band. The band you are seeing, hearing and reading about is actually a New York based band that is comprised of studio musicians.  That's not who Colorado customers will get at their event - they'll get a totally different band.  It is a bait-and-switch.

Audio and video demos are the most important, gold standard "product samples" professional bands use. They are the single most critical area in which customers have a right to expect authenticity.

Boettcher Hall

The Colorado Symphony will not vacate Boettcher Concert Hall during the 2014-2015 season after all, Symphony public relations manager Laura Bond told CPR on Thursday.

"We know that we're here at least through the end of the 2014-2015 season and then it's up in the air," Bond said in a phone interview. "We're viewing this as a temporary fix to get us through the next season."

Bond explained the Symphony is currently in discussions with its landlord, Denver Arts & Venues, about the terms of its relationship with the city going forwards.

Celebratory fireworks featured at Independence Day concert!

Fireworks have dazzled and delighted people during times of jubilation since their invention in 7th century China. Fireworks reflect a perfect synergy of artistry and scientific knowledge when colorful flashes of light (red, orange, blue) are created from burning elemental combinations (strontium, calcium, and copper).

When the Philharmonic celebrates the 238th birthday of the United States, you can bet there will be a spectacular fireworks display at the free concert. And courtesy of Fort Carson, the thunderous booming of fireworks will be accompanied by cannon during Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

Invite your family and friends and plan to join us for a fabulous 4th of July filled with plenty of fun, music, and fireworks!

LABOR & POLITICS

It Ain't Easy Bein Sleazy!!
By Rod Taylor
Rod Taylor

Maybe it's a sign of the times or maybe it's a sign of my aging warped sense of humor, but my new "funniest stuff of all time" these days consists of watching the political shenanigans of our Congress on the TV news.  It's funnier than anything else on TV and cheaper than going to the movies! If you'd like to join me and indulge yourself in these little flights of fantasy , first, you have to concede that our Congress is broken, permanently and irretrievably.

Secondly, you have allow yourself to visualize everything you see in the context of an "Abbot and Costello meets The Three Stooges" movie and then wrap that up in a Road Runner cartoon surrounded by a Soap Opera. Third you have to come to grips with the fact that this is as good as it's gonna get and you're paying out around $174,000 annual salary 435 times in order for this little fracas to take place!  Fourth, it helps if you give some of your main characters pet names. I have names like "Moonpie" and "Bubba," Eric Cantor was going to be "Pooder" until a couple of weeks ago. Certain characters will always have their own special names that can't change. As a for instance, Sarah Palin has always been known as "Moma Grizzly" and shall be for all time. Following the Mississippi Republican primary, the wrong side won (according to Sarah) and we can only imagine her taking a little Thad Cochran doll back to her Moma Grizzly cave where she promptly chewed it's head off! Lastly, we need a "special" personality to announce the evening news. My vote would have gone to Richard Pryor if he was still around. My alternatives would be someone like Dave Chappelle or Chris Rock. Then my political home entertainment cartoon would be complete!

'UFCW Strike Update

UFCW members voted to strike against JBS on Friday and Saturday June 27th and 28th. After the successful strike vote, JBS contacted UFCW to request negotiations to resume on July 17th. We greatly appreciate the food that was donated to assist these striking workers, and we will keep the food in case of a future strike or to assist members in need currently. We would like to continue to have board members, delegates, and guests bring nonperishable food items to meetings, so we can build up stores to support workers in strife. Don't let them take any more

I was on my way to work at the T-Mobile call center in Brownsville, Texas, when I got some bad news. My co-workers and I soon would be out of jobs because T-Mobile had decided to ship our jobs offshore. The company's decision had devastating effects on my family. Since then, I have been speaking out against T-Mobile's anti-worker practices.

House and car payments, tuition for my oldest son's college education and the expenses of caring for five children were the first things that came to my mind. No American worker should have to worry that their job will be

taken from them unceremoniously and given to someone else. Even though I lost my job, I will not give up the fight for justice for T-Mobile workers-and you can stand up for workers with me.

Stand with Perla and sign the petition to demand that T-Mobile stop hurting working families by shipping America's jobs overseas.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
