Quebec on the path to separation (from a U.S. music union)
|
Musicians voted to split from American Federation of Musicians in a referendum this week, but bargaining over how to serve the needs of French-speaking artists may be just beginning. |
Daniel Lavoie performs in 2008. Quebec musicians voted to separate from the American Federation of Musicians over issues concerning language. Musicians in Quebec have been affliated with the North American union since 1897, almost as long as Canada has been a country. Photo: JACQUES BOISSINOT

By: Allan Woods Toronto Star, Quebec Bureau, Published on Sun Jun 15 2014 MONTREAL-Canadians are all too familiar with the Quebec referendum battles of 1980 and 1995, but there was another separation vote this week that capped a nasty, emotional and high-stakes campaign but flew well under the radar. Unlike 1980 and 1995, Quebecers won this one. By the slimmest of margins - 53.3 per cent - musicians in the province opted to cut ties with the American Federation of Musicians over issues familiar to anyone who has followed the sovereignty wars of the last three decades. The Quebec musicians' guild says it pays more to union headquarters in New York and Toronto than it receives in services, that there is no recognition of the French-speaking majority in the AFM's third-largest union local, nor any real attempts to adapt to the unique realities facing the province's artists. It was so bad that Quebec's language watchdog cautioned the majority-francophone guild with a warning for distributing English-language contracts to French-speaking members. The central union apparently hadn't bothered with translation and the local leadership lacked the money for legal fees. "We told the AFM at that point - it was nearly two years ago - and there was nothing published. They still haven't done the translation and they're perfectly aware of the problem," said jazz guitarist Luc Fortin, president of the Guilde des musiciens et musiciennes du Québec. Read On

Video history of Salt Lake's AFM Local 104
|
Thu Jun 26, 2014 9:13 pm (PDT) . Posted by: "George Brown" timpanist1
 | The American Federation of Musicians Local 104 | The State Labor Board here has been so impressed with the PR work done by the Utah Symphony Musicians and Local 104 -- under the guidance of Randall Whatley of Cypress Media Group -- that they have decided to feature the Local at the upcoming annual Utah AFL-CIO Conference this week. We were asked to come up with both a five minute video as well as a short live presentation to the delegates of all of Utah's various Union Local's. Between members of Local 104's Executive Board and selected Orchestra Musicians involved in the PR work, we managed to produce this video completely in-house at no cost outlay to any of us, and we're pretty darned proud of the end result. Furthermore, we feel this is a stellar example of what can be accomplished when both the Local and the Orchestra Musicians work together on what is, essentially some pretty innovative concepts on union organizing using online media (and we truly hope other Locals 'take note' of that, as it were).

'Growing Old is no Fun! - by Rod Taylor
|
 | Rod Taylor, DMA Member |
Someday, I want to find the person who coined the phrase, "The Golden Years" just to ask where they think all that "Gold" is! That has to be a prank or someone's idea of a bad joke! Nowhere these days, do I see too much gold and whoever has it, is hanging on to it for dear life! Today I met my old drummer and bass player at a local restaurant for a little lunch and a giant rehash of what things used to be like during the "good old days!" Sadly enough, it seems that we spent more time talking about cholesterol and blood pressure pills than we did the "Good Old Days" but we gave it our best shot! Read On

NJ Unions Fight To Defend Pensions In Wake Of Judge's Ruling
|
June 26, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham [Brian Volz]: ""It's very important that all the unions get-together and we deliver a strong message to the legislature to let them know how important it is to pass a balanced, responsible budget." The New Jersey Education Association's Brian Volz. New Jersey unions vow to continue their legal battle to get pensions properly funded as Democrats in the state legislature try to add revenue for pensions to the state budget. On Wednesday New Jersey Superior Court Judge Mary C. Jacobson ruled that Gov. Chris Christie can legally cut payments to the state pensions by about $900 billion this year. But the judge let the unions' legal challenge to Christie's planned pension payment cuts next year stand. After the ruling Communications Workers of America New Jersey Director Hetty Rosenstein told reporters the unions will keep fighting the legal battle for worker pensions. [Hetty Rosenstein]: "Hundreds of thousands of people in New Jersey - and not only active employees, people who are already retired like my 90 year old mother - depend on this pension." Democrats in the New Jersey legislature are moving to raise additional revenue to pay for the pension payments, including a 15% one year surcharge on the business tax. Rosenstein says Christie's own budget policies, including corporate tax cuts, contributed to budget pressures that he says led to the cut in this year's pension payments. [Hetty Rosenstein 2]: ""He hasn't increased taxes on the wealthy. In fact he cuts taxes for the wealthy. But he's increased taxes already on poor and working class people by eliminating the earned income tax credit, buy eliminating the urban enterprise zones for taxes, by cutting homestead rebates and by increasing tolls and fees on working class people.

NLRB Decisions In Doubt As Supreme Court Rules Obama Appointments Unconstitutional
|
June 26, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled President Obama's recess appointments unconstitutional. Obama made the appointments, including positions on the National Labor Relations Board after Senate Republicans blocked them. Obama argued that the appointments were made during Senate recesses. Republicans used parliamentary tactics to gavel the Senate into 'session' even though senators weren't actually there conducting floor business. The Senate eventually approved there nominees after Democrats changed the rules to effectively end filibusters on presidential appointments.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
