South Florida Musicians Association Urges Boycott of Miami Symphony Over Unpaid Wages

South Florida Musicians Association is encouraging members of the community to boycott the Miami Symphony. The Symphony is delinquent in paying wages to its musicians, with some musicians owed for wages as far back as two seasons ago and some musicians owed as much as an entire seasons' wages. In response to claims made by several musicians under Miami-Dade County's Wage Theft Ordinance, the Symphony's attorney admitted that the Symphony owes money to musicians, but claims that the Symphony is not subject to the County's Wage Theft ordinance. According to the Symphony's 2012 tax return, the most recent the Symphony has filed, the Symphony has total liabilities of nearly $1.3 million.

Placido Domingo to sing ahead of World Cup final in Rio

Plácido Domingo, a longtime soccer fan, will perform a concert in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the World Cup finals. The Spanish tenor is scheduled to perform on July 11 in a concert that will also include pianist Lang Lang and soprano Ana Maria Martinez.
The performance, which will be held at the HSBC Arena in Rio, will also feature the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, conducted by Eugene Kohn. Domingo has sung at several World Cups, soccer's biggest event that takes place once every four years.

Andrew Bradford is the new executive director of the Colorado Music Festival & Center for Musical Arts, the Lafayette-based group announced Monday.
Bradford, whose appointment officially begins Aug. 11, replaces David Pratt, who had accepted the job in early December but then reneged on his agreement in January to stay with the Savannah Philharmonic in Georgia. The CMF has been searching for an executive director since Catherine Underhill ended her 11-year tenure in August 2013 to return to her hometown, Syracuse, N.Y., to become managing director of the town's Symphoria.
Bradford's immediate concerns with the CMF are finding a new music director to replace Michael Christie and overseeing the organization's upcoming season and special events.

|  We are an established professional wedding/corporate dance band. 6 piece band with a female lead singer. We are going into our 13th year. We do about 40-50 events per/year. Denver Public Library Concert Series Seeks Musicians
|
 Fresh City Life Concert Series at Denver Central Library is seeking exceptional musicians for one hour performances. Fresh City Life is offering free one hour concerts to the public every Saturday at 2 pm. We are seeking exceptional solos and duos to perform all types of acoustic music. Musicians are paid $100 per person.
Performers need to bring their own amplification (usually a small amp will do.) Audiences usually range from 50 to 100. Most performances are held in the great hall where patrons can enjoy the music from all over the library.

tour dancers-but now Dancers' Alliance informs us Michael Jackson's new music video with Timberlake, "Love Never Felt so Good," features dancers covered by a union contract.
The video was produced under a union contract covering all dancers thanks to a recent successful organizing drive in the music video industry by SAG-AFTRA dancers.
Members of the Dancers' Alliance know that all performers benefit when dancers work together and collectively bargain for fair pay and benefits in the music industry.

Seattle Passes $15 An Hour Minimum Wage Ordinance

The Seattle City Council Monday unanimously passed a $15 an hour minimum wage proposal. Mayor Ed Murray expects to sign it Tuesday. The vote makes Seattle's minimum wage the highest in the nation once it's phased in. The $15 an hour Seattle minimum wage phases in over many years. The 15 Now and 15 For Seattle Coalitions were concerned about how long the wages take to apply and other issues, but they say this is an historic occasion even though the wage ordinance isn't perfect.

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
