Miles Davis - CBS News

Watch a rare and candid interview with the late Miles Davis about his experience with drugs, race relations, and a life in music
May 30, 2014 BY Evie Salomon CBS News
The City of New York unveiled "Miles Davis Way" this week, an Upper West Side street named in honor of one its most influential residents: late jazz great Miles Davis. Miles Davis Way is located on West 77th Street between Riverside and West End Avenue-- the block where Davis lived for nearly 25 years before moving from the area in the mid-1980s. He died in 1991. Davis' old residence happens to be blocks away from the 60 Minutes offices, so when news of his street dedication broke this week, we decided to check our archives to see if Davis and 60 Minutes had ever crossed paths. Sure enough, what we found is a fascinating and raw conversation between Davis and late correspondent Harry Reasoner. Read On / Watch Video

Let's Talk About Taxpayers Subsidizing Walmart
|
Kenneth Quinnell, AFL-CIO Now, 6/1/2014
As part of the ongoing Upworthy series, Workonomics, there will be an UpChat this Thursday to discuss how Walmart's low wages mean that taxpayers end up subsidizing those workers to the tune of $6,000 per employee each year. Wages and benefits are so low for the country's largest employer that many of the company's workers are forced to take part in Medicaid, housing assistance, child care subsidies, food stamps and other government lifelines. Meanwhile, the Walton family, who owns the company, has more wealth than the bottom 40% of the country combined.
All you need to participate this Thursday, June 5, at 2 p.m. EDT is a Twitter account. Learn more details on how to participate in the UpChat and find the conversation on Twitter by looking up the hashtags #UpChatand #WalmartEconomy.

Seattle Passes $15 An Hour Minimum Wage Ordinance
|
June 2, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham
The Seattle City Council Monday unanimously passed a $15 an hour minimum wage proposal. Mayor Ed Murray expects to sign it Tuesday. The vote makes Seattle's minimum wage the highest in the nation once it's phased in. The $15 an hour Seattle minimum wage phases in over many years. The 15 Now and 15 For Seattle Coalitions were concerned about how long the wages take to apply and other issues, but they say this is an historic occasion even though the wage ordinance isn't perfect.

Purchased new from Sound Town in Denver for $770. I am asking $280 + $20 for bench.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
