Colorado Symphony Orchestra rolls out first cannabis-linked concert
By John Wenzel
The Denver Post
5/23/2014
Andrew Livington sported a marijuana leaf lapel pin as he mingled before the Colorado Symphony Classically Cannabis private fundraising event at the Space Gallery Friday night, May 23, 2014

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra's first "Classically Cannabis" event began Friday night like any other fine-arts fundraiser -  with suit- and dress-wearing attendees politely mingling in a high-ceilinged art gallery, sipping drinks and shaking hands.

No clouds of pot smoke, no tie-dyed T-shirts. Not at first, anyway.

A closer look revealed the distinctly cannabis-related nature of the event. The first of three fundraisers in which invite-only attendees were encouraged to bring their own marijuana, Friday's "Classically Cannabis" event also featured a patio on which attendees casually smoked pot from joints, vaporizer pens and glass pipes under umbrellas as a light rain fell.

The do's and dont's of putting on a pot-related arts event

Okay, so you've worked past the pain of not being included on the VIP list for tomorrow's Colorado Symphony "Classically Cannabis" series launch  at the Space Gallery in Denver's Santa Fe Arts District.

Shortly after its announcement, the series stirred confusion over what is and is not considered a public event where you can or can't have pot.

Even the seemingly obvious phrase "public event" was up for scrutiny  -- as the orchestra quickly discovered.

Health & Therapy

A musician's health is often determined by the precautions taken and attention given to one's body. Some musicians can go a lifetime without any music-related ailments. For most of us, however, we are not so lucky. Therefore, it is necessary that we understand the various threats to a musician's health and take the necessary steps to minimize health risks.

Here are few articles on health topics of concern to musicians. If you know of any other pertinent articles, please e-mail them to info@afm.org.

Also, here are some resources on music therapy:

Music therapy through drumming is the focus of Barry Bernstein. You can visit this site at Healthy Sounds.

Music therapy graduate programs are available at New York University.

To my Friends and Aficionados,

Join me at The Tapas D'Jerez Restaurant where I will be doing  two solo guitar shows. Augusto and Francisco, the owners of Tapas D'Jerez will bring the taste of Spain to our evening together.

I am dedicating all of my shows this season to  Paco de Lucia my long time friend and brother who passed February 25th. My solus time has given me the opportunity to create new compositions in his memory. If you want to hear what my music sounds like in its most raw, emotional state, this would be a good night

LABOR & POLITICS

Hey Hey VA!!!
By DMA Member Rod Taylor
Rod Taylor
So....here we go. Another spoke in the big wheel of playing therapeutic healing music forpatients. This time it's the VA facility here in Denver and another step in trying to bring a little  joy and ease the pain for those who have done so much for us for so little thanks.

Honestly, it feels like a very strange tradeoff, walking into a patients' room with my guitar and offering to play my little tunes to someone who put his life on the line in a strange country in order to make folks like me feel safer here at home. On top of that, with all the negative news that has swirled around the VA this last couple of weeks, I begin to wonder if my timing isn't totally upside down and after all, shouldn't listening to someone play "healing" music be a little further down the priority list in the minds of these patients right

During Finals Week
WIN
May 19, 2014 by laborradio  By Doug Cunningham

Thirteen thousand UC student-workers are planning a strike during finals week to protest the university's intimidation of teaching assistant union members. Josh Brahinsky is a student-worker activist with UAW Local 2865.

[Josh Brahinsky]: "This is a strike - like all strikes - that we're hoping to avoid. We would like to solve these issues. And we would really like to sit down with the UC's and come to a peaceful resolution."

The statewide strike at the University of California is set to start June 7th. Brahinsky says ever since the student-worker union began taking on quality of education social issues like class sizes and  issues like equal access to education for undocumented students the intimidation against union members has increased.

[Josh Brahinsky 2]: "In the last month they've kind of gone - I guess gone hostile. Leading up to a previous action there was an administrator at UCSC who told a bunch of our students who were also workers working for him - he said to them if you strike you're never going to work in this department again. Then when we had a strike, which was against intimidation, there were a bunch of workers on the picket line who were arrested. The UC's brought in thirty riot police - police in riot gear from UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. And they came and arrested a whole bunch of people who were peacefully picketing. And since then the folks who were arrested have also faced charges - student disciplinary charges."

Boeing Ordered To 'Cease And Desist' Illegal Video Surveillance Of Union Member
WIN
May 18, 2014 by laborradio
By Doug Cunningham

The National Labor Relations Board is ordering Boeing to stop illegal intimidation tactics against union members. Boeing systematically photographed and video taped unionized engineers near Seattle and Portland, Oregon. The actions are unfair labor practices. The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) filed the unfair labor practices complaint against Boeing. Boeing has also been ordered to post within two weeks a notice saying employees are entitled to join a union and participate in union activities and that Boeing won't video tape, photograph or watch union activities. Boeing is evaluating whether to appeal.

Purchased new from Sound Town in Denver for $770.  I am asking $280 + $20 for bench.

Reason for low price: The A key below middle C is slightly muted relative to the other keys when played gently. With stronger pressure, it sounds normal. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
