Colorado Symphony could move to Central Presbyterian Church
| By Ray Mark Rinaldi The Denver Post 5/12/2014 7

(Cyrus McCrimmon, Denver Post file)
|
The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, under orders to vacate Boettcher Concert Hall next year, is contemplating a move to Central Presbyterian Church at 1660 Sherman St. The CSO and church officials stress that the conversations are preliminary and that no leases have been signed, but the church could provide a nearby landing place for the orchestra, which must move so the city of Denver can start a $16 million renovation of the CSO's longtime home. The church has a contemporary mission that reaches into the community in various ways. It hosts a transitional shelter for the homeless and lately has served as a location where people can sign up for new health care plans being offered by the state. Taking on the CSO as a tenant would be an extension of its current role. "We're involved with the life and health of the community in many ways, and we feel this would be an increase in scale of that kind of ministry," said Pastor Louise Westfall. Read On |

The Paradox of Art as Work
| By A.O. SCOTT MAY 9, 2014 New York Times

Money collected for the Minnesota Orchestra musicians, who were locked out.
Jenn Ackerman for The New York Times

There are few modern relationships as fraught as the one between art and money. Are they mortal enemies, secret lovers or perfect soul mates? Is the bond between them a source of pride or shame, a marriage of convenience or something tawdrier? The way we habitually think and talk about these matters betrays a deep and venerable ambivalence. On one hand, art is imagined to exist in a realm of value that lies beyond and beneath mere economic considerations. The old phrase "starving artist" gestures toward an image that is both romantic and pathetic, of a person too pure, and also just too impractical, to make it in the world. When that person ceases to starve, he or she can always be labeled a sellout. You're not supposed to be in it for the money. Read On |

Opinion: The Symphony's duet with pot should be allowed, encouraged
| Published: May 9, 2014 By Ray Mark Rinaldi, The Denver Post If marijuana is legal, and it is constitutionally in Colorado, then what is its highest and best use? As medicine? Well maybe, and 20-plus states have established that as real enough to make pot available to cancer patients and others suffering from fatal or chronic ailments. As a form of recreation? Cheers to that; people are allowed to have fun. How about as tool for raising public revenues - sales tax moneys that allow governments to build schools, pave roads, pay police officers? All worthy causes. But whatever list you make for pot's benefits, it reasonably ought to include fostering the appreciation of art and allowing the artistic expression it inspires, especially before an audience gathered as a community, peacefully and with good intentions. That is exactly what the Colorado Symphony Orchestra proposed to do with its "Classically Cannabis" concert series. Read On

Colorado Symphony cannabis concerts will go on, by invitation only
| By Ray Mark Rinaldi The Denver Post 5/13/2014 Colorado Symphony Orchestra during rehearsal at Boettcher Concert Hall. (Andy Cross, Denver Post file photo) The Colorado Symphony Orchestra will go on with its "Classically Cannabis" concert series - changing the bring-your-own marijuana events to invitation-only fundraisers so they will not be construed as public events that potentially could break the law. The CSO on Monday stopped selling tickets to the high-profile series in response to a letter from the city of Denver warning that the events could run afoul of regulations forbidding marijuana consumption "openly and publicly in a manner that endangers others." Instead, concerts now will be open only to "a closed list of VIP guests" managed by the concert's promoter, Edible Events, according to a statement from the CSO. The three-concert series, which kicks off May 23 and costs $75 each, will take place at Space Gallery in the Denver's Art District on Santa Fe. Read On |

Richard Strauss' 22-movement tonal symphony captures the musical landscape of a dawn to dusk Alpine ascent. For the final Masterworks concert of the season, the Philharmonic boasts a massive array of instruments and musicians, including 12 horns that feature four Wagnertuben and two tubas, two harpists and two timpanists, an organ, a set of tuned cowbells, an ćoliphone (wind machine), and a giant sheet of metal for replicating thunder. The problem with Thomas Piketty: "Capital" destroys right-wing lies, but there's one solution it forgets
|
After "Capital," we'll never talk income inequality or meritocratic myths the same way. But we must talk unions
Salon.com May 11, 2014
 |
Thomas Piketty, Paul Krugman (Credit: Reuters/Charles Platiau/Anton Golubev)
| What makes Thomas Piketty's "Capital in the Twenty-First Century" such a triumph is that it seems to have been written specifically to demolish the great economic shibboleths of our time. The stock market is not an instrument of economic democracy, it seems; nor does every natural-born American get a chance to run (which is to say, to loot) a Fortune 500 company. The gap between the billionaires and the rest of us is not really a matter of talent or education, we learn; nor do the rich really deserve every last penny of their winnings. Yet it seems that those winnings, once won, multiply relentlessly as time passes, in a way that far outstrips wages even in the best years. The effect of knowing all these things is a healthy one, like when a fever breaks and all those fanciful explanations for things that we had imagined turn out to have been just a dream. The simplest explanations are in fact the true ones, and we owe Piketty thanks for reminding us of this. However, he also has a serious historical blind spot, and it leads even him to wander into the land of make-believe at times, particularly when he is proposing solutions. This is unfortunate, because in reality the simple remedy for inequality has been staring at us all along. We merely need to sober up and look it in the face.

AFL-CIO's Gebre Urges ITV Studios to Negotiate a Fair Deal with Reality TV Producers
|
05/12/2014 Jackie Tortora AFL-CIO NOW It's been more than three years since producers and associate producers who write reality TV shows for the British-owned mega-corporation ITV Studios voted to join the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE), but no progress has been made on contract negotiations that would offer health care and other basic benefits to freelance producers. WGAE reported in a press statement that ITV works its producer-writers (including associate producers, field producers and post-producers) 50, 60, 70 hours per week and refuses to provide them health benefits, paid time off and other basic protections. "ITV employees in Britain would not-and do not-tolerate such treatment." Meanwhile, ITV Studios claimed they cannot afford these modest benefits while dropping $360 million in cash to acquire another production company this week.

Subway CEO Backs Minimum Wage Hike Indexed To Inflation As Fast-Food Worker Strike Nears
| May 11, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham As fast-food workers prepare for strikes in 150 cities this Friday, the founder and CEO of Subway says hiking the minimum wouldn't be such a bad thing for his stores and workers. Fred DeLuca also says the minimum wage should be indexed to inflation so workers get automatic cost-of-living adjustments in the minimum wage. Today's federal minimum wage, adjusted for inflation, is worth 20 percent less than it was in the late sixties. Despite the Subway CEO's support for a higher minimum wage tied to inflation, Subway leads the fast food industry in wage theft violations. DeLuca says he's working to correct that and blamed it on some Subway franchise owners not doing the right thing.

FOR SALE OR RENT / MISC. |
Suzuki C-11 digital piano
Purchased new from Sound Town in Denver for $770. I am asking $280 + $20 for bench.
Reason for low price: The A key below middle C is slightly muted relative to the other keys when played gently. With stronger pressure, it sounds normal. This has not stopped me at all from enjoying this piano. I often do not notice it. (I suppose this could be repaired by someone who knows what they are doing.) It is otherwise a great instrument in great shape. Has metronome, various sounds, and very good built in amp/speaker. Cell/text 303-829-9200

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
