Our New Website
By Jeff Anttila
DMA Webmaster & Business Analyst

It's saddening to see some of the struggles that businesses go through in trying to adapt to a more modern world, but not all of it is the fault of those businesses themselves.   Technology application, including web technologies help companies to become more efficient, and prioritize the services which users and customers desire.

While at a previous company, a Director of the publicly-traded company recommended to all staff reading the book "Good To Great".  The book's author is Boulder-Colorado resident, Jim Collins.  It's an excellent read and I recommend reading the book.  In the book, Jim Collins compares ten companies across several industries and found that companies who adopted technology consistently performed better than their peers.  They compared over 1,000 businesses from Best Buy to Circuit City, Walgreens to RiteAid.  The companies that adopted technology was not only more consistently better than competition, they also consistently beat the S&P 500.  These companies were more efficient, but at the same time, the companies were able to provide better service to their customers.

In the days before Twitter, blogs and social media, the Denver Musicians Association held meetings for its members at the DMA offices, or in a union hall, or shared perspectives by leaflet distribution.  Today's technology allows for everyone, especially the younger generation, to have free expression, freedom of association, including online.  We think we are in our constitutional rights to offer our version of the way we see things, on our new website, blog, and eCommerce functionality.

The new website at DenverMusicians.Org is the beginning of The New DMA.  However, we need your help.  The Online Directory, is re-designed to use Google-Friendly Key Words, that the old directory couldn't.  We need your help to update your directory entries, especially if you're a musician and teacher.

As for the online commenting system, the DMA's commitment to the First Amendment is decades old and long established - it is a matter of public record from long before the word 'Internet' was part of anyone's vocabulary.   We welcome new ideas so they can be debated both in-person and also online.   Our new website has a series of tools which will help to build and grow our online community.   You're able to collaborate online, with musicians in the area, and in the near future, we're looking to add the ability to file AFM-enforcable contracts online, and possibly assist with setting up payroll.   This has never been done before, and Denver will likely be the first AFM local to provide these services online.

Please keep an eye on the new website, DenverMusicians.Org, and please, if you haven't already, please login.  If you've paid dues and need access, just let me know.  I'll verify your payment and ensure you can get to the new members area.

Finally, because this is YOUR website, if there is anything we can add to help you get additional gigs, or promote your band or teaching business, please let us know.   We're open to your ideas.

Colorado Ballet Breaks Attendance and Revenue Records
Colorado Ballet's Dracula Colorado Ballet had its most successful performance season in the 53-year history of the organization, breaking attendance and revenue records during the 2013-2014 season.

Colorado Ballet's productions of "The Nutcracker," "Cinderella" and "Ballet Director's Choice" all exceeded revenue goals. A performance at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House is considered sold out at 2,000 patrons, and this season Colorado Ballet averaged 1,976 patrons per performance at "The Nutcracker." Overall, the holiday production sold out 19 of the 25 performances. "Cinderella" had the highest average attendance per performance of any production excluding "The Nutcracker" for at least the last 20 years. "Ballet Director's Choice" had the highest total attendance and highest average attendance per performance than any show the ballet has ever performed at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. Overall, the organization exceeded its season budget and attendance goals for performances this season.

Colorado Symphony, cannabis industry, find harmony with concert series
By Ray Mark Rinaldi
Denver Post
4/29/2014

The cultural revolution that is making marijuana part of everyday Denver life conquered another established front Tuesday as theColorado Symphony Orchestra announced a series of performances sponsored by the cannabis industry.

The concerts, organized by pro-pot promoter Edible Events, will start May 23 with three bring-your-own marijuana events at theSpace Gallery in Denver's Santa Fe arts district and culminate with a large, outdoor performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Sept. 13. The events are being billed as fundraisers for the CSO, which will curate a themed program of classical music for each show.

While acknowledging that the arrangement is unusual, even ground-breaking, CSO executive director Jerry Kern said the concerts will help the orchestra reach beyond its conservative, fine arts demographic while raising money for an organization that has struggled financially in recent years.

I'm participating in a really interesting concert at Dazzle next Monday May 5 at 7:00. A group of high school stars from the Denver School of the Arts will perform Paquito D'Rivera's Aries Tropical to start things off.

Next up will be the world premier of my quintet Beguiling My Sad Fancy Into Smiling for Soprano, 2 Violins, Bass Clarinet, Cello, and Percussion. I'll be joined by Nadya and Natalie Hill, and Evan and Michelle Orman. The title is a quote from Poe's The Raven and the three large sections of the piece are also based on Poe's words: Dreaming Dreams No Mortal Ever Dared to Dream Before, Many a Quaint and Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore, and On the Night's Plutonian Shore. I'll leave the rest to your imagination other than to say it explores the wild swings of human emotion characterized by Poe in many of his works.

My colleagues and friends from the CU Music Faculty Daphne Leong, John Gunther, Patrick Sutton, and Michael Tetreault will perform works by composers Robert Morris, Louis Andriessen, Vineet Shende and Steve Reich, and we will all join forces for Terry Riley's In C to finish the evening. It will be one of the most innovative chamber concerts in the Denver area this year.

We unfortunately had many friends unable to get last minute tickets at our last Dazzle appearance, so if you are interested reserve your seat right away.
Hope to see you there!

Best wishes,

Second Tuesdays at Trinity, 5/13
Second Tuesdays at Trinity is pleased to present Music for Salon and Cabaret
featuring Marcia Marchesi, piano, and Timothy Kennedy, baritone

Tuesday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 7755 Vance Drive, Arvada CO 80003

This recital celebrates music that was written for smaller venues throughout the generations. Many of the composers featured also wrote for larger venues such as opera, symphony, and choral concerts, but the music showcased on this recital will focus on their more intimate works.

Salons were normally intimate gatherings of friends for both social experiences as well as to experience and discuss art in someone's home. As salons began to lose their popularity, this type of gathering moved to local hangouts including bars and became known as cabarets.

The music chosen for this recital celebrates both venues and their intimacy and social aspects. Composers will include W. A. Mozart, Maria Szymanowska, Reynaldo Hahn, Trinity Presbyterian Church
Peter Tchaikowsky, Gerald Finzi, Claude Debussy, and William Bolcom. During the recital, Mr. Kennedy and Dr. Marchesi will also give some background of the pieces and their importance to this genre.

$15 for adults and $10 students through high school

Alpine Symphony
May 17 at 8:00 PM
May 18 at 2:30 PM

Richard Strauss' 22-movement tonal symphony captures the musical landscape of a dawn to dusk Alpine ascent. From the spine-chilling opening evoking the breaking of a rich sunrise, the drama of the mountain tempest, and through the euphoria of reaching the summit, Eine Alpensinfonie is one of Strauss' most colorful works.

Join the Philharmonic on this auditory expedition, and bear witness to the impressive force of musicians and instruments needed to create an outing in the Alps.

For the final Masterworks concert of the season, the Philharmonic boasts a massive array of instruments and musicians, including 12 horns that feature four Wagnertuben and two tubas, two harpists and two timpanists, an organ, a set of tuned cowbells, an ćoliphone (wind machine), and a giant sheet of metal for replicating thunder.

Augustana Arts, Inc. is a Colorado 501c3 non-profit organization serving metro Denver through a mission to gather the community, support the arts and delight the spirit.  Augustana Arts produces an extensive concert series, is home to an exceptionally innovative chamber orchestra and reaches metro area children in need through the impactful, music instruction program, City Strings. City Strings is currently offered in eight sites for children between the ages of 9 - 14 and employs 6 teachers and operates under agreements with Denver Public Schools and others.  General information is available on our website at www.augustanaarts.org.

City Strings main goal is to bring equity to students in low-income areas by providing the benefits of a music instruction education where there is great need at schools that do not offer music instruction and where families would be unable to provide lessons for their children.  An objective is to use the teaching of a string instrument as a way to nurture students holistically for life-skills including and beyond the benefit of musical skills development and music appreciation. The strategic vision includes the highest level of student safety such that all program teachers/director in contact with students will be fingerprinted and pass background checks and  growth of the program to serve more metro youth will occur in careful increments.

City Strings provides life changing experiences teaching at-risk children how to play instruments (Violin, Viola, or Cello) while positioning them for academic success in math and communications. By participating in City Strings lessons and performances, students are significantly enriched as they acquire self-confidence, learn the value of discipline and how to set goals, as well as develop an appreciation for music.

Media Matters Workers Feel 'Betrayed' By Management Opposition To Their Union Organizing
Labor Radio Posted: April 30, 2014 by laborradio

By Doug Cunningham

An attempt to organize a union through majority recognition at Media Matters has met unexpected management resistance. Media Matters is a progressive media watchdog group that monitors mass media and tries to hold media accountable to the truth. It has long supported unions and the rights of workers to organize their workplaces. Staff workers who formed the Media Matters Organizing Committee released a statement that says Media Matters employees often write in defense of organized labor and they feel betrayed by their management. SEIU Local 500 filed for an NLRB election after getting no response from Media Matters to a request for majority recognition. In their statement the Media Matters workers said "The actions of Media Matters executives have placed employees in the impossible position of continuing to produce content espousing pro-labor values for an employer who is challenging our right to unionize." A request by Workers Independent News to interview Media Matters founder and CEO David was not answered Wednesday. The workers say they feel; betrayed by their management and hope Media Matters executives will change course in favor of the path the organization has long advocated.

A Change is Gonna Come, by Rod Taylor
Rod Taylor
By DMA member Rod Taylor

"A change is gonna come," is a song released into the music marketplace fifty years ago in 1964 by singer-songwriter, Mr. Sam Cooke. If Mr. Cooke could still be with us, I believe some folks today might say the change he's talking about is 'way overdue and needs to get a move on! Since we're talking about changes, this might be the time and place for me to write about a few changes of my own.

As you may recall, I recently graduated a course provided by an organization entitled MHTP in order to become a Certified Music Practitioner. My graduation was a welcome thing simply because I have an intense problem with books and boredom and although I may not have Attention Deficit Disorder, I'm close enough to it to have shaken hands with it a few times!

Graduation created some problems for me. Not that I wasn't ready to go out and apply for work, it's just that all the time I had been studying to become a CMP, I had also been quite diligent in building up a very nice, stable clientele in the local retirement communities where I work as a seniors entertainer! Not only that, but I have become friends with a good number of these folks and giving up on them now, in order to begin something new is just not cool! It would be a stab in the back to those folks who have become friends and are there every time I show up. I just can't do that!

The problem seemed to manifest itself in two important ways. Time and money. The time problem was obvious. Everyone I spoke with who could possibly use me even on a part time basis, also wanted to put me on call in case they needed me to fill a slot for someone. The problem with that idea was that it would cut into my retirement community schedule and I have already stated how I felt about that.

Capitalism vs. Democracy
Thomas B Edsall
New York Times
JAN. 28, 2014

Thomas Piketty's
new book, "Capital in the Twenty-First Century," described by one French newspaper as a "a political and theoretical bulldozer," defies left and right orthodoxy by arguing that worsening inequality is an inevitable outcome of free market capitalism.

Piketty
, a professor at the Paris School of Economics, does not stop there. He contends that capitalism's inherent dynamic propels powerful forces that threaten democratic societies.

Capitalism, according to Piketty, confronts both modern and modernizing countries with a dilemma: entrepreneurs become increasingly dominant over those who own only their own labor. In Piketty's view, while emerging economies can defeat this logic in the near term, in
the long run, "when pay setters set their own pay, there's no limit," unless "confiscatory tax rates" are imposed.

Suzuki C-11 digital piano
Purchased new from Sound Town in Denver for $770.  I am asking $280 + $20 for bench.

Reason for low price: The A key below middle C is slightly muted relative to the other keys when played gently. With stronger pressure, it sounds normal. This has not stopped me at all from enjoying this piano. I often do not notice it. (I suppose this could be repaired by someone who knows what they are doing.) It is otherwise a great instrument in great shape. Has metronome, various sounds, and very good built in amp/speaker.    Cell/text 303-829-9200

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
