Donald D. Stugart "Stugi"
November 13, 1938 - April 16, 2014
 Don was born on November 13, 1938 in Wheatland WY to Don and Charlene Stugart. He passed away at home in the loving arms of his wife, Polly, on April 16, 2014. His step-daughter Eve was also by his side. He is survived by his wife, step-daughter, siblings-in-law Glory and Ron Agenter, Susan Neiman, Butch Kaping and Carol and Charlie Jahn, nephews Travis Agenter, Tyler Agenter and Cole Kaping, nieces Allyson Neiman, Jille Neiman, Kristen Auger and Kathy Todd and many, many treasured friends. Services will be at 2:00pm on Tues., April 22, 2014 at Olinger Crown Hill Pavilion of Reflection. Brian Priestman, 87, former Denver Symphony conductor

 Brian Priestman, the maestro who lead Denver's premiere symphony orchestra for nine years, died April 18 at his home in Broze, France. He was 87.
Preistman stood on the podium from 1970 to 1979, a golden decade for the ensemble, then called the Denver Symphony Orchestra, when it drew sold-out crowds and toured across the country.
He was the orchestra's public face as it opened its new, and current, home, Boettcher Concert Hall, located in the Denver Performing Arts Center downtown in 1978. The organization eventually changed its name to the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.

Roll over, Beethoven. A rock 'n' roll battle of the bands could well have left you and Tchaikovsky singing the blues, but it sure did raise a ton of money for the Colorado Symphony.
From "Bach ... to Rock! The Battle of the Bands" brought in $1.2 million, making it the most profitable Colorado Symphony Ball in the event's 21-year history. The figure represents a $270,000 increase over last year.

 Because a Courtney Love video diary is what we need get us through this sudden blast of winter weather in April, the Hole frontwoman has spent the past couple of months uploading short clips to YouTube in which she dissects semi-timely topics. The latest is Bruce Springsteen, whose E Street Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week, on the same night that Love helped to introduce Nirvana's inclusion.
Love doesn't hate Springsteen ("I really like him; he's a nice guy"), but she doesn't have the kindest things to say about his contributions to rock music. She recounts a brief story in which her "dear friend" Cameron Crowe (the former Rolling Stone journalist who went on to write and direct "Jerry Maguire" and "Almost Famous") took her to a Springsteen show at the Staples Center. "I could only last an hour and a half of a three-and-a-half-hour show with The Boss," she said.
Her beef with the Grammy-winning legend? "Saxophones don't belong in rock 'n' roll. They just don't belong."

Englewood Arts Presents pulls out all of the stops for a program featuring eight of the Colorado Symphony's musical leaders performing together in one grand work. The Octet (for winds and strings), composed in March of 1824, was commissioned by Austrian nobleman, philanthropist, and amateur composer/clarinetist, Count Ferdinand Troyer. It came from the same period as two of Schubert's other major and well-known chamber works, the 'Rosamunde' and 'Death and the Maiden' string quartets.
Though it lays no claim to originality, it manages to be purest Schubert while being clearly and unapologetically based on the model of Beethoven's then over-popular Septet. Consisting of six movements, the Octet takes almost an hour to perform. It boasts the largest scale for any chamber work by Schubert.
Note: Ainomäe Ensemble performances this season have become very popular. You are encouraged to arrive early to assure ticket availability and best seat selection.

Voices West (formerly the Littleton Chorale) and Colorado Chamber Orchestra
OVER 150 VOICES CELEBRATE THE GENIUS OF BERNSTEIN!
In a unique joint concert with the Larimer Chorale of Fort Collins - also directed by Michael Todd Krueger - Voices West celebrates the great talent of Leonard Bernstein through the songs of both his classic and Broadway repertoire. With over 150 voices contributing, this performance is sure to make a grand impression on each and every concertgoer.
The Saturday evening performance will take place at St James Presbyterian Church in Littleton, Colorado. Tickets are available in advance on the Voices West website (voiceswest.org), and will also be available in limited quantities at the door. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and children under 12 are free. Voices West has also partnered with the Colorado Public Radio Membership program to offer a 2-for-1 ticket opportunity for card-carrying members.
As this will be a one-night-only performance in the Denver Metro area, advance tickets are highly recommended. Voices West will also be performing the concert on Sunday, April 27th at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins. Tickets for the Sunday concert are available directly though the Lincoln Center.

Dick Weissman is a long-time member of Local 20-623, who served three times on the Executive Board. He recently returned to Denver after ten years in Oregon. During the course of his music business career he has been a major label recording artist, worked as a studio musician, record producer, a composer and songwriter with film and TV placements for NBC, BBC, and the Biography Channel, and has written two feature film scores, and music for several plays. He has written or co-authored 21 published books about music and the music business, and over fifty published instructional folios for various music publishers. As a songwriter he has written numerous recorded songs and instrumentals, and songs commissioned by groups ranging from the oil worker's union to banks in Colorado. He was an Associate Professor in the Music & Entertainment Industry program at UCD, Adjunct Professor at the University of Oregon, and Portland Community College, and has lectured on the music business for the Jamaican Trade Board, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Elmhurst College, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of Miami, and Augsburg College. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the city of Boulder, and the University of Colorado.

2014 marks the 11th year of the Five Points Jazz Festival. Each year, this free festival celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the historic Denver Five Points neighborhood with music, dance, food and festivities.  Each week until the festival on May 17, Denver Arts & Venues will be highlighting some of the talented musicians who will be performing at the festival. Five Points Jazz Festival is pleased bring Calixto Oviedo and the Latin Jazz Way to the festival for the first time. They will be closing Five Points Plaza stage at 5:30pm on May 17. The mission of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra Association (DYAO) is to provide the finest possible youth orchestra programs, inspiring and educating young musicians through the performance of great works of music and offering valuable cultural opportunities to the community. DYAO has five orchestral groups, of which four are training orchestras for the Young Artists Orchestra. We serve over 260 children and young adults between the ages of 8 and 23 representing approximately 100 schools from across the Colorado Front Range region. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible to drive and maintain the mission, goals, and strategies of the organization.

Denver Public Library Concert Series Seeks Musicians
|
 Fresh City Life Concert Series at Denver Central Library is seeking exceptional musicians for one hour performances. Fresh City Life is offering free one hour concerts to the public every Saturday at 2 pm. We are seeking exceptional solos and duos to perform all types of acoustic music. Musicians are paid $100 per person.
Performers need to bring their own amplification (usually a small amp will do.) Audiences usually range from 50 to 100. Most performances are held in the great hall where patrons can enjoy the music from all over the library.

The Diamond Empire Band performs weddings and parties in Denver and the surrounding region. According to their promo, the band tours regularly with top artists such as Michael Buble, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. They say they're "voted one of the country's best party bands", but a recent expose' on denvermusicians.org shows that little if any of this is true.

 The CU Denver Summer Music Industry Program is designed to offer high school students, ages 14-18, a window into what it takes to be a musician today. Students will contribute to a creative and productive team that supports individual growth and achieves the final group projects. By the end of the session, students will have created a demo recording, live show, electronic press kit, and business plan. The program dates are June 15-27, 2014. Tell Lionsgate It Has the Score Wrong. Stop Sending Musicians' Jobs Overseas

One of the most iconic American symbols is the National Football League. This week Lionsgate Entertainment is releasing a movie about what is probably the second most popular day for football fans after the Super Bowl-"Draft Day." But Lionsgate did something decidedly un-American for this film. It shipped American musicians' jobs overseas-to Macedonia. It's not the first time Lionsgate has ignored movie industry standards by shutting out American musicians and recording scores overseas. "The Hunger Games" and "Twilight" are two more recent examples. In fact, over the last two years, only two of the dozens of films the company's produced were scored to industry standards domestically. Professional musicians are standing up with their union, the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM), by launching a campaign to tell Lionsgate to "Listen Up!" and uphold industry standards, and guarantee proper wages and working conditions on all of its productions.

SEIU Wins $57 Million Back Pay Settlement For 22,000 Home Health Care Workers

Thanks to being in a union 22,000 home health care workers in Washington state will be getting an average of $3500 each in a back pay settlement. A state supreme court decision awarded $57 million in back pay. SEIU championed the workers' cause when Washington state's Department of Social and Health Services cut their pay. The pay of home health care workers who lived with those they cared for was cut. The case went to the state supreme court, which found for the workers in a 5-4 split decision. The court found that the state violated its good faith duty in honoring the terms of the contracts, cutting the pay of home health care providers. It could take a few more weeks before the 22,000 workers begin getting their back pay checks.

Community Band Seeking New Members

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. This is a great opportunity for young musicians to work with outstanding conductors and mentors, including GBYO Artistic Director Gary Lewis, the Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Working with him is an amazing artistic staff comprised of Emily Bowman, Erik Johnson, and Paul Rowinski. GBYO also hosts a unique and innovative mentorship program, giving students the opportunity to work side by side with professional musicians on a regular basis. We support the school music programs; all students are required to participate in their parallel school ensemble. We are looking for young musicians ages 6-21 to join our three orchestras and Wind Ensemble. Students of all instruments and all skill levels are encouraged to audition! |

A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero."
