AGENDA:
A new collaboration between the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Rockies. This could be a model business partnership at a time when symphony orchestras are struggling nationwide. The musicians support the effort, but the AFM claims the orchestra is violating national media agreements. Is this something that needs changing?

Presentation on features and benefits of DMA's new website (www.denvermusicians.org) and how to use this powerful tool for networking and promotion. Please note that this site is still under construction.

Former Peninsula Symphony director jailed on embezzlement charges

By Tracey Kaplan

San Jose Mercury News

SAN JOSE -- The Peninsula Symphony was sitting pretty this past fall -- or so board members thought.

The executive director of the Los Altos nonprofit had just reported the group was in excellent financial shape, ready to embark on its 65th concert season. But then a venue-rental check bounced, and the horrified board learned all its accounts had been drained -- including a $500,000 endowment.

"It was a total surprise," said board Chairman and cello player Alan Bien, who performs with the orchestra of volunteer musicians.

The discovery prompted the sudden resignation of the group's executive director, Stephen Jay Carlton, in September. After an investigation by Los Altos police, the state Franchise Tax Board and Santa Clara County prosecutor Judy Lee, Carlton was arrested last week on charges of embezzlement, grand theft, forgery, identity theft and tax evasion in connection with the symphony's loss.

The Minnesota Orchestra Association (MOA) board is at it again; the latest news report describes an apparent decision to offer former music director Osmo Vanska a position as principal guest conductor while also retaining President & CEO Michael Henson.

And while you can be certain there are some on the MOA board who see this as a legitimate offer to reach some middle ground, conductor Bill Eddins published an article that set aside the niceties to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Proposal Comes After Board Said Donors Can't Cover Growing Expenses

The Metropolitan Opera is proposing in contract talks to cut compensation for its union-represented workers for the first time in decades, as it attempts to trim its budget and rebuild its hobbled endowment.

The cost-cutting move comes after the board of the opera company, with ticket sales faltering, decided that it had reached the limit of its donors' willingness to cover, year after year, the company's growing expenses, according to a person familiar with the matter. Starting this year, the Met will also limit the number of new productions to six, a slight decline from the seven new productions a year in recent seasons.

On March 22 and 24, chart-topping recording artist Simone Dinnerstein joins the Boulder Phil for not one, but two, concertos: Gershwin's famous Rhapsody in Blue and the Colorado premiere of Philip Lasser's Piano Concerto, a work he wrote to embody the love he shares with Dinnerstein for the music of J.S. Bach.

Debussy's impressionistic La Mer ("The Sea") and Heitzeg's Ghosts of the Grasslands complement Lasser's French-American aesthetic.

Neil Bridge Jazz Trio, 3/30
Neil Bridge Jazz Trio
with Karen Lee on Vocals

What Jazz means is not merely a word definition. It is an emotion felt when personalities express themselves using the art of music. Jazz is free flowing feelings that converse about the day and fine tuned fables that are told by masterful story tellers. The book that is written time and again by Neil Bridge and his Trio of insightful musicians is always an exciting one.

The pieces are well arranged by Neil, but leave room for fresh ideas from the group, whom aren't afraid to bring their opinions into the mix. Adolph Mares lays down a steady bass that fulfills the rhythmic low end melodic harmonies around the groove that Kevin Smith tastefully taps on the drums. Its hard to miss, Miss Karen Lee's, dazzling presence and vocalizations that accompany Neil musically, physically, and spiritually by his side.

When the clave clicks we are pushed to the front of the seat while they stay on the 2 edge of the beat, and then the group calms us down with a round of the swing style thats keeps jazz cool. The great music that flows from the Neil Bridge Jazz Trio, is a sophisticated symphony of sounds, merely an interpretative reflection of life, so come check 'em out and be part of something larger. This ain't New York, and not part of LA, we are Denver and Neil Bridge is here to stay.       Bryan Goldstein

Rod Taylor - Is it Time Yet?
Rod Taylor
Rod Taylor
Is it Time Yet?
By DMA member Rod Taylor

This week, some interesting things are taking place across our countryside. The Republican CPAC popularity contest has been held with the consensus winner being the one that hollered the loudest and the rest of the field is kind of a u-pic-em affair with each new candidate trying to out anti-Obama the previous speaker.

One thing is for sure. There was enough hot air coming off the stage at some points to heat most of the government buildings in the USA and most of Canada but that's about it. Hot air and not much else. It makes you think of the old story about the little old lady who stalled her car in an intersection and couldn't get it started. The man in the car behind her leaned on his horn without stopping until finally she got out of her car, walked back to his and politely said, "Sir, if you'll go up and try to start my car for me, I'll gladly sit back here and honk the horn for you!"

6 Reasons Even Conservatives Should Support Raising the Minimum Wage
By Kenneth Quinnell
3/10/2014

While Democrats in Congress and the president are attempting to raise the national minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, there is still pretty strong opposition to raising the wage (or its very existence) from pro-corporate extremists on the far right. But as more and more evidence is gathered concerning the minimum wage and its effect on workers, it's harder and harder to sustain any belief other than that the wage should be raised. Not only is it the morally correct thing to do, it has positive effects on the economy. Here are six reasons why everyone, including conservatives, should support raising the minimum wage (hat tip to Joshua Holland at BillMoyers.com):

1. Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 by 2016 will benefit millions of workers. Even accepting conservative estimates, this would be an unambiguously good thing for workers-raising wages directly for 16.5 million workers, raising wages indirectly for 8 million more, allowing workers under the poverty line to earn $5 billion more in wages and lifting 900,000 workers out of poverty.

2. Raising the minimum wage will also reduce the budget deficit. Raising the minimum wage to $10.10, according to a study by the Center for American Progress (CAP), would cut spending on food stamps (SNAP) by $4.6 billion a year.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
