Colorado Rockies move beyond 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game'
 Denver Business Journal
Feb 20, 2014

Charles Denler

Charles Denler, the Emmy Award-winning composer who lives in Highlands Ranch, took on an unusual job last month, that of writing a theme song for the Colorado Rockies.

The resulting composition, a sweeping two-minute orchestral piece called "Take the Field," will be played by the Rockies at the top of every game, with shorter snippets expected to show up in commercials for the team and at key moments during games.

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday recorded the Rockies theme, along with a handful of variations. Denler, who has a trunkful of TV and film soundtracks to his credit, said some 80 members of the orchestra recorded "a big 'Star Wars'-y variation and a very serious, pensive, we're-going-to-make-it-through-this variation, and the main theme, which is very upbeat and very aggressive in a good sportsman kind of way."

Phoenix Symphony Chooses New Music Director
By Kerry Lengel
Tito Muñoz, who was chosen as the new conductor for the Phoenix Symphony, conducts the Cleveland Orchestra. Muñoz served as an assistant conductor there for three years. Roger Mastroianni
The Republic  |  azcentral.com
Feb 20, 2014

After a 2 1/2-year search, the Phoenix Symphony has named a new music director to define the artistic identity and serve as the public face of the state's largest performing-arts company.

Tito Muñoz, who currently serves as music director of the Opéra National de Lorraine and Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy in France, will take the baton at Phoenix's Symphony Hall for seven classics concerts in the 2014-15 season. A native of Queens, N.Y., he is 30 years old - the same age of his predecessor, Michael Christie, when Christie came to the Valley in 2004.

"He's young, but he's very mature in his character," said Viviana Cumplido Wilson, principal flute and one of five symphony musicians who served on the search committee.

An Open Letter to Venues That Exploit Their Musicians
January 6, 2012
By Dave Goldberg

As Ive been looking for gigs lately, I've never seen so many free and low paying gigs. Well the economy is bad, so I can understand that a little bit. However, it is no longer good enough for the musician to be willing to perform for little compensation. Now we are expected to also be the venue promoter? The expectations are that the band will not only provide great music, but also bring lots of people to their venue. It is now the band'sresponsibility to make this happen, not the club owner.

Just the other day I was told by someone who owned a wine bar that they really liked our music and would love for us to play at their place. She then told me the gig paid $75 for a trio. Now $75 used to be bad money per person, let alone $75 for the whole band. It had to be a joke, right? No, she was serious. But it didn't end there. She then informed us we had to bring 25 people minimum. Didn't even offer us extra money if we brought 25 people. I would have laughed other than it's not the first time I've gotten this proposal from club owners. But are there musicians really doing this? Yes. They are so desperate to play, they will do anything. But let's think about this for a second and turn this around a little bit.

GREENWOOD There Will Be Blood
BRITTEN Piano Concerto No. 1
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 1

Innovative German conductor André de Ridder leads an eclectic program that starts with a contemporary composer and moves backwards, inviting the audience to listen in new ways. Opener There Will Be Blood, from the 2007 film of the same name, was composed by Jonny Greenwood, best known as the guitarist in Britain's art-rock combo Radiohead. William Wolfram takes on Britten's sole piano concerto, brilliantly juxtaposed by Beethoven's first symphony, which introduced the young composer to the world.

Denver Acoustic Music Society March Meeting, 3/3

DAMS Logo Spring is just around the corner - and so is our next meeting!  The next meeting of the Denver Acoustic Music Society is Monday, March 3rd, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

This month, we took your feedback from the survey, and are starting on a more difficult piece that we'll play for the next few months.

Zapatos, by Ton Huijsman, is a tango arranged for Flute, Violin, Recorder and Guitar.  All four parts are easily playable by guitar.  However - we'd really like more than just guitar.  If you play any of these instruments, or know anyone who plays these, please (please!) get to the meeting, or bring your non-guitar playing friend to the meeting.  We started DAMS for all acoustic instruments - not just guitar.  We'd really love some different instruments.

For our easier ensemble works, we'll continue playing from Forrest Ensemble Series 4.  This month we'll play Vals and Menuetto.   All these are on our Google Drive - https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6kpIINK7W0zOXJ0QndpZUxJQ28&usp=sharing under the March folder.

Please print them out, pick a part (or two just in case), and come prepared to play!

We'll spend the first half of the meeting doing the ensemble pieces, then open it up for the second hour for individual play.

We meet at the University Park Methodist Church  from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

See you next Monday!

Is This What We Really Want?
By DMA Member Rod Taylor

Report Card This week on my way back home from a job in northern Colorado, the radio station I was listening to told me that according to the latest information we had, any eighth grade student in China was posting an equal education equivalency to eleventh graders in the US. Frankly, not really what I wanted to hear. That evening, I got treated to another example of just how far we've fallen academically and socially as I was treated to a full dose of a Texas gubernatorial candidate's idea of what a good "warm up" act should be in order to bring his Texas audiences nearer and dearer to his politics and Texas' way of thinking. The person picked for this job is a used up "has been" rocker named Ted Nugent who spent his talking moments belching invectives and trying to score a few nasty one liners at the expense of the President and Hillary Clinton.

Last week in Arizona, the tea party-dominated legislature passed a bill that will allow businesses to slam their doors shut on anyone they say doing business with would violate their religious beliefs. While the bill was aimed primarily at the LGBTQ community, in effect, it could allow business owners to discriminate against anyone.

Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has until Friday to sign or veto the bill. Call 888-968-2464 and urge Brewer to veto the bill.

When the bill passed, Anna Tovar, the state Senate Democratic minority leader, said:
With the express consent of Republicans in this Legislature, many Arizonans will find themselves members of a separate and unequal class under this law because of their sexual orientation. This bill may also open the door to discriminate based on race, familial status, religion, sex, national origin, age or disability.

Sate Rep. Chad Campbell (D) told CNN Friday:

Let there be no doubt about what this bill does. It's going to allow people to discriminate against the gay community in Arizona. It goes after unprotected classes of people and we all know that the biggest unprotected class of people in the state is the LBGT community. If we were having this conversation in regard to African Americans or women, there would be outrage across the country right now.

NLRB Investigating UAW Appeal Of VW Election, Board Could Order New Election
Posted: February 23, 2014 by laborradio

By Doug Cunningham

The National Labor Relations Board is investigating an appeal filed by the United Auto Workers in the VW plant union election in Tennessee. The UAW appeal is over the interference of politicians and outside special interest groups. The UAW objections filed with the NLRB detail a coordinated and highly publicized campaign by politicians and outside groups that the union says was coercive. The UAW says that anti-union campaign deprived VW workers of their federally protected right to form a union. VW worker Lauren Feinaur says the politicians' campaign essentially said "If you unionize it's going to hurt your economy. Why? Because I'm going to make sure it does." She called it an underhanded threat. UAW President Bob King says it was extraordinary interference in the private decision of the workers. And he vowed to stand with VW workers to ensure their right to have a fair vote without coercion and interference is protected. If the NLRB finds for the UAW the board could set aside the election results and order a new election.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
