Famous Musician Praised As 'Japan's Beethoven' Admits To Using Ghost Composer
|
by ELAINE KURTENBACH 02/06/2014 10:19 am EST
 | Mamoru Samuragochi | TOKYO (AP) - The ghostwriter for the musician lauded as Japan's Beethoven said Thursday he became fed up and ended their 18-year collaboration last year and he questioned if Mamoru Samuragochi really could hear. Samuragochi, 50, had previously claimed to be the sole author of his classical works and sound tracks for video games, such as Biohazard, despite having lost his hearing by age 35. His story resonated in Japan, where perseverance is greatly admired. But he admitted Wednesday that he did not write the powerful "Hiroshima Symphony" and other works credited to him. His ghost composer, Takashi Niigaki, said he provided music for Samuragochi for 18 years and questioned if he was hearing impaired. "I saw no signs that he could not hear," Niigaki said as, seemingly flustered by the limelight, he struggled to answer a barrage of questions over how Samuragochi could have managed the deception for so long. A written statement from Samuragochi's lawyers apologized for what he called a "betrayal" of his fans and described Samuragochi as being in "too unstable an emotional state" to appear in public.

Critically acclaimed pianist Conrad Tao playing with Philharmonic
At the age of 4, Conrad Tao gave his first piano recital. By the time he was 8, the piano prodigy was performing challenging pieces at music festivals accompanied by a full orchestra. Mr. Tao celebrates his 20th birthday this summer, and the young man already has a laundry list of accolades, including the recent release of a full-length solo album. His piano playing has been described as "endlessly engaging," "beyond impressive," and "transcendent and beautiful." To call this young man talented may be an understatement. The Philharmonic takes great pride and pleasure in offering three opportunities to experience this musician in concert.

STRING SEXTETS OF BRAHMS, STRAUSS & SCHULHOFF
Date: Saturday ~ February 15, 2014
Time: 2:00 PM
Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)* | Silver Ainomäe |
Englewood Arts Presents offers up a Valentine weekend performance by the Ainomäe Ensemble in works by Czech-born composer Erwin Schulhoff and German-born composers Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms. Artistic director Silver Ainomäe (cello) and his wife, Anne (viola), will perform along with CSO musicians Myroslava Bartels and Boram Kang, violins; Phillip Stevens, viola; and Thomas Heinrich, cello.
The program:
Schulhoff String Sextet
Strauss Capriccio
Brahms Sextet No.1 in B-flat major
Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was one of several European musicians whose successful and promising careers were prematurely terminated by the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany and whose works have been rarely recognized or performed. He was greatly influenced by the works of Richard Strauss (1864-1949) who was 68 when the Nazi regime rose to power.
Although Richard Strauss never joined the Nazi party, he was initially drawn into cooperating with the early Nazi regime in hopes that Hitler - an ardent music lover who admired Strauss' work - would support German art and culture. Strauss' need to protect his Jewish daughter-in-law and Jewish grandchildren also contributed to his behavior. Capriccio, the overture from Strauss' final opera of the same name, is the only operatic overture of its kind that stands as a piece of pure chamber music for strings and also contributes to the action of the opera.
Both Schulhoff and Strauss were inspired by the works of Brahms (1833-1897), and what sextet program would be complete without his beloved Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major? Please bring your Valentine and experience these lush string instrument combinations performed by some of Denver's finest musicians.

2014 Big Band Boogie Bash, 2/22
|
In an era where the jazz industry's seemingly greatest fear is extinction by the threat of a graying audience, the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) is doing everything they can to grow new audiences and train young jazz musicians in the art form. One of the many ways they achieve this is by hosting the Big Band Boogie Bash where six college bands and three high school groups come together to participate in a one-of-a-kind day-long big band festival. Beginning back in the 1970's and originally featuring a lineup of professional groups, CCJA has re-invented and rejuvenated it with a fresh focus on the youth of the music. The Big Band Boogie Bash takes place on February 22, 2014 at the Mercury Café located at 2199 California Street in Denver. The music starts at 1pm and doesn't stop until 8pm. The 2014 Big Band Boogie Bash features the following lineup: 1:00 University of Northern Colorado Lab 1 2:00 Metropolitan State University Jazz Ensemble 1 3:00 Legend High School Jazz Ensemble 3:45 University of Denver Lamont Jazz Orchestra 4:45 University of Colorado-Boulder Jazz Ensemble 2 5:45 Colorado State University Jazz Ensemble 1 6:45 Denver School of the Arts Jazz Workshop Orchestra 7:30 CCJA Jazz Arts Messengers The Big Band Boogie Bash will feature a silent auction run by CCJA's board of directors, featuring items such as passes to the Telluride, Jazz Aspen, and Vail Jazz Festivals. Tickets to the Bash are $15 general admission, and $10 students / 55+, and allow you to stay for as long as you'd like. Tickets are available at the door as well as online at: www.jazzarts.org. It is sure to be a fun Saturday afternoon of exciting big band music both new and old and we hope to see you there! Check out a fantastic video montage with some of the highlights and all of the different bands from last year's Big Band Boogie Bash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8Nlo12QmoU For more information about the Big Band Boogie Bash or any of CCJA's other events, please visit us at www.jazzarts.org and our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/jazzarts99

The GOP attacks a union drive at VW - though the company's in favor
| By Michael Hiltzik Los Angeles Times February 12, 2014
 |
From "we will overcome" to "the whole world is watching": Sen. Bob Corder (R-Tenn). (Chattanooga Times Free Press / Feb 12, 2014)
|
Some 1,500 employees at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, Tenn., started voting today on whether to affiliate with the United Auto Workers. Here are a couple of interesting points about this vote, which will continue through Friday. --Volkswagen's in favor.
--Tennessee Republicans, including Gov. Bill Haslam and Sen. Bob Corker, have been threatening the company with retribution if the vote succeeds.
Reading the remarks of the state's GOP politicians is like a trip through cloud-cuckoo-land. Here's a statement sent to the Detroit Free Press by State Sen. Bo Watson of Chattanooga: "Volkswagen has promoted a campaign that has been unfair, unbalanced and, quite frankly, un-American in the traditions of American labor campaigns .... Should the workers choose to be represented by the United Auto Workers, then I believe additional incentives for expansion will have a very tough time passing the Tennessee Senate." Apparently the "American" style of labor campaign is one in which the employer moves heaven and earth to intimidate workers and suppress their legal right to collective bargaining, not one in which the employer sees concrete benefits in a union presence on the factory floor. Guess who Walmart just hired
|
Mike Rowe, who hosted the popular TV series Dirty Jobs, understands hard work. He's made a career out of celebrating working people, especially those in thankless jobs working under some of the toughest and grossest conditions. Rowe even has his own foundation to support an investment in skilled labor.
 | Mike Rowe |
Which is why it was so surprising to hear Mike Rowe narrating a new Walmart TV ad that's part of a PR campaign where the company is promising to put more American-made goods in stores over the next 10 years.
And we weren't the only ones that were surprised. His fans went straight to his Facebook page to question his latest job, and Rowe passionately responded with a very misguided defense of Walmart.1
This isn't the first time Walmart has launched a big-budget PR campaign to try to improve its image instead of actually changing its business practices. Mike should know that Walmart only invests in its reputation - not in its workers and definitely not in our country's future.
Not all dirty jobs look the same. There's over one million men and women working at Walmart who get paid such low wages that they can't afford to put food on their tables. Time and again, workers call on the company to address low wages, erratic schedules, paltry benefits and unacceptable working conditions. And how has the retail giant responded? They've played dirty - retaliating against and even firing those who speak out.
Walmart workers understand that all too well - which is why they're asking Mike Rowe to sit down and talk about how Walmart can really change.
In solidarity,
Erica Smiley

College Athletes are Ready to Unionize
|
By Daniel Uthman USA Today, 1/29/14 Members of the Northwestern University football team, under the guidance of former quarterback Kain Colter, have signed a petition seeking to gain protections under the National Labor Relations Act. That would mean they would be recognized as employees in addition to being college athletes. According to Ramogi Huma, president of the newly formed College Athlete Players Association, an overwhelming majority of the team has signed cards supporting a petition filed Tuesday at the Chicago regional office of the National Labor Relations Board to secure their labor rights and union representation through CAPA. Jim Phillips, Northwestern's director of athletics, said in a statement Tuesday afternoon, "We love and are proud of our students. Northwestern teaches them to be leaders and independent thinkers who will make a positive impact on their communities, the nation and the world. Today's action demonstrates that they are doing so."

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
