Dancing With the Stars drops band
Harold Wheeler Orchestra
By Hal Boedeker
Staff writer, Orlando Sentinel
Feb 3, 2014

You've heard the last of the Harold Wheeler Orchestra and Singers on "Dancing With the Stars."

BBS Worldwide Productions and ABC have issued this statement: "Our talented band leader and composer, Harold Wheeler, will not be joining us for season 18 of "Dancing with the Stars. Since season one, Harold and his band have performed brilliant live music in our ballroom for our dancers and the American viewers at home. We are grateful to him and his band for their amazing work and years of collaborations. We wish him the best of luck."

So what happened? The American Federation of Musicians has blasted ABC for firing the band.

New York, NY- After 17 hit seasons performing on one of the world's most popular TV programs, Dancing with the Stars (DWTS), the 28 men and women of the show's live backing band-the Harold Wheeler Orchestra and Singers-have been fired. Producers say the group will be replaced with pre-existing sound recordings and a "small electric band" to "attract a younger demographic."

American Federation of Musicians International President Ray Hair blasted ABC-TV for its decision, asking supporters to e-mail Candice.a.ashton@abc.com to demand the orchestra's return or risk viewer retaliation. "People who love Dancing with the Stars also love the superb performances of the orchestra because it is such an integral part of the show," says Hair. "The tight, elaborate musical productions that catapulted the show into the top 10 in 17 countries can't be duplicated by recordings and a small combo. Viewers, whether they are young or old, will reject that as artistic fraud."

Network sources say that a recent shift in ABC/Disney's executive staff in charge of primetime reality series programming led to pressure on DWTS producer BBC Worldwide Productions to cut corners and pander to a younger viewing audience. "It's not like ABC and Disney don't have any money and can't afford an orchestra. It's about the insatiable thirst for profits at the expense of music, art, and those who create it," says Hair. "Firing the band, using recordings, and hiring fewer musicians won't boost ratings. It will kill the show."

Relief all round as police recover violin thought to be missing Stradivarius

The world's top classical music performers and owners of rare instruments are keeping their fingers crossed that a violin that has been recovered in Milwaukee will turn out to be the stolen Lipinski Stradivarius.

Milwaukee police have announced that they have taken into their possession a violin but had yet to confirm its identity. A reward of $100,000 had been offered for the recovery of the Strad, which has been valued at about $5m.

The violin was grabbed on 27 January from the hands of Frank Almond, the concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, who was walking to his car after a performance of Messiaen. He was shot with a stun gun by an assailant who made off in a minivan with an accomplice.

On Wednesday police said they had made three "high-quality arrests

Rubbish music: why we judge others for their musical tastes
By Dean Burnett

It's common to judge someone based on the music they like, despite musical preference being largely subjective. But why do musical tastes differ so, and why do we feel the need to criticise those with tastes that don't match our own?
While working in music retail, I hitched my sanity to a sense of smug superiority. This was not deliberate, so much as natural, to combat - what I declared to be - idiocy and ignorance, from the faceless mass of wallets and fingers and mouths yearning for the new Katy Perry. They knew nothing of Syd Barrett's obscure albums; probably couldn't even pronounce Tchaikovsky; and couldn't tell the difference between Katie Melua and Norah Jones (I no longer can). We were proud of knowledge, touching invisible monocles and pursing our lips around non-existent pipes when some poor heathen thought Pink Floyd was a single artist rather than a band.

Englewood Arts Presents offers up a Valentine weekend performance by the Ainomäe Ensemble in works by Czech-born composer Erwin Schulhoff and German-born composers Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms.  Artistic director Silver Ainomäe (cello) and his wife, Anne (viola), will perform along with CSO musicians Myroslava Bartels and Boram Kang, violins; Phillip Stevens, viola; and Thomas Heinrich, cello.

The program:
Schulhoff String Sextet
Strauss Capriccio
Brahms Sextet No.1 in B-flat major

Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was one of several European musicians whose successful and promising careers were prematurely terminated by the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany and whose works have been rarely recognized or performed.  He was greatly influenced by the works of Richard Strauss (1864-1949) who was 68 when the Nazi regime rose to power.

Although Richard Strauss never joined the Nazi party, he was initially drawn into cooperating with the early Nazi regime in hopes that Hitler - an ardent music lover who admired Strauss' work - would support German art and culture.  Strauss' need to protect his Jewish daughter-in-law and Jewish grandchildren also contributed to his behavior.  Capriccio, the overture from Strauss' final opera of the same name, is the only operatic overture of its kind that stands as a piece of pure chamber music for strings and also contributes to the action of the opera.

Both Schulhoff and Strauss were inspired by the works of Brahms (1833-1897), and what sextet program would be complete without his beloved Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major?  Please bring your Valentine and experience these lush string instrument combinations performed by some of Denver's finest musicians.

The Middle Class Is Steadily Eroding. Just Ask the Business World
By NELSON D. SCHWARTZ
FEB. 2, 2014
New York Times

In Manhattan, the upscale clothing retailer Barneys will replace the bankrupt discounter Loehmann's, whose Chelsea store closes in a few weeks. Across the country, Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants are struggling, while fine-dining chains like Capital Grille are thriving. And at General Electric, the increase in demand for high-end dishwashers and refrigerators dwarfs sales growth of mass-market models.

As politicians and pundits in Washington continue to spar over whether economic inequality is in fact deepening, in corporate America there really is no debate at all. The post-recession reality is that the customer base for businesses that appeal to the middle class is shrinking as the top tier pulls even further away.

Rising inequality has obvious economic costs: stagnant wages despite rising productivity, rising debt that makes us more vulnerable to financial crisis. It also has big social and human costs. There is, for example, strong evidence that high inequality leads to worse health and higher mortality.

But there's more. Extreme inequality, it turns out, creates a class of people who are alarmingly detached from reality - and simultaneously gives these people great power.

On Feb. 12-14, workers at the Chattanooga, Tenn., Volkswagen factory will vote to unionize. If successful, they plan to organize under the works council model that is common at the company's factories outside the United States. Currently, the Tennessee location is the only major Volkswagen production facility in the world that does not have labor representation. Works councils enable workers to collaborate with management in improving the workplace and increasing company success.

"Volkswagen is known globally for its system of cooperation with unions and works councils," saysUAW President Bob King. "The UAW seeks to partner with [Volkswagen Group of America (VWGOA)] and a works council to set a new standard in the U.S. for innovative labor-management relations that benefits the company, the entire workforce, shareholders and the community. The historic success of the works council model is in line with the UAW's successful partnerships with the domestic automakers and its vision of the 21st century union."

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
