Renée Fleming to sing Anthem at Super Bowl
Renée Fleming
Renée Fleming
By Ronni Reich/The Star-Ledger
January 21, 2014

Renée Fleming, one of the world's most renowned sopranos, will sing the national anthem at Super Bowl XLVIII.

She will be the first opera singer to have the honor. (Last year, Alicia Keys was picked. Others tapped in recent years to sing the anthem at the Super Bowl include Cher, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson and The Dixie Chicks.)

Awarded the National Medal for the Arts by President Obama at the White House in 2012 - the highest honor given to artists by the government - Fleming has performed leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala and around the world.

CSO changes concert time for Super Bowl 2014
Superbowl Promo By Ray Mark Rinaldi
A&E Critic, Denver Post
1/22/2014

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra won't be playing against the Broncos Feb. 2. The ensemble is moving its scheduled concert on that day to avoid conflicting with the Super Bowl.

The performance will take place at noon, instead of 2:30 p.m. The Denver Broncos play the Seattle Seahawks at 4:30 p.m.

The CSO isn't going down in defeat without a sense of humor, and a nod to the home team.  Ticket prices will be half-off for those who show up in Broncos colors. "Seahawks fans pay double," according to the CSO.

MEMBER FEATURE

David Keeling
David Keeling Welcome! I am a Denver-based pianist, teacher, composer, and multi-instrumentalist.

As a performer, my specialty is ragtime piano, a delightful piece of American heritage. I also play ragtime's heir, jazz, from across the decades. To add variety to my sets, I include instrumental versions of pop songs by the Beatles and others, which fit in seamlessly, and the occasional blues, novelty piano piece, and tango.

No piano at your venue? My full-size keyboard sounds great and is very compact. I'm happy to travel with it around the Front Range and beyond.

Thanks for visiting my website! Please take a look at this video, where I play Scott Joplin's Gladiolus Rag, one of my favorite rags.

Englewood Arts Presents offers up a Valentine weekend performance by the Ainomäe Ensemble in works by Czech-born composer Erwin Schulhoff and German-born composers Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms.  Artistic director Silver Ainomäe (cello) and his wife, Anne (viola), will perform along with CSO musicians Myroslava Bartels and Boram Kang, violins; Phillip Stevens, viola; and Thomas Heinrich, cello.

The program:
Schulhoff String Sextet
Strauss Capriccio
Brahms Sextet No.1 in B-flat major

Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was one of several European musicians whose successful and promising careers were prematurely terminated by the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany and whose works have been rarely recognized or performed.  He was greatly influenced by the works of Richard Strauss (1864-1949) who was 68 when the Nazi regime rose to power.

Although Richard Strauss never joined the Nazi party, he was initially drawn into cooperating with the early Nazi regime in hopes that Hitler - an ardent music lover who admired Strauss' work - would support German art and culture.  Strauss' need to protect his Jewish daughter-in-law and Jewish grandchildren also contributed to his behavior.  Capriccio, the overture from Strauss' final opera of the same name, is the only operatic overture of its kind that stands as a piece of pure chamber music for strings and also contributes to the action of the opera.

Both Schulhoff and Strauss were inspired by the works of Brahms (1833-1897), and what sextet program would be complete without his beloved Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major?  Please bring your Valentine and experience these lush string instrument combinations performed by some of Denver's finest musicians.

The 5 Things We Want to Hear in President Obama's State of the Union Speech
AFL-CIO - Invest in America 01/21/2014
Jackie Tortora

President Barack Obama will give his annual State of the Union address to the American people next week. But what is the state of our union? The vast majority of America's working families have experienced a raw deal in recent decades. Wages are falling, the gulf between the rich and everybody else is growing larger, we have a shrinking middle class and too many working families with no access to the American Dream.

But it doesn't have to be this way. Economic inequality doesn't just happen. It's manufactured by and for the 1% through bad economic policies crafted to make the rich even richer. And that can change, if our president lays out a bold and aggressive economic agenda to reverse these policies.

Here are five things we want to hear from President Obama's State of the Union address next Tuesday night.

Tax-Free "Charity" NFL Paid $29.5 Million To Commissioner And Only $2.1 To Charity
NFL Logo
January 23, 2014
by jonathanturley

There has long been a controversy over the tax-free status of the National Football League, which racks in massive profits while claiming to be a charity.  The latest figures will only deepen that controversy.  In 2012, the NFL gave only $2.3 million to charity and virtually all of that went to the NFL Hall of Fame.  In the meantime, it gave NFL commissioner Roger Goodell $29.5 million for what many consider the greatest - and easiest - job in the world.  Through cr
Roger Goodell
Commissioner Roger Goodell
eative bookkeeping, the NFL is also claiming to be actually in the red by some $316 million.
What is bizarre is that Goodell is making a tenth of what the NFL claimed to make in total assets in 2012 - $255 million.

Think of what that ratio would mean in large corporations.  The same year, Exxon made $16 billion . If Goodell was CEO of Exxon, he could demand 1,600,000,000 in salary.

The NFL is required to filed Form 990 where it claimed the $255 million in revenue -  up from $240 million in 2011.  It also has "assets" worth over $822 million.

Stopping unemployment benefits hurts Colorado's economy
Mike Cerbo
Guest Commentary
Denver Post

Mike Cerbo
Mike Cerbo, Exec. Director, Colorado AFL-CIO
Unemployment benefits have historically been our nation's most important safety net and lifeline for those who are out of work. Now they have expired for 20,000 Coloradans and the economic impact is already being felt.

The Great Recession hit close to home for many Colorado families. Since 2008, more than 24 million Americans have been able to rely on long-term unemployment insurance to stay on their feet until they found their next job and received their next paycheck.

Unfortunately, funding for this vital lifeline for jobless workers expired on Dec. 28 and benefits that kept millions out of poverty vanished. The failure to renew this benefit cost 20,000 Coloradans over $7 million during the first week that benefits lapsed, robbing families of a support system that remains essential to economic survival.

For the families of those who are out of work, modest unemployment benefits, averaging just $300 a week, represent the difference between a place to live and food on the table - or not.

When families can make ends meet using the bridge of unemployment benefits, studies show it creates jobs and can boost the economy. The Congressional Budget Office considers unemployment benefits to be one of the most important and effective economic stimulus programs. A decline in buying power can have significant impact on a weak economy.

By not extending unemployment benefits we are robbing businesses of customers and costing the country more than 240,000 jobs that would be saved by an extension, including over 3,500 jobs in Colorado. As the year goes on, the consequences will be even worse when benefits for 3.6 million Americans are scheduled to expire.

Recent congressional budget negotiations failed to help the millions of people who want to work but cannot find employment. Especially in times of need, Colorado working families must demand that Congress creates good jobs and restore the historic safety net of unemployment benefits. Members of Congress have a chance to redeem themselves by voting to restore unemployment benefits as they return to work this month.

Colorado families urge Congressman Mike Coffman to show leadership and vote to extend unemployment benefits for the hardest hit. We cannot afford for him not to.

Mike Cerbo is the executive director of the Colorado AFL-CIO and a former state legislator.

DYAO and The Denver Brass are excited to announce the formation of a student brass ensemble!  The ensemble will be composed of 14-16 brass musicians between the ages of 12 and 18.

Auditions for the brass ensemble will take place on January 30, 2014 at the Lamont School of Music.  Students who play French horn, trumpet, trombone, or tuba are eligible.  The audition fee is only $25.  Tuition for the ensemble is $200, and financial scholarships are available.

Rehearsals, conducted by Joe Martin (Associate Professor of Trombone & Euphonium and Director of Wind Ensemble at the University of Denver) will take place Thursday evenings at the Lamont School of Music.  The culminating concert DYAO Logo will be held in April 2014 Side-by-Side The Denver Brass!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
