New DMA Website Nearing Completion
|
Online payments will be accepted by next week The DMA is [almost] ready to unveil a new website that, among many new features, will securely accept online payments for periodic dues. We looked deeply into matters of online credit security and we can assure you that this new site incorporates the latest encryption technology for added protection. Over the last few days some members may have received an auto-generated email directing you to the new site (www.denvermusicians.org). This is not spam. Your account is being setup and webmaster Jeff Anttila expects he will have the site up as soon as this Friday, January 17. You can still visit the old website at http://www.dmamusic.org or call (303-573-1717) or stop by the office to make a membership payment. For questions related to the website, you can contact Jeff Anttila at jeff.ant@gmail.com or Pete Vriesenga at pvriesenga@aol.com.

Minnesota Orchestra, musicians reach contract agreement
| KARE 11,Minneapolis, Saint Paul, MN Staff, KARE January 14, 2014 MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Orchestra Board of Directors and musicians ratified a new collective bargaining agreement, which will go into effect on Feb. 1. "This ratified agreement reflects that both the musicians and the board made concessions on issues of importance to them, which was necessary in order to bring the organization together again," said Board Negotiating Chair Richard Davis. "Our success now depends on our ability to move forward with positive spirit as one organization, and we are very pleased to begin this work with the musicians and to engage our audiences with music again." "Musicians are pleased that we have come to a solution with our board, and we are ready to work with them to begin the hard work that lies ahead," said Clarinetist and musician negotiator Tim Zavadil. "We are anxious to start performing for our community at home in Orchestra Hall once again." Read On |

Minnesota Reaches A Deal
|
Minnesota Reaches A Deal January 15, 2014 | Drew McManus "What's critically important to keep in mind at this juncture is that neither side has released a full, unedited copy of the agreement so any claims or stated terms are, as of now, unverified. And given the dispute's history of vociferous tactics, it is fair to say that any reliable analysis and/or review of current claims will have to wait until the agreement is released." Drew McManus

It's Time to Celebrate Success Stories
| by Michael Kaiser
Mon Jan 13, 2014 Huffington Post I sat in a meeting with a respected businessman the other day who was skeptical about the ability of a specific arts organization to turn around its financial health. "Everywhere you look," he said, "arts organizations are going bankrupt. They all are struggling now." This was news to me. Not every arts organization is struggling. Ask the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Penumbra Theatre (of St. Paul, Minnesota), Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and numerous other thriving arts organizations around the United States. The Detroit Symphony just announced record fundraising results and the Kennedy Center has had 14 years in a row of an operating surplus. And there are so many other examples I could cite. Read On |

Englewood Arts Presents: SIMPLY MOZART Date: Saturday ~ January 18, 2014 Time: 2:00 PM Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)*
 | Silver Ainomäe |
Englewood Arts Presents rings in the New Year with a sure crowd-pleaser ~ the chamber music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the form of 3 of his quintets. This concert is the 2nd within the mini-series created by Englewood Arts' new Artistic Director and CSO principal cellist, Silver Ainomäe. Silver and his wife, Anne (viola), will perform in all of the works on this concert along with other CSO musicians. The program includes Mozart's Horn Quintet in E-flat Major, K.407 showcasing the CSO's newest addition to the horn section, Kolio Plachkov. The horn quintet was composed for Austrian horn virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb who supplemented his meager income as a horn player by opening a cheese shop in a suburb of Vienna. Mozart's father, Leopold, helped to finance the cheese shop! Also on the program will be String Quintet No. 4 in G-minor, K.516. This work expands the string quartet by an additional viola. The added violist will be CSO Associate Concertmaster, Claude Sim, in a new role! Also performing will be 2 of the newest additions to the CSO violin section, Boram Kang and Stirling Trent. Finally, one of Mozart's greatest and most beloved chamber music works, the Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581, will feature the CSO's fabulous new principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer. Need we say more? We hope you will decide to escape the January cold and join us in the warmth and intimacy of Hampden Hall for this concert. As always, the music will be accompanied by fun and informative insights from the musicians. Tickets are now available online and also make fabulous holiday gifts for the music-lovers in your life! Throw Your Hands Up at Me: Beyoncé Drops Some Real Talk on Gender Equality
|
Throw Your Hands Up at Me: Beyoncé Drops Some Real Talk on Gender Equality 01/13/2014 Jackie Tortora
 | Beyoncé Knowles-Carter | Gender equality is not a reality yet, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter writes for the Shriver Report. Knowles-Carter points out that even though women make up half of the workforce, the average female worker only makes 77% of what a working man makes. She writes: But unless women and men both say this is unacceptable, things will not change. Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers and sisters earn more-commensurate with their qualifications and not their gender. Equality will be achieved when men and women are granted equal pay and equal respect.
Humanity requires both men and women, and we are equally important and need one another. So why are we viewed as less than equal? These old attitudes are drilled into us from the very beginning. We have to teach our boys the rules of equality and respect, so that as they grow up, gender equality becomes a natural way of life. And we have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible. Read the rest of Gender Equality Is a Myth!.

Enclosed, please find two of my favorite TV characters, one present day, one past, one ficticious, one not so much! If ever a writer sat down to write a present day script for a TV show and wanted it to imitate a gangster show from years gone by, you could not in your wildest dreams write anything where art imitates real life any closer than what we're seeing being played out by my brand new TV favorite, the present day Governor of New Jersey and past episodes of that old TV hit "The Sopranos." To begin with, both main characters have a lot in common. They're both large men with long time weight problems. They're both loud mouth bully's who could charm the rattles off a snake! Both have those overbearing personalities loved by some and hated and feared by others. Both have devious tyrant characteristics that demand control and respect and both can come up with more excuses than an east coast investment banker when something goes wrong!

Building Maine's Economy, One Child Laborer at a Time
|
by Mike Hall 1/10/2014
Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R), whose pants burst into flames over an outrageously false claim about lazy Mainers in October, is back in the headlines over a bizarre scheme to put the state's economy back on its feet by putting 12-year-olds to work. Apparently the state's child labor laws that require children younger than 16 to get a work permit and meet other requirements "are causing damage to our economy," LePage told a business group in Augusta on Tuesday. He said there "was nothing wrong" with children working "at a store sorting bottles at 12 years old." He didn't bother to say how having little Jimmy and Jane sorting pop bottles and sweeping floors would boost Maine's economy. Perhaps he'll enlighten us later.

13,000 Teamster UPS Freight Workers Get New Contract
|
Posted: January 14, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham A new five year national contract will be implemented for 13,000 UPS freight workers represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The workers voted overwhelmingly to approve the contract. It includes a $2.50 per hour raise over the five year deal, making Teamster UPS workers the highest paid in the industry according to the union. The union says the new contract also improves and protects pension benefits, lowers health insurance co-pays while maintaining strong benefits, provides the ability for more part-time workers to become full-time and lowers the monthly cost for retiree health insurance.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
