San Antonio Symphony Posts Surplus for 2012-2013
|
By David Hendricks January 7, 2014 San Antonio Express News
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Symphony has declared a 2012-13 budget surplus of $60,000 - even though it used $503,000 in advance ticket sales for the current concert season to finish paying for the budget year that ended Aug. 31. The $60,000 surplus will be applied to operations in the current budget year, symphony President David Gross said Monday.
 | The organization will be able to move into the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in September as planned. | Plowing proceeds from advance ticket sales into the prior year's budget isn't new, but the amount is greater this time. In the two previous years, the symphony said it applied about $355,000 per year in advance season-ticket sales to the previous fiscal year's budget. Lauren Eberhart, a musician spokeswoman, said the practice of borrowing from advance sales is a common practice in the orchestra industry. "I don't see that as a big problem," said Eberhart, a trumpet player who is chairwoman of the orchestra committee. "In general, it looks like everything is headed in the right direction. Ending up with a surplus will get applause from the musicians. We're looking forward to more good reports from the office."

'JFK Customs destroyed 11 of my instruments'
|
December 31, 2013 by Norman Lebrecht artsjournalblogs - 233 Comments
A few minutes ago, we reached the flute virtuoso Boujemaa Razgui by phone to discuss the assault on his instruments by US Customs at JFK airport. A Canadian citizen, based in New York and with a green card employment permit, Boujemaa was flying home from Marrakech, Morocco, when his baggage was opened by Customs at JFK. 'I told them I had these instruments for many years and flew with them in and out,' he said. 'There were 11 instruments in all. They told me they were agricultural products and they had to be destroyed. There was nothing I could do. The ney flute can be made with bamboo. Is that agricultural?' Boujemaa was both upset and unwilling to risk a confrontation with the US authorities. We did not press him for further particulars. He does not know what to do next. But he does appear to be the victim of state injustice. What do the lawyers among our readers think he should do? Read On |

Second Tuesdays at Trinity, 1/14
|
Start the New Year with a fabulous evening of music for String Quartet by Russian composers.
 | Rachmaninoff |
Tuesday evening, January 14th at 7:30 p.m., Second Tuesdays at Trinity will welcome John Hilton and Catherine Beeson, violins; Mary Cowell, viola; and Charles Lee, cello; in a tantalizing program including the Romance and Scherzo for String Quartet by Rachmaninov, String Quartet #7 by Shostakovich, and Five Novelettes by Glazunov. Written at age 17, Rachmaninov's incomplete String Quartet #1 shows us a composer with an ear to the past and an eye on the future. His "Romance" clearly draws on Tchaikovsky's melodic influence.
 | Shostakovich |
Shostakovich, a king among string quartet composers, dedicated the 7th of his 15 quartets to the memory of his wife. Written during a period of relative creative freedom, it is his first string quartet in a minor key and a tautly constructed 14 minute whirlwind of highly personal themes.
 | Glazunov |
Finishing the evening is Glazunov's "Five Novelettes" which allows us to travel to Spain, Hungary, and the Orient through a Russian tourist's lens. The performance will include lively commentary along with audience Q&A, and will be followed by a "meet and greet" reception. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students through high school. To pre-reserve, call 303-422-3656 x6000 or click on the "2nd Tuesdays" link at www.tpcarvada.org. Trinity Presbyterian Church is located at 7755 Vance Drive, Arvada.

Englewood Arts Presents: SIMPLY MOZART Date: Saturday ~ January 18, 2014 Time: 2:00 PM Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)*
 | Silver Ainomäe |
Englewood Arts Presents rings in the New Year with a sure crowd-pleaser ~ the chamber music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the form of 3 of his quintets. This concert is the 2nd within the mini-series created by Englewood Arts' new Artistic Director and CSO principal cellist, Silver Ainomäe. Silver and his wife, Anne (viola), will perform in all of the works on this concert along with other CSO musicians. The program includes Mozart's Horn Quintet in E-flat Major, K.407 showcasing the CSO's newest addition to the horn section, Kolio Plachkov. The horn quintet was composed for Austrian horn virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb who supplemented his meager income as a horn player by opening a cheese shop in a suburb of Vienna. Mozart's father, Leopold, helped to finance the cheese shop! Also on the program will be String Quintet No. 4 in G-minor, K.516. This work expands the string quartet by an additional viola. The added violist will be CSO Associate Concertmaster, Claude Sim, in a new role! Also performing will be 2 of the newest additions to the CSO violin section, Boram Kang and Stirling Trent. Finally, one of Mozart's greatest and most beloved chamber music works, the Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581, will feature the CSO's fabulous new principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer. Need we say more? We hope you will decide to escape the January cold and join us in the warmth and intimacy of Hampden Hall for this concert. As always, the music will be accompanied by fun and informative insights from the musicians. Tickets are now available online and also make fabulous holiday gifts for the music-lovers in your life! IAM Workers File NLRB Charges after Boeing Contract Vote
|
Extremely Upset IAM District 751 Workers File NLRB Charges, Demand Re-Vote On Boeing "Corporate Extortion Plan" Posted: January 7, 2014 by laborradio By Doug Cunningham [Connie Kelliher]: "It's really a corporate extortion plan by Boeing trying to make aerospace a race to the bottom. There was about seven to eight thousand members that didn't vote on it and it was such a slim margin - 300 votes either way would have changed it. That means that about 37 1/2 percent of the members actually got to decide the fate for the next ten years which erases 78 years of collective bargaining history." IAM District 751 spokesperson Connie Kelliher. Many IAM District 751 Boeing machinists are very angry about the vote forced on them by their international union that destroyed defined benefit pensions, increased health care costs and in effect diminished wages. Some members have filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board and are demanding a re-vote when a true majority of IAM Boeing members would have a chance to cast ballots. Kelliher says due to members being away on holidays vacation about 25 percent of members didn't vote on this concessionary contract proposal. Read On

Are Unions Useful Anymore?

 | Tell me if you've heard this one before: "Unions were good at one time, but haven't they outlived their usefulness?" This statement is old hat for those who want to crush workers' rights on the job. How old? The revelation at the 48-second mark says it all. |

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
