AFM President Hair Blasts Board of Locked Out MN Orchestra
AFM President Hair Blasts Board of Locked Out MN Orchestra

October 1, 2013

New York, NY - AFM International President Ray Hair took aim at the Minnesota Orchestral Association Board of Directors tonight, calling for a boycott of the board members' companies at a rally held in downtown Minneapolis on the steps of a newly-renovated but darkened Orchestra Hall. The rally, attended by hundreds of music lovers and union members from throughout the Twin Cities area, marked the one-year anniversary of a lockout imposed after the musicians' union refused a contract ultimatum that sought a 30% cut in pay and regressive work rules.

"The board decided to use starvation as a weapon against defenseless orchestra musicians to force unjustified contract concessions that are unparalleled in the workplace of an orchestra of this stature," Hair said. When the lockout started, the Minnesota Orchestra was regarded as one of the greatest orchestras in the world. The lockout has also deprived musicians of insurance coverage for health care and medicine.

Calling out many of the board members by name, Hair also called for a boycott of the companies they represent - including Wells Fargo Bank, US Bank, General Mills, United Health Care, 3M Company, Land 'O Lakes, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, and Friends of the Orchestra, which Hair referred to as "a misnomer."

"The board has brought shame upon itself, upon the Twin Cities area, upon the State of Minnesota, and upon orchestra managements across the country. It has shown no remorse for the pain inflicted upon these great musicians," said Hair. "No longer can these board members refer to themselves as 'responsible stewards of great artistry' when they starve and torture the men and women of the orchestra."

Over the weekend, an ongoing confidential mediation process between the parties led by former US Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, a renowned peacemaker, broke down after the board bypassed Senator Mitchell and made a regressive offer directly to the musicians that would cut paychecks by up to 25% over three years. After the orchestra unanimously rejected that offer, the board cancelled planned performances at Carnegie Hall, a move that prompted the departure of Maestro Osmo Vanska this morning.

Too Hot To Handel
2013/14 Holiday
Too Hot To Handel

Leslie Stifelman, conductor
Too Hot To Handel Chorus, Mary Louise Burke, associate director

The joyful holiday favorite returns for its 16th year of bringing audiences to their feet! This exuberant jazz, gospel and R&B-infused concert brilliantly reinvents Handel's Messiah. Featuring guest soloists and the Too Hot to Handel Chorus, this truly exhilarating night of music will have you rejoicing in the aisles.

A Message from Conductor Laureate Marin Alsop
As the co-creator of Too Hot to Handel: The Gospel Messiah, it has been my honor to conduct this special concert for Denver audiences for the past fifteen years. I know it's a part of your holiday tradition -- as it has been part of mine. This year, I'm delighted to introduce you to my dear friend and protégé Leslie Stifelman, a celebrated conductor, pianist, educator and filmmaker who shares our love of this now-classic work. In fact, with Bob Christianson, Gary Anderson and myself, Leslie helped create the very first performance of Too Hot to Handel at New York's Lincoln Center in 1993. And in 2011, Leslie served as Music Supervisor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's performance of the program at Carnegie Hall, which I conducted. Whether conducting in Philadelphia, London, Seattle, Milwaukee or Denver, Leslie wins over audiences with the passion, personality and skill she brings to the podium. I know you're going to love her.

About Leslie Stifelman
Leslie Stifelman is a multi-talented performer and conductor known for her extensive creative collaborations and partnerships. Her work spans the world of music through performances, recordings, television and films extending from the concert hall to Broadway, and her projects have been awarded the highest honors in the arts and media including the Peabody®, Grammy® and Tony® Awards. Her music career spans more than three decades, collaborating with some of the world's most esteemed orchestras, performers, choreographers, directors and recording companies.

Englewood Arts Presents, 1/18/2014
Englewood Arts Presents:  SIMPLY MOZART
Date: Saturday ~ January 18, 2014
Time: 2:00 PM
Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)*
Silver Ainomäe
Silver Ainomäe

Englewood Arts Presents rings in the New Year with a sure crowd-pleaser ~ the chamber music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the form of 3 of his quintets.  This concert is the 2nd within the mini-series created by Englewood Arts' new Artistic Director and CSO principal cellist, Silver Ainomäe.  Silver and his wife, Anne (viola), will perform in all of the works on this concert along with other CSO musicians.

The program includes Mozart's Horn Quintet in E-flat Major, K.407 showcasing the CSO's newest addition to the horn section, Kolio Plachkov.  The horn quintet was composed for Austrian horn virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb who supplemented his meager income as a horn player by opening a cheese shop in a suburb of Vienna.  Mozart's father, Leopold, helped to finance the cheese shop!

Also on the program will be String Quintet No. 4 in G-minor, K.516.  This work expands the string quartet by an additional viola.  The added violist will be CSO Associate Concertmaster, Claude Sim, in a new role!  Also performing will be 2 of the newest additions to the CSO violin section, Boram Kang and Stirling Trent.

Finally, one of Mozart's greatest and most beloved chamber music works, the Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581, will feature the CSO's fabulous new principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer.  Need we say more?

We hope you will decide to escape the January cold and join us in the warmth and intimacy of Hampden Hall for this concert.  As always, the music will be accompanied by fun and informative insights from the musicians.  Tickets are now available online and also make fabulous holiday gifts for the music-lovers in your life!

There are reports that show without the massive level of prefunding of retiree healthcare benefits at the US Postal Service they would have posted a $600 million dollar profit.  Most recently the Postmaster General told the media the post office enjoyed a 19% surge in volume of packages.  In the last two years 150 mail processing plants have been closed and hours have been slashed at thousands of post office nationwide.  It is time to change direction.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
