In Memory - Susanne Hamilton
|
 Susanne Hamilton, 1928-2013
Susanne Wilmersdoerffer (Wilmers) Hamilton, was born in Bayreuth, Germany on November 5th, 1928. She passed away peacefully on December 14th, 2013, at age 85. She escaped Hitler's Nazi regime in 1937 with her parents, Max and Edith Wilmersdoerffer, on the S.S. Washington.
Susanne grew up in St. Louis, Missouri after emigrating through Ellis Island. She attended Soldan High School and Washington University. An accomplished cellist and teacher, Susanne was passionate about reading string quartets and piano trios, and played the cello for over 70 years. She studied with Orlando Cole and David Finckel, and adored her time as a cello student at the Tanglewood and Interlochen music festivals. She performed with the San Antonio and New Jersey Symphonies. She had a life long love of the fine arts, and during her years in Summit, New Jersey, often visited the Metropolitan Museum, Morgan Library and the Frick Gallery. Susanne was an avid reader, and could knock off the NY Times crossword puzzles in record time.
She was pre-deceased by her parents and maternal grandmother Bella Treumann Berliner, who were some of her family to survive the Holocaust; and by her paternal grandparents, Gutta and Julius Wilmersdoerffer. The H.M. Wilmersdoerffer store is an historic building in Bayreuth, Germany. The Nazi regime scattered her family, who emigrated to Israel, England, and Australia. Susanne translated her grandmother Bella's diary into English, which was written while Bella was in hiding in Holland for three years, during the Holocaust. The diary is in the archives of the Leo Baeck House in New York City. Her musical legacy lives on in her daughter Barbara and granddaughter Lily.
She is survived by her daughters Barbara Hamilton (Paul Primus), Margaret Hamilton (Frank Garner), Elizabeth Jutila (Lauri), and by grandchildren Rachel, Aaron and Ethan Garner; Lily Rebekah and Joshua Berliner Primus; Kelly Clance and Dane Jutila; and 3 great grandchildren Sadie, Tess and Kate. Special thanks go to the staff at Sunrise Senior Living facility and Vitas Hospice, who showed Susanne great kindness in the last year of her life.

Taylor Swift Donates $100,000 To Nashville Symphony

Taylor Swift, who celebrates her 24th birthday today (Dec. 13), has made a $100,000 donation to the Nashville Symphony. The unexpected early Christmas gift surprised and delighted symphony representatives at a meeting facilitated by Dave Pomeroy, President of AFM Local 257, and attended by members of Swift's organization.
"Taylor, who is a member of our local [community], is not only an amazing talent with fans all across the globe; she is also an incredibly generous artist who has never failed to demonstrate her devotion to not only her own band, but also to the greater Nashville community and our musicians. We applaud her fantastic contribution to Music City's renowned orchestra. Thank you, Taylor, and 'Happy Birthday' too!" Pomeroy said.

The warm sounds of the holidays fill Boettcher Concert Hall in this annual Christmas spectacular. This season's celebration focuses on the music and magic of the season, showcasing the Colorado Symphony's annual collaboration with the Colorado Children's Chorale and the Colorado Symphony Chorus. This concert features exciting surprises and special guests, including music from long-time audience favorite Sam Lancaster's "Christmas in Colorado" CD. The Rocky Mountain Ringers, a community handbell ensemble of advanced ringers who have performed together since 1996, will join the symphony and play solo, and Ben Utecht, former NFL star turned singer, will hit the stage to read A Night Before Christmas and perform songs from his Christmas album. Santa will be onstage, of course, to round out the celebration. Don't miss this warm, musical holiday experience.

As the co-creator of Too Hot to Handel: The Gospel Messiah, it has been my honor to conduct this special concert for Denver audiences for the past fifteen years. I know it's a part of your holiday tradition -- as it has been part of mine. This year, I'm delighted to introduce you to my dear friend and protégé Leslie Stifelman, a celebrated conductor, pianist, educator and filmmaker who shares our love of this now-classic work. In fact, with Bob Christianson, Gary Anderson and myself, Leslie helped create the very first performance of Too Hot to Handel at New York's Lincoln Center in 1993. And in 2011, Leslie served as Music Supervisor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's performance of the program at Carnegie Hall, which I conducted. Whether conducting in Philadelphia, London, Seattle, Milwaukee or Denver, Leslie wins over audiences with the passion, personality and skill she brings to the podium. I know you're going to love her.

Englewood Arts Presents rings in the New Year with a sure crowd-pleaser ~ the chamber music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the form of 3 of his quintets. This concert is the 2nd within the mini-series created by Englewood Arts' new Artistic Director and CSO principal cellist, Silver Ainomäe. Silver and his wife, Anne (viola), will perform in all of the works on this concert along with other CSO musicians.
The program includes Mozart's Horn Quintet in E-flat Major, K.407 showcasing the CSO's newest addition to the horn section, Kolio Plachkov. The horn quintet was composed for Austrian horn virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb who supplemented his meager income as a horn player by opening a cheese shop in a suburb of Vienna. Mozart's father, Leopold, helped to finance the cheese shop!
Also on the program will be String Quintet No. 4 in G-minor, K.516. This work expands the string quartet by an additional viola. The added violist will be CSO Associate Concertmaster, Claude Sim, in a new role! Also performing will be 2 of the newest additions to the CSO violin section, Boram Kang and Stirling Trent.
Finally, one of Mozart's greatest and most beloved chamber music works, the Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581, will feature the CSO's fabulous new principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer. Need we say more?
We hope you will decide to escape the January cold and join us in the warmth and intimacy of Hampden Hall for this concert. Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. The Music for Healing and Transition Program (MHTP) is the national training program to become a Certified Music Practitioner (CMP). A CMP is a musician who has been trained to play one-on-one by the bedside for patients in healthcare settings. This is a growing and rewarding field where one can "help others" and also be compensated for their time. In partnership with Project Cure, the Denver Rescue Mission and the Denver Musicians Association, DMA members Dan and Anna Leavitt are now in their second year leading an instrument drive to send to the Logos school in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

62% Of Black American Workers And 69% Of Latino Workers Have No Retirement Assets

The National Institute on Retirement Security says backs and Latinos in the United States own shockingly little assets for their retirements. In a recent report the institute says sixty-two percent of black American workers and sixty-nine percent of Latino workers own no assets in retirement accounts. The report also notes that three out of four black households and four out of five Latino households ages 25 to 64 have less than $10,000 in retirement savings. One out of two white households have less than $10,000 in retirement savings. In a different study the Economic Policy Institute found that the American retirement system simply doesn't work for most workers and underscores the importance of preserving and strengthening Social Security and defending the remaining defined benefit private pensions.

Community Band Seeking New Members

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Metro Community Band Openings

Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
