Detroit Symphony Hails Its Healthier Finances

The city of Detroit may be in bankruptcy, but the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is back in the black. The symphony planned to disclose on Thursday that it had balanced its budget for the first time since 2007. The orchestra ended the 2013 fiscal year with a small surplus after raising $18.9 million in contributions, a 43 percent increase over the year before. Ticket revenue rose to $6.26 million as the orchestra sold more subscriptions, it said.

NEWTON, Mass. - THIS is the season of giving, the time when Americans from all income levels make donations to support food pantries, health centers, art and educational institutions, and other organizations that are so important for our civic society. Many donors work hard to stretch their charitable dollars to provide the maximum benefit for those in need.
If only the federal government were as thoughtful.
The government does its own charitable giving, in the form of tax deductions. When an individual makes a donation to a qualifying organization, the federal government essentially pays a portion of that donation: A $1,000 donation from a donor in the highest tax bracket costs that donor only $604. The federal government kicks in the remaining $396 in the form of a reduction in taxes.
These charitable donations are estimated to cost the federal government almost $40 billion this year alone and over half a trillion dollars in the next 10 years. What is the public getting for this investment of resources? Sadly, not enough.
The federal government too often provides the deduction for donations that offer little or no benefit. Consider three examples:

The warm sounds of the holidays fill Boettcher Concert Hall in this annual Christmas spectacular. This season's celebration focuses on the music and magic of the season, showcasing the Colorado Symphony's annual collaboration with the Colorado Children's Chorale and the Colorado Symphony Chorus. This concert features exciting surprises and special guests, including music from long-time audience favorite Sam Lancaster's "Christmas in Colorado" CD. The Rocky Mountain Ringers, a community handbell ensemble of advanced ringers who have performed together since 1996, will join the symphony and play solo, and Ben Utecht, former NFL star turned singer, will hit the stage to read A Night Before Christmas and perform songs from his Christmas album. Santa will be onstage, of course, to round out the celebration. Don't miss this warm, musical holiday experience.

As the co-creator of Too Hot to Handel: The Gospel Messiah, it has been my honor to conduct this special concert for Denver audiences for the past fifteen years. I know it's a part of your holiday tradition -- as it has been part of mine. This year, I'm delighted to introduce you to my dear friend and protégé Leslie Stifelman, a celebrated conductor, pianist, educator and filmmaker who shares our love of this now-classic work. In fact, with Bob Christianson, Gary Anderson and myself, Leslie helped create the very first performance of Too Hot to Handel at New York's Lincoln Center in 1993. And in 2011, Leslie served as Music Supervisor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's performance of the program at Carnegie Hall, which I conducted. Whether conducting in Philadelphia, London, Seattle, Milwaukee or Denver, Leslie wins over audiences with the passion, personality and skill she brings to the podium. I know you're going to love her.

Our December concert will be presented ala the style of Dale's and my Timeless Music Concerts. While Johnny was a composer and we will feature some of those songs, you will also hear songs which are long associated with him, like Moonlight in Vermont, On Green Dolphin Street, and others.
Pianist Neil Bridge was in Johnny's Colorado quartet for many years. Dale Bruning played bass in Johnny's group for nearly three years. Dale also played guitar and led the group during Smith's vacation times.
Come hear stories about Johnny Smith, gleaned from the interviews of Lin Flanagan, and a few of my own (I was a publicist for Concord Jazz when they released Johnny's CDs), and listen to the incredible musical talents of Dale, Neil, Mark, and Paul - with Dale's own brilliant arrangements.

If you have not heard as yet, our dear friend Jim Hall died December 10th at age 83. The world of jazz mourns his death; the world of humanity loses one of its "Masters" of Kindness and Humility and Humor.

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. The Music for Healing and Transition Program (MHTP) is the national training program to become a Certified Music Practitioner (CMP). A CMP is a musician who has been trained to play one-on-one by the bedside for patients in healthcare settings. This is a growing and rewarding field where one can "help others" and also be compensated for their time. After an eight-year saga of first winning then losing collective bargaining rights, graduate student employees at NYU this week won a huge union victory. By an overwhelming pro-union vote of 98 percent, 1247 NYU graduate student workers are now members of the United Auto Workers union. NYU is the only private university ion America with collective bargaining rights for graduate employees. Matt Canfield says an incredible effort was made for eight years to sustain the solidarity and cohesion that led to this resounding union win.

Community Band Seeking New Members

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Metro Community Band Openings

Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
