Nelson Mandela and music: 10 essential anti-apartheid songs
By Randall Roberts, Los Angeles Times Pop Music Critic
December 5, 2013

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was, quite famously, a fan of Pyotr llych Tchaikovsky, but he grew uup exposed to the country's rich tradition of vocal groups forging a unique form of sacred rhythm music.

That changed while the former south African president and longtime democratic activist was imprisoned by the pro-apartheid government from 1962 to 1990. He wasn't allowed acces to music.

Artists, however, used Mandela's jailing to fuel global protest songs, and during his years in captivity, Mandela's messages were delivered on the wings of rhythm and melody.

Pearl Harbor - Popular Songs
http://library.umkc.edu/spec-col/ww2/pearlharbor/popular-songs.htm

The country's first peacetime military draft (September 16, 1940) raised the specter of conflict more than a year before Pearl Harbor. Americans sensed the possibility of war and popular song as well as other entertainment reflected this growing understanding. The 1941 film Sun Valley Serenade about a Norwegian war refugee traveling  with a big band, at once showcased the day's brightest radio stars and foreshadowed a life during wartime. Glenn Miller, the film's musical star, watched "Chattanooga Choo Choo" soar to the top of the charts in the fall of 1941. The song became the first record  to be formally certified a million-seller and it was the #1 hit single when December 7 plunged Americans headlong into a second World War. Popular radio entertainment now had a new role - sharing the airwaves with battlefront accounts and assertive political speeches that colored the radio dial.

Remembering Pearl Harbor Even as Pearl Harbor smoldered, musicians scrambled to the studio to memorialize the sneak attack and rally the home front. Recorded ten days after the Day of Infamy, band leader Sammy Kaye's recording of "Remember Pearl Harbor" hit the charts in January 1942, peaking at #3. Its immediate popularity spawned a wealth of patriotic anthems such as "We Did It Before And We'll Do It Again," "Goodbye, Mama (I'm Off To Yokohama)," "The Son-of-a-gun Who Picks On Uncle Sam," and "Let's Put The Axe To The Axis." Later, in March 1942, Peter "Doctor" Clayton brought the "Pearl Harbor Blues" to a burgeoning rhythm and blues audience.

Colorado Music Festival hires executive director
Boulder Daily Camera
Posted: 12/05/2013

The Colorado Music Festival & Center for Musical Arts has a new boss.

Now, David Pratt faces one of the biggest challenges of an impressive career -- finding a replacement for music director Michael Christie.

The Lafayette-based Colorado Music Festival informed its constituents Thursday it had hired Pratt, who served the past three years as executive director of the Savannah Philharmonic in Georgia.

Pratt succeeds Catherine Underhill, who resigned after 11 years as executive director to return to her hometown, Syracuse, N.Y., to become managing director of the town's fledgling Symphoria. Underhill took over the CMF in Christie's third season in 2003, and her most notable achievement was overseeing the 2009 merger of the Colorado Music Festival with the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts.

Milwaukee orchestra to shrink from 79 to mid-60s
By Jim Higgins of the Journal Sentinel
Dec. 5, 2013

The financially troubled Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra has reached an agreement with its musicians that will reduce the size of the orchestra and should provide a balanced budget for the 2014-'15 season.

But first, President Mark Niehaus said, the MSO needs to raise $5 million in donations within the next two months to pay off deficits, stem an urgent cash-flow crisis and stay in business.

The orchestra today has 79 members. As the result of the restructuring agreement with musicians, Niehaus expects the orchestra will be in the "mid to high 60s" next season. The departures will come through retirement and attrition; no musicians will be laid off, he said. He expects savings of $1.2 million from the downsizing. A negotiated change in the musicians' health insurance will bring another $225,000 in savings.

2013/14 Pops
Ozomatli

Ozomatli's last appearance with the Colorado Symphony ended a night of mind-blowing music with musicians and audience members dancing their way out of the concert hall and into the lobby! Don't miss your chance to join the party!

In their sixteen years together as a band, celebrated Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli have gone from being hometown heroes to being named U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors. Their music - an urban Latino-and beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga - has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around L.A.

Please be advised that the annual Parade of Lights will be held in Denver on Friday and Saturday evening. We encourage everyone to plan extra time to get to the concert. For more information, please click here.

Trumka on Mandela's Passing
He 'Was a Gentle, Yet Determined, Man Who Fought for His Convictions'
12/05/2013

Nelson Mandela AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka responds to the news of former South African President Nelson Mandela's passing this evening:

President Nelson Mandela gave more than 60 years of his life fighting for the rights of South Africans and all of humanity. He was a gentle yet determined man who fought for his convictions.

In 1964, Nelson Mandela arrived on Robben Island, where he would spend 18 years confined to a small cell, forced to do hard labor in a quarry. Despite these hardships, Mandela never wavered in his commitment to social and economic justice for the people of South Africa and the world.

He told the court that sentenced him, "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal for which I hope to live, and to see realized. But my Lord, if it needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die

Workers Need A McLiving Wage

Click to Share

Yesterday, thousands of fast-food workers went on strike and organized rallies in more than 100 cities demanding a living wage, because, as New York strikers said,
"We can't survive on $7.25."1

These efforts drew so much attention, even President Obama took notice, calling for an increase in the federal minimum wage in solidarity with "airport workers, and fast-food workers, and nurse assistants, and retail salespeople who work their tails off and are still living at or barely above poverty." And, as a result of all this organizing, legislation to increase the minimum wage is finally being seriously discussed in Washington.
2
All this didn't happen by accident-it's the result of amazing organizing by low-wage workers at companies like McDonald's and Walmart-and MoveOn members have been there to support it every step of the way.

We wanted to share with you some of the highlights of what MoveOn members did to make this moment possible.

On August 29, as fast-food workers marched off the job, more than 100,000 MoveOn members tuned in to watch a Robert Reich Labor Day video where Reich explains how to make sure working families get a bigger piece of the economic pie. And, more than 71,000 people signed Reich's petition calling for Walmart and McDonald's to pay employees a living wage.
Raising the Minimum Wage
The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013 would increase the federal minimum wage to $10.10 by 2015, in three steps of 95 cents each.  It would then adjust the minimum wage each year to keep pace with the rising cost of living starting in 2016 - a key policy reform known as "indexing," which ten states are already using to prevent the minimum wage from falling in value each year.  Finally, the proposed bill would raise the minimum wage for tipped workers - which has been frozen at a meager $2.13 per hour for more than twenty years - to 70% of the minimum wage.  The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013 would generate more than $32 billion in new economic activity, translating to 140,000 new full-time jobs as higher sales lead businesses to hire more employees.  Furthermore, of the workers who would benefit from this legislation, 88% are adults over the age of twenty, 56% are women, nearly half are workers of color, and over 43% have some college education.

For more information on the legislation and the current situation as well as what you can do to advocate for enactment, please see the attached Action Alert.

Thank you,

Hilary

Senator Udall Response to DMA Member Ed Knox re. NEA Funding
December 4, 2013

Dear Mr. Knox,

Thank you for contacting me regarding federal funding for the arts.  I appreciate hearing from you on this topic.
As you may know, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is the largest annual national funder of the arts in the United States.  Since its founding in 1965, NEA has awarded more than $4 billion to support artistic projects and programs in Colorado and the nation.  Last year alone, Colorado received over $2.5 million in grants from NEA that created jobs and benefited our communities.

Throughout my time in Congress, I have been a consistent supporter of NEA and the arts and humanities, more generally.  Beyond shaping our culture and breeding creativity and imagination, creative enterprises support a substantial portion of our economy, foster innovation and engage communities.  The arts also play an important role in our schools by encouraging young people to think creatively and develop problem-solving skills.  Rest assured that I will continue to support funding for the NEA, and know your views will guide me as I work on arts related issues in the U.S. Senate.

I will remain attentive to what you and other Coloradans have to say about matters before Congress, the concerns of our communities, and the issues facing Colorado and the nation.  My job is not merely about supporting or opposing legislation, but also about bridging the divide that has paralyzed our nation's politics.  For more information about my positions and to learn how my office can assist you, please visit my website at www.markudall.senate.gov.
Warm regards,

Mark Udall
U.S. Senator, Colorado

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
