Ask Your Congressperson to Support the National Endowment for the Arts
|
November 20, 2013
Dear AFM Members and Friends,
The House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior recently voted to cut the fiscal year 2014 National Endowment for the Arts budget by 49%. As professional musicians we understand how NEA funding not only brings the arts alive but generates jobs and tax revenues that support our communities.
In an effort to help you share your voice, we have developed a campaign that allows you to contact your federal representatives in the House and Senate. I encourage you to sign on to this campaign urging Congress to support President Obama's recommendation of $155 million for the agency. Members of Congress need to hear from you, their constituents who work as the leading professionals in the field.
Thank you in advance for supporting this campaign. If you need more information, please contact Alfonso Pollard, AFM Legislative Director on 202 274-4756. Or you can email him at apollard@afm.org.
If you have a problem with any of the links, simply paste this address into your web browser: http://afl.salsalabs.com/o/5873/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=7484
Thank you for your commitment and for your membership.
Sincerely,

Raymond M. Hair, Jr., International President American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada

Spain prosecutor defends jail time for pianist
|
By HERNAN MUNOZ and HAROLD HECKLE Nov. 15, 2013 1:22 PM EST
GIRONA, Spain (AP) - A prosecutor has defended her demand for jail time for a 27-year-old concert pianist and the musician's parents who were sued by a neighbor for allegedly causing years of noise pollution. During Friday's summation, prosecutor Emma Ruiz said professional pianist Laia Martin should serve 16 months for noise pollution and four months for causing her neighbor "psychological harm." Ruiz also asked that Martin be disqualified from any professional piano playing for six months and pay a fine of 6 euros ($8) a day for nine months. The case has caused a storm of ridicule and disbelief due to the harshness of the sentence being sought at a criminal court in the northeastern city of Girona. Martin, who was charged with noise pollution and causing injury, wiped away a tear in court Friday but declined to comment as the case wound up. The presiding judge is expected to issue a verdict within two weeks.

Colorado: Let's demand a livable minimum wage
|
I'm John Flud, a MoveOn member in Aurora, Colorado, and I started a petition to the Colorado General Assembly and Governor John Hickenlooper, which says:
We can't wait for Washington to raise the minimum wage. Colorado now has all three branches of the state government in Democratic hands. So let's take action here in this state.
Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.
Thanks!
-John Flud
This petition was created on MoveOn's online petition site, where anyone can start their own online petitions. John Flud didn't pay us to send this email-we never rent or sell the MoveOn.org list.
Want to support our work? MoveOn Civic Action is entirely funded by our 8 million members-no corporate contributions, no big checks from CEOs. And our tiny staff ensures that small contributions go a long way. Chip in here.

CEOs: 'Retirement Security Is Great for Me, but Not for You'
|
By Kenneth Quinnell
11/19/2013
AFL-CIO NOW
A new report from the Center for Effective Government and the Institute for Policy Studies shows that two groups of corporate CEOs pushing for cuts to Social Security benefits, such as the "chained" CPI, personally have massive retirement plans. They also have allowed massive deficits to grow in their employees' pension funds. While these CEOs-members of the Business Roundtable and the Fix the Debt Coalition-sit on retirement funds most people couldn't even dream of, they have hurt their own employees' retirement security and are looking to do the same for people who don't even work for them.
According to the report, more than 25% of Fix the Debt members are also members of the Business Roundtable, including more than half of the Business Roundtable's executive council. Fix the Debt is made up of more than 135 CEOs and tries to paint itself as very dedicated to serving the public, with the goal of protecting Social Security. The Business Roundtable, which includes more than 200 CEOs, doesn't even pretend that it cares about public interest.
Members of the Business Roundtable, the report shows, have retirement accounts more than 1,200 times greater than the median retirement savings of U.S. workers near retirement age. When they retire, the $14.5 million fund they average will give them monthly retirement payments of nearly $90,000. The average monthly payment for everyone else is about $70.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
