GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING, 11/18
Monday, November 18, 7:00 PM
Food & Beverages Available

AGENDA:
Vote on Proposed Dues Increases as formulated at our 9/23 and 10/29 Membership Meetings. Members present at both meetings gave their unanimous support for necessary increases given DMA's achievements in past years coupled with the critical work that lies ahead. Members present also recognize that DMA lowered work dues under CBA's in 1995 (3% to 2%) and absorbed multiple AFM per capita increases in recent years without passing those increases on to the membership. Please see the Fall 2013 issue of the Denver Musician for details.

Click on the following link to view the DMA Board Proposal to be presented at the 11/18 meeting. Key points of the proposal are:

* $10 AFM dues increase effective Jan 1, 2014 (mandate per the 2013 AFM Convention)

* $10 local dues increase effective Jan 1, 2015 ("Inactive Dues" would increase only $9)

* Casual Work Dues to increase from 3% to 3.25%

* CBA Work Dues to increase from 2% to 2.25%

* Periodic audit shall move from 3 to 4-yr periods. Financial review shall move from 2 to 3 years.

* Add the following New Article to our bylaws to provide for electronic delivery Official Communications, e.g., newsletter, meeting announcements. This would not apply to Elections or Charges & Trials:

[NEW] ARTICLE V - OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION WITH MEMBERS:
Unless otherwise stated in these Bylaws, official written communications with members may be by US mail or private carrier; or by electronic transmission; or other form of wire or wireless communication. The DMA shall make necessary provisions to accommodate members without sufficient electronic access

Long-Term Benefits of Music Lessons

Childhood music lessons can sometimes leave painful memories, but they seem to carry benefits into adulthood. A new study reports that older adults who took lessons at a young age can process the sounds of speech faster than those who did not.

"It didn't matter what instrument you played, it just mattered that you played," said Nina Kraus, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University and an author of the study, which appears in The Journal of Neuroscience.

Union Puppet Masters? They Don't Have That Capacity.
Adaptistration,com
November 13, 2013   |  Drew McManus

It is a bit of a stretch to call recent events in the Minnesota Orchestra Association (MOA) lockout as developments. But in case you missed what transpired, here's what you need to know: two representatives from each side met in order to see if engaging in discussions with fewer participants involved might bring about some positive change. Simply put, it didn't; but what's worth noting is in the aftermath, representatives from both sides quickly went public with their respective PR points.

There was nothing new from musicians but one of the board appointed negotiation representatives, Doug Kelley, tossed out what has to be one of the most puzzling accusations yet during an radio interview with NPR's Euan Kerr: the lack of progress is the result of a union agenda.

I think the reason that Minnesota is such a battleground is because the International Union has said they are really trying to change the business model in Minnesota and that is not successful, we can't let that happen. And that's why I believe the musicians have adopted what we call the stonewall strategy which is not to negotiate, not to make counteroffers.

The union Kelley referenced is the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), to which the musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra belong and its Local (Local 30-73 AFM) is a signatory for the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). However, unlike other traditional organized labor negotiations, orchestra musicians are unique in that they elect their own negotiating committee from their direct members and select their own negotiator and/or attorney.

Ivy Street Ensemble

Englewood Arts Presents continues its Chamber Music of the Masters series on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 2:00pm with a return engagement by the popular Ivy Street Ensemble.

Ivy Street Ensemble was formed in 2001 and is comprised of three musicians from the Colorado Symphony ~ Cathy Peterson (flute), Erik Peterson (violin), and Phillip Stevens (viola).  Since its inception, the ensemble has presented a diverse array of chamber music works from the baroque era to the 21st century.  They perform throughout Colorado and also in Oregon as part of the Chintimini Chamber Music Festival.

In 2008 they were finalists in the National Flute Association Chamber Music Competition.  Winners of a grant from Chamber Music America, Ivy Street Ensemble premiered a commissioned work by Kenji Bunch in June 2013 (which will also be performed on the Englewood Arts Presents concert).  Classical music lovers in Denver have frequently heard the group on Colorado Public Radio broadcasts.

Ivy Street Ensemble regularly performs at elementary schools in the Denver-metro area.  Their young audiences are generally comprised of children ranging in age from 5-11 years old.  The ensemble's education concerts are geared toward introducing a variety of instruments, while at the same time giving a tangible lesson on theme and variation that children of all ages can comprehend.

The program on November 23 will include the following works:
Beethoven: Serenade for flute, violin and viola
CPE Bach: Sonata in A minor for solo flute
Mozart: Duo for Violin and Viola in B-flat major, K.424
Kenji Bunch: Serenade

As has become customary and FUN at these Englewood Arts Presents concerts, the musicians will provide comments, insights, and perspectives on the works they will be performing.

LABOR & POLITICS

It's the Cost that Counts! - Rod Taylor
By Rod Taylor, DMA Member

Rod Taylor One of the many things that have been exposed to the light of day recently since the implementation of the so called, "Affordable Care Act" is just how many people were (and still are) being scammed by so called "Health Care" providers. It all comes down to the same old saying that goes, "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is!"

Back in the good old days, these quack plans and quack providers used to be called by endearing terms like "snake oil" and "magic miracle cure" but nowadays they usually fall under the buzz word "scam." The most ridiculous part of all this is that the people who were being ripped off by these sleaze artists aren't thanking Barack Obama for exposing the scams to the light of day, they're blaming him for it!  At least he wasn't trying to kill grandma!

It makes you think about the term "penny wise and pound foolish" and reminds me of the story about the two highly intellectual individuals standing around griping about the cost of Obamacare. The conversation kind of goes like the script from an old Abbott and Costello movie.

The first one said, "My policy only costs me $167.00 bucks a month! "That's nothing" said the second, "Mine only costs me $58.00 per month! "Wow!" said the first, "that's a really hot price! What kind of benefits do you get?" "None" said the second, "but it only costs me $58 bucks a month!"

Walmart Associate Wants to Talk to you About CEO Pay
11/14/2013
By Janet Sparks

I've worked at Walmart in Baker, La., for eight years, and I've been a Walmart shareholder since I started. Times are tough for Walmart customers, but I want you to know that times are tough for many Walmart associates, too. We are stretching our paychecks to pay our bills and support our families. Many of us are not getting as many hours as we used to and that makes it even harder. Now the new associates in my store are not even hired as permanent employees. They are hired as temps with no benefits-not even a discount card.

So when I think about the fact that our CEO Mike Duke made more than $20 million last year-more than 1,000 times the average Walmart associate-with all due respect, I have to say, I don't think that's right. Most of his pay came from bonuses. At the store where I work, associates have received only two quarterly bonuses in the past five years. And the last one was just $26.17. As hard as we work, I think we deserve better, so do our customers and so do our shareholders.

That's why I am asking you to join me and send a letter to the the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) supporting a law that would require companies to disclose CEO-to-worker pay ratios. Investors deserve to know what workers are earning compared to CEOs at the companies they invest in.

Refusal to Lead House Republicans on Immigration Reform is 'Unconscionable'
11/13/2013
Jackie Tortora

Today AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka released the following statement on House Speaker John Boehner's refusal to put immigration reform to a vote:

Speaker Boehner's inability to lead his party to do the right thing on immigration reform is unconscionable. One year after he publicly pledged to pass comprehensive immigration reform, he and the Republican controlled House have nothing to show for it.

Incredibly, Boehner found time in his busy legislative calendar to bring to the floor and pass with near-unanimous Republican support a bill authored by Steve King that would deport DREAM-eligible youngsters. That's it for the entire year. Republicans have done nothing to end the deportation crisis that separates families, nothing to end the exploitation of workers and nothing to create a roadmap to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants and their families who are American in every way except on paper.

It is clear from Boehner's decision that a minority of anti-immigrant House Republicans holds the power, and are preventing a solution to one of our nation's most pressing problems. In fact, if the bi-partisan House bill H.R. 15 was put before the House today it would no doubt pass.

The AFL-CIO will not give up this fight until comprehensive immigration reform is passed in the Congress. If Boehner's House Republicans continue to block the way, we intend to make it clear that the Republican Party will pay a price at the ballot box for ignoring America's growing immigrant community.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
