Vote on Proposed Dues Increases as formulated at our 9/23 and 10/29 Membership Meetings. Members present at both meetings gave their unanimous support for necessary increases given DMA's achievements in past years coupled with the critical work that lies ahead. Members present also recognize that DMA lowered work dues under CBA's in 1995 (3% to 2%) and absorbed multiple AFM per capita increases in recent years without passing those increases on to the membership. Please see the Fall 2013 issue of the Denver Musician for details.

* $10 AFM dues increase effective Jan 1, 2014 (mandate per the 2013 AFM Convention)
* $10 local dues increase effective Jan 1, 2015 ("Inactive Dues" would increase only $9)
* Casual Work Dues to increase from 3% to 3.25%
* CBA Work Dues to increase from 2% to 2.25%
* Periodic audit shall move from 3 to 4-yr periods. Financial review shall move from 2 to 3 years.
* Add the following New Article to our bylaws to provide for electronic delivery Official Communications, e.g., newsletter, meeting announcements. This would not apply to Elections or Charges & Trials:

Obamacare Offers Musicians a Lifeline -
If They Can Understand It

Musicians, uninsured at greater rates than the general population in the United States, are coming to grasp the impact of the Affordable Care Act, the health-care reform law known as Obamacare. But like most Americans, they have a lot of learning to do.
A new survey found that 43% of creative artists and 53% of musicians lack health insurance. Conducted in July and August by the Future of Music Coalition and the Artists' Health Insurance Resource Center, the survey covers musicians as well as visual artists, filmmakers, actors and other creative professionals. Previous FMC surveys found 42% and 33% of musicians were uninsured in 2002 and 2010, respectively.
Unfortunately, artists aren't well-informed about the nuts and bolts of Obamacare. The FMC/AHIRC survey found that 55% of artists "don't understand it at all" or are "unsure" how the law would affect them. That number jibes with a recent Kaiser Family Foundation survey that found 47% of Americans have enough information on health-care reform to understand how it will affect them and their families.
"In this way, musicians are like everybody else," says Andy Bernstein, executive director at HeadCount, a not-for-profit best-known for voter registration that's working with the Department of Health and Human Services to help educate musicians on the law. "All the surveys say people are confused."

The parallels and connections between Impressionist art and music are deep and intriguing. Colorado Symphony Resident Conductor Scott O'Neil uses visual imagery to dive into the music of Debussy, Ravel and more to uncover how the artists and musicians of the period influenced and inspired each other. Impressionism is a featured concert in the Colorado Symphony's collaboration with the Denver Art Museum's Passport to Paris exhibition running October 27-February 9.

Englewood Arts Presents continues its Chamber Music of the Masters series on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 2:00pm with a return engagement by the popular Ivy Street Ensemble.
Ivy Street Ensemble was formed in 2001 and is comprised of three musicians from the Colorado Symphony ~ Cathy Peterson (flute), Erik Peterson (violin), and Phillip Stevens (viola). Since its inception, the ensemble has presented a diverse array of chamber music works from the baroque era to the 21st century. They perform throughout Colorado and also in Oregon as part of the Chintimini Chamber Music Festival.
In 2008 they were finalists in the National Flute Association Chamber Music Competition. Winners of a grant from Chamber Music America, Ivy Street Ensemble premiered a commissioned work by Kenji Bunch in June 2013 (which will also be performed on the Englewood Arts Presents concert). Classical music lovers in Denver have frequently heard the group on Colorado Public Radio broadcasts.
Ivy Street Ensemble regularly performs at elementary schools in the Denver-metro area. Their young audiences are generally comprised of children ranging in age from 5-11 years old. The ensemble's education concerts are geared toward introducing a variety of instruments, while at the same time giving a tangible lesson on theme and variation that children of all ages can comprehend.
The program on November 23 will include the following works:
Beethoven: Serenade for flute, violin and viola
CPE Bach: Sonata in A minor for solo flute
Mozart: Duo for Violin and Viola in B-flat major, K.424
Kenji Bunch: Serenade
As has become customary and FUN at these Englewood Arts Presents concerts, the musicians will provide comments, insights, and perspectives on the works they will be performing.

 Deja Blu is looking for a quick study who can cover a 4 hour New Year's Eve show. We are a variety dance band whose set list covers a wide range of genres of music. We would be concentrating primarily on 60's, 70's and 80's tunes with a dinner set included. We are a 6 piece band with male/female lead singers, so vocal ability is not necessary but it would be nice if you could lend backup harmonies. We rehearse in Arvada.
We are looking for a well- seasoned musician who knows and has played the majority of tunes on our set list for the night. The ability to step right in with limited rehearsal time is crucial. Apple starts fulfilling promise to create US manufacturing jobs

Apple has been talking a great deal over the last year about bringing some manufacturing back to the United States. Until now the company hadn't specified where those jobs would be and how many would be hired. In a statement released Monday, GT Advanced Technologies said it had reached an agreement with Apple to create materials at a new plant in Mesa, Arizona. In an interview with BusinessWeek Apple said the jobs would include 2,000 construction, manufacturing, and engineering positions. The company added that the facility will "run on 100 percent renewable energy." While it hasn't been officially announced it's believed that a recent hiring push of 1700 employees by Flextronics America in Austin, Texas is due to that company being contracted by Apple to build the next generation of Mac Pro. Apple has pledged to build that computer exclusively in the United States.

Community Band Seeking New Members

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Metro Community Band Openings
|
Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!
