In Memory - Gordon Dooley
|
Gordon Dooley Passed away on Monday, Oct. 28th at his home. Gordon was the consummate professional musician, gentleman and bandleader.
Gordon was born and raised in Yonkers, N.Y. "My father was a violinist. He taught violin. So I took up violin," Dooley said. He had a gift for music. In junior high in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., he put together a dance band. "One of the fellows - Charlie Beck - played trumpet," Dooley said. "One day, he said, 'Who wants to buy this old horn for 10 bucks?' And I said, 'I do.' I put away the violin forever, doing the music world a big favor."
Gordon went on to play with the bands of Glenn Miller and Harry James. He joined the Army during WWII and was assigned to a service band in Atlantic City, N.J. He was later transferred to Denver, serving at Buckley and Lowry.
After the war Gordon returned to Manhattan, NY, working steadily as a trumpet player. But, he ultimately grew tired of the music scene in NY and later relocated back to Denver where he formed the Gordon Dooley Orchestra.
There are no services scheduled, but a Celebration of Gordon's Life will be held on Sunday, November 10, 6 - 9 PM at the Bull and Bush, 4700 Cherry Creek Drive South, Denver. Louisville Orchestra aims for wider audience with new music director Teddy Abrams, 26
| Oct 28, 2013 Courier Journal Leaders of the Louisville Orchestra see an organization with a greater reach in the community under incoming music director 26-year-old Teddy Abrams. When he takes the reins from Jorge Mester next season, Abrams will be the youngest music director in the institution's 76-year history. "We do need to be aware of how people interact with music today in this era and to present music in (such) a way that people feel intensely and powerfully connected to both the music and the musicians," Abrams said at his introduction Monday afternoon at the Kentucky Center. Players in US orch vote to quit their union
| October 29, 2013 by Norman Lebrecht (39 Comments) In an unusual move that may prove a sign of the times, players in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra have voted to leave Local 502 of the American Federation of Musicians. Only 76 of some 175 eligible musicians cast their vote and they decided by a 49-27 split to go it alone. Trumpeter Michael Smith, who chairs the symphony's Negotiating Committee, said: 'For the health of our organization, it's really important that the musicians have a collaborative working relationship with the board and management.' The implications of the cessation could be considerable for orchs across the country where a tough economy may require unusual local concessions on both sides. Read On

In this unique combination film/live music event, we feature the intense film Wagner's Jews which exposes the Jewish connections of German opera composer, Richard Wagner - who was notoriously anti-Semitic, with his writings on the Jews later embraced by Hitler and the Nazis. This film shows the lesser-known side to this story.
Following the screening, as a response to the film, we feature the region's greatest classical ensemble, the Colorado Symphony, in a program highlighting the Jewish composers whose genius disproves Wagner's anti-Semitic assertions. Colorado composer Ofer Ben-Amots will introduce the program and give his perspective on the Wagner dilemma and of Jewish musicians of Wagner's day.

Gregory Alan Isakov, vocals
The Colorado Symphony welcomes contemporary folk musician Gregory Alan Isakov, known for his masterful lyrics and lush arrangements, for a collaborative exploration of his work. Isakov's newest record, The Weatherman, released on his independent record label, Suitcase Town Music, is garnering critical acclaim. The New York Times featured an exclusive stream of the full album, while Denver Westword proclaimed, "Bob Dylan once sang, 'You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows,' and you don't need to be a singer-songwriter to realize that Isakov has created something truly stunning here." Come witness Gregory Alan Isakov and his band perform favorites from all of his records. This collaboration with the symphony, of songs from Gregory's full catalogue, will be recorded live and released as a live album.

Keyboard/Organ player needed for NYE gig- Broomfield
|
Deja Blu is looking for a quick study who can cover a 4 hour New Year's Eve show. We are a variety dance band whose set list covers a wide range of genres of music. We would be concentrating primarily on 60's, 70's and 80's tunes with a dinner set included. We are a 6 piece band with male/female lead singers, so vocal ability is not necessary but it would be nice if you could lend backup harmonies. We rehearse in Arvada. We are looking for a well- seasoned musician who knows and has played the majority of tunes on our set list for the night. The ability to step right in with limited rehearsal time is crucial. This gig requires a double-rig and the ability to play horn parts. Please call or email Liz at 303-517-9852 or band@dejabluband.com

Video: McDonald's tells workers to get food stamps
|
A new recording captures the fast food giant's worker 1-800 number touting public assistance VIDEO By Josh Eidelson October 23, 2013 An audio recording released by labor activists Wednesday afternoon captures a staffer for McDonald's' "McResources Line" instructing a McDonald's worker how to apply for public assistance. The audio - excerpted in the campaign video below - records a conversation between Chicago worker Nancy Salgado, a ten-year employee currently making the Illinois state minimum wage of $8.25, and a counselor staffing the company's "McResources" 1-800 number for McDonald's workers. The McResources staffer offers her a number to "ask about things like food pantries" and tells her she "would most likely be eligible for SNAP benefits" which she explains are "food stamps." After Salgado asks about "the doctor," the staffer asks, "Did you try to get on Medicaid?" She notes it's "health coverage for low income or no income adults and children." "It was really, really upsetting," Salgado told Salon Wednesday, "knowing that McDonald's knows that they don't pay us enough, and we have to rely on this." Noting that McDonald's was "a billionaire company," she asked, "how can they not afford to pay us?"Read On

Smallest-Ever Social Security COLA Still Too Big for 'Chained' CPI Backers
|
Next year, the millions of Social Security recipients will see the smallest cost-of-living adjustment ever-just 1.5% or about $19 a month. If the politicians-and their billionaire friends who don't want to pay the same taxes workers do-who are pressing hard for the "chained" CPI benefit cut had their way, the adjustment would be even smaller than 2014's historic low.
Edward F. Coyle, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, says, "I hope this news about next year's Social Security COLA will cause politicians in Washington to reconsider their support for the 'chained' CPI."
How can anyone look at an increase of around 1.5% and think 'That's too big?' Clearly, these politicians need to spend more time talking to seniors who are struggling. Next year's increase will be 1.5%. Imagine if it were even less. Then imagine if that smaller increase were to be compounded over time. That is the 'chained' CPI.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
