Please Attend Meeting to Plan for Denver World Music Day Celebration, 10/28
| On Monday, October 28, 2013 at 7:00 PM the Denver Musicians Association will be hosting a consortium of musicians and concerned parties for a meeting to address a proper celebration of World Music Day on June 21. Cities around the world celebrate music on this day, coordinated annually with the summer solstice.
 |
Make Music Denver, 6/21/2013. Mainstage overlooking Glenarm St. at 5pm with no audience. DDP's decision to drop Make Music Denver Day is self-evident.
| For the past two years, a parallel event called Make Music Denver was sponsored by the Downtown Denver Partnership and has paid the musicians nothing, while asking the musicians to sign a contract that doesn't even allow the musicians to accept tips or payment. The purpose of the meeting is to explore how to change this dynamic, including the possibility of producing our own Make Music Denver day that properly respects the musicians.
We hope this will be the first in a series of meetings. The meetings are open to everyone: union, non-union, musicians, artists, concerned citizens and supporters of the arts. The DMA is located at 1165 Delaware, Denver, CO 80204. There is free parking in the rear of the building and on the street. We will meet in the large rehearsal room in the basement. Feel free to call or email us with questions and concerns. Hope to see you there!

Colorado Springs Philharmonic conductor Lawrence Leighton Smith dead at 77
|
 | 2003 photo by Jerilee Bennett |
By Jen Mulson Published: October 25, 2013 One of Colorado Springs Philharmonic's beloved conductors put down his final baton on Friday. Lawrence Leighton Smith, music director since 2002, died under hospice care from complications due to Binswanger's Disease, a form of dementia. He was 77 years old. "It's part of my journey," Smith said in an interview with The Gazette's T.D. Mobley-Martinez in 2011. "Thank God there's no pain. ... I know what's going to happen (with the disease). I say, bring it on." Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9" was his last performance with the orchestra in April 2011. The 2010-2011 season was his 11th in Colorado Springs. He joined the orchestra in 2002, when it was known as the Colorado Springs Symphony. In 2003, the orchestra filed for bankruptcy. Smith made waves during that tumultuous time. Read On |

Taking the Pulse in 2013: Artists and Health Insurance survey results
| Future of Music Coalition Kristin Thomson and Jean Cook Tuesday, October 15, 2013 In July and August 2013, Future of Music Coalition (FMC) and the Artists' Health Insurance Resource Center (AHRIC) conducted an online survey of US-based artists about their access to health insurance. The survey found that, of the 3,402 artist respondents, 43 percent do not currently have health insurance. This is more than double the national estimate of 18 percent uninsured (ages 0-64), as calculated by the Kaiser Family Foundation.[1] Of those respondents who do have health insurance (N=1927), 39 percent said they are paying for coverage themselves. This is over six times greater than the estimated 6 percent of the general population that pays for private, non-group insurance, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.[2] Of uninsured respondents, the vast majority - 88% - say that the primary reason that they don't have insurance is that they can't afford it. Chicago Symphony reports small deficit, record ticket sales and fundraising
| October 24, 2013 John von Rhein Chicago Tribune While other U.S. symphony orchestras are buffeted by budget shortfalls, declining attendance, labor unrest and other problems, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra continues on a steady financial course. The orchestra's parent body, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, reported record-breaking fundraising for a third consecutive year, along with record ticket sales, in the financial statement for fiscal year 2013 released at its annual meeting late Wednesday afternoon. "The overall message is, we are a strong and healthy organization, both artistically and financially," CSO Association President Deborah F. Rutter said earlier in the day. Although operating revenues of $73.6 million were up more than 2 percent over the previous year, operating expenses totaled $73.8 million, resulting in an operating deficit of $169,000. The red ink was minor compared with the $1.3 million deficit the association reported in fiscal 2012, and the $927,000 deficit incurred in 2011. Read On

Actors Lindsey Pierce and Brian Landis Folkins will appear as Washington, Haydn, Therese Keller, Martha Washington, colonialists, King George, and Mozart, along with the CCP string quartet.

Keyboard/Organ player needed for NYE gig- Broomfield
|
Deja Blu is looking for a quick study who can cover a 4 hour New Year's Eve show. We are a variety dance band whose set list covers a wide range of genres of music. We would be concentrating primarily on 60's, 70's and 80's tunes with a dinner set included. We are a 6 piece band with male/female lead singers, so vocal ability is not necessary but it would be nice if you could lend backup harmonies. We rehearse in Arvada. We are looking for a well- seasoned musician who knows and has played the majority of tunes on our set list for the night. The ability to step right in with limited rehearsal time is crucial. This gig requires a double-rig and the ability to play horn parts. Please call or email Liz at 303-517-9852 or band@dejabluband.com

After 90 Days....??
|
By Rod Taylor, DMA Member This week, our Congress treated us all to a brand new gift. Kind of an expensive gift to be sure, but if they say it's a gift...well, if you can't trust your politicians to tell you the truth, who can you trust? It's kind of like the first time your Mom ever tried to get you to eat liver and onions and was still telling you how great it was as you and a mouthful of that liver were headed for the bathroom! The wonderfulness in all this, is that this little treat they gave us only cost 24 billion dollars and we, the taxpayers, get to pay for it! Was it Andy Griffith that used to say, "folks it just don't get no better'n that!" This academy award winner had a little of everything, greed, lying, cheating, bullying, hypocrisy, avarice, racism and a whole bunch of other adjectives I can't think of at the moment. The greatest part of all is that, like it or not, we stand a real good chance of coming back and doing a repeat performance of this in ninety days. The scarier part of it all is that we just might be witnessing the beginnings of the fracturing and unwinding of our modern day political system.Read On

What is the Scott Walker Administration Wrong About Now?
|
8Comments
In what amounts to either a stunning misunderstanding about how the judicial system works in the United States or a calculated ploy to try to undermine a legitimate court ruling, labor relations officials in Gov. Scott Walker's (R) administration in Wisconsin attempted to limit a ruling that rebuffed Walker's attack on the collective bargaining rights of school district and municipal workers to only two cities. Officials at the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission (WERC) argued that Dane County Circuit Judge Juan Colas' 2012 ruling applied only to public workers in Milwaukee and teachers in Madison, since those were the original litigants.
Colas said "no" and held WERC in contempt of court for enforcing parts of the law that he previously found unconstitutional. After the previous ruling, Walker and his administration immediately sought to limit the scope of the judge's decision to Milwaukee and Madison and began enforcing it elsewhere. Colas has now issued an injunction against WERC, and hundreds of school district and municipal worker unions will be allowed to negotiate with their employers, something that had been forbidden in most cases under Walker's law.
Colas said, "I think this conduct was nothing more than an attempt to elude the application of a judgment the commissioners knew full well applied," reported Politico.

Small Business Owner Gives Employees Paid Sick Days.
|
World Doesn't End. New Jersey Doesn't Go Bankrupt
Jersey City business owner Steven Kalcanides, who runs Helen's Pizza, invited Mayor Steven Fulop to officially sign the city's new paid sick days ordinance at his restaurant. Kalcanides already has been offering his employees paid sick days and not only has he been able to continue making a profit, his turnover has been very low, with many of his workers staying with him for more than five years.
"As far as I know, it's been working for me," he says. "I don't see it as being the straw that breaks the camel's back on a business." Kalcanides says that the new law is how things should be done. "My business is like my family. Everybody that works for me is like family."
The new ordinance would allow employees at businesses with 10 or more employees to earn one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours they work, up to a maximum of 40 hours per year. The second largest city in New Jersey will join San Francisco; Seattle; Portland, Ore.; Washington, D.C.; and New York City in requiring paid sick days. The state of Connecticut also has a similar requirement. Fulop says the new measure would help bridge the gap between the city's various communities. "I really view this legislation as an important step in that direction." A similar measure was introduced into the state Assembly last spring.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
