Louisville Orchestra names new executive director
by Elizabeth Kramer
The Courier-Journal
October 11, 2013

The Louisville Orchestra announced Friday its new executive director will be Andrew Kipe, general manager of the Phoenix Symphony where he has worked since January 2011 to turn the orchestra around from a $2.5 million deficit with the support and cooperation from that orchestra's musicians.

Kipe, 40, will start his new job Nov. 11, taking over for interim chief executive David Hyslop, an orchestra industry consultant who has held the position since February when CEO Robert Birman resigned. The orchestra now has a $5.3 million budget

International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians (ICSOM)

October 1 was a difficult day for the musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra, a day that marked the one-year point of the managerial imposed lockout that has silenced an orchestra once called "the best in the world." That morning, their beloved Music Director, Osmo Vanska, delivered his resignation, precisely as he said he would if the lockout did not end. The relationship between Vanska and these musicians had begun to reach the status of legend; a unique pairing of leader and orchestra that had the potential to approach Szell and Cleveland, Ormandy and Philadelphia. So, on this dark morning the Locked Out Musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra did the only thing they knew how, and the only thing their years of dedicated study and training would allow them to do-they went out and served their community.

"You have about five minutes to show what you can do," explains David Halvorson, cello player and personnel manager, of the Philharmonic audition process. "It is difficult for anyone to understand who is not in the performing arts business. Music is deeply personal. We are looking for concert-artist level of playing."

Every year, hundreds of musicians compete for positions in orchestras throughout the country, and as is the case in searching for any job, the process can be exhausting and frustrating with the potential to negatively impact one's self-confidence and personal finances.

Englewood Arts Presents:  A New Mini-Series!
Date: Saturday, October 19, 2013
Time: 2:00 PM
Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)*

Hsing-ayHsu, Yumi Hwang-Williams, SilverAinomae
Englewood Arts Presents announces the appointment of Silver Ainomäe, CSO's principal cellist, as its new Artistic Director.  Silver will create a "mini-series" within the Chamber Music of the Masters Series, programing four of the eight concerts during the 2013-2014 season.  He shares some thoughts on his upcoming programs:

"The four concerts I have created for the Englewood Arts Presents' 2013-2014 season include several 'big hits' from the classical chamber music repertoire.  My goal is to present a wide variety of composers and also have ensembles of all varying sizes.

The mini-series opens on October 19, 2013.  The first program includes the Debussy Cello Sonata, Arvo Pärt's 'Mozart-Adagio,' a one-movement quartet (Quartett-Satz D 703) by Schubert, and Brahms' Piano Quintet.  Once again I will have the pleasure to perform together with CSO concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and pianist Hsing-ay Hsu.  The group size will expand through the program when we will share the stage with Stirling Trent (violin) and Anne Ainomäe (viola).

Our second concert on January 18, 2014, will highlight the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  Three quintets will definitely have something for everyone!  The string quintet adds an additional viola (!) to a string quartet.  The horn quintet will feature the CSO's latest addition to the horn section, Kolio Plachkov.  And last but not least will be one of Mozart's greatest chamber music works, the clarinet quintet, showcasing the CSO's fabulous new principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer.

October 28th and 29th

Four Mile Historic Park hosts the Colorado Chamber Players

The Colorado Chamber Players is thrilled to present an exciting music, theatre and history performance at Four Mile Historic Park in October 2013. Revolutionary Times: Haydn and Washington is a wonderfully zany program about the Colonial Era, George Washington, fiddle tunes, and string quartet music of Franz Josef Haydn. Washington and Haydn were born in the same year (1732), lived on different continents, but shared many things in common.

CCP musicians perform alongside two actors with an original script by Josh Hartwell of Buntport Theatre, and are facilitated by Four Mile Historic Park staff. Actors Lindsey Pierce and Brian Landis Folkins will appear as Washington, Haydn, Therese Keller, Martha Washington, colonialists, King George, and Mozart, along with the CCP string quartet.

This unique educational program will occur on two days only, onsite at Four Mile Historic Park in Denver:

Peabody, Patriot Settle with UMWA on Retiree Health Care
UMWA photo

After nearly a year of protests, rallies, marches and court battles demanding "Fairness at Patriot," a settlement has been reached that will help cover future health care benefits for the retired coal miners affected by the bankruptcy of Patriot Coal.

The Mine Workers (UMWA) yesterday announced that it had reached a global settlement with Peabody Energy and Patriot that will provide more than $400 million to fund retiree health care costs through the Patriot Retirees Voluntary Employee Benefit Association (VEBA). Peabody will pay $310 million over four years while Patriot will provide the remainder through payments and production-based royalties.

Steppin' for Justice at Walmart

During last month's national day of action calling on Walmart to reinstate workers who say they were fired or disciplined for standing up for their rights to form a union and demanding justice and a decent wage, a group of North Carolina workers got their message out to Walmart managers and shoppers at a Raleigh store location in a unique action.

After presenting their 170,000-signature petition for justice to store managers, a flash mob of "Steppers" from the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1208 materialized for a rhythmic reinforcement of the message. Click on the image below to watch the video.

You'll Never Guess What's in the Latest Republican Ransom Note

A letter from 51 Republican House members to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) makes Social Security cuts the latest ransom demand of the Republican hostage-takers in Congress. This may be unwelcome news to the many tea party Republicans who depend on Social Security benefits.

The letter, signed by 51 Republican lawmakers, says that "Social Security provides us the best opportunity to begin solving our nation's significant budget imbalances" and that "the ongoing fiscal discussions in Congress provide an opportunity to address entitlement program deficits...with our limited time frame to take action before we run up against fiscal deadlines."

In other words, let's use Social Security to reduce the deficit, and let's use this manufactured budget crisis to get our way.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
