Conductor Osmo Vänskä quits Minnesota Orchestra
|
by Claude Peck Minneapolis Star Tribune October 1, 2013 The Finnish-born conductor ends a 10-year run that brought the orchestra to new heights, nationally and internationally. Osmo Vänskä, music director of the Minnesota Orchestra since 2003, has resigned, effective immediately. "It is a very sad day for me," Vänskä said in a statement. His departure is a major blow to the 110-year old orchestra, which has been locked in a bitter and intractable labor lockout for more than a year. Vänskä's current contract extends to September, 2015. The resignation of the Finnish maestro was not unexpected - Vänskä had said last spring that he would quit if planned Carnegie Hall concerts were canceled because of the labor strife - but it fell like a bomb on the beleaguered orchestra that so far has been unable to negotiate a settlement that would return concert music to Minneapolis.

The Who's concept album Tommy was the first of what became known as the Rock Opera genre. Released in 1969 it has sold over 20 million copies to date and has been made into a movie and a live musical. The original record contained four hit singles, most notably 'Pinball Wizard.' In 1998 Tommy was inducted into the Grammy® Hall of fame for its 'historical, artistic and significant' value to rock music. This is your chance to experience this album as it was meant to be.

Wicked good! This concert of diva showstoppers is highlighted by selections from the Tony Award-winning musical Wicked. Featuring Nicole Parker (MadTV, Wicked on Broadway) and Emily Rozek (Glinda-Wicked on Broadway, Sunset Boulevard and South Pacific national tours), this program will showcase the breadth of their high-flying talents. In addition to "Popular" songs from the "untold tale of the witches of Oz," the program also includes favorites from Gypsy, Ragtime, Titanic and opera selections from George Bizet's Carmen.
This program highlights nostalgic American music and features Copland's "Appalachian Spring," as originally composed for a 13 member chamber orchestra. This original orchestration features several movements that do not appear in the orchestra suite or ballet as variations on the Shaker melody "Simple Gifts."

This 12th concert season will continue to showcase Colorado Symphony musicians and other area professional musicians in performances of smaller ensemble chamber music repertoire in the warmth and intimacy of Hampden Hall at the Englewood Civic Center. The opening concert will be a benefit for the UP CLOSE AND MUSICAL (UCAM) ensemble, a local non-profit that raises funds to provide free concerts to local area elementary school children. It was founded by and continues to be under the leadership of Eric Bertoluzzi. Performers are primarily musicians from the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO). Eric, a 40+ year member of the CSO until his retirement earlier this year, continues to be passionate about bringing the joy of music to the many children throughout the Denver area who may not otherwise enjoy such an opportunity. This opening concert will be performed in honor and memory of Penny and Joe Shoemaker. Penny and Joe were co-founders of the Helen Marie Black Music Education Fund, dedicated to engaging young people throughout the Metro Denver area in the world of music, both performance and education. This fund has provided annual financial support to UCAM for well over a decade until Penny's passing, at which time its endowment was transferred to UCAM to allow its mission to continue and expand. The program will include Aaron Copland's 'Appalachian Spring' (chamber version) performed by the UCAM ensemble under the direction of Eric Bertoluzzi. Also on the program will be George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' performed by the Shoemakers' talented son, pianist Jeff Shoemaker. Joe Anderies Quintet featuring International trumpeter Shunzo Ohno, 10/11
|
Friday Oct 11th, Dazzle Jazz 930 Lincoln
Two shows at 7 and 9 pm, advanced tickets recommended
International trumpeter Shunzo Ohno will be joining my Quintet at Dazzle Jazz for two shows 7 and 9 pm On October 11th. Shunzo has played with many greats from Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock, Larry Coryell, Buster Williams to Wayne Shorter and Art Blakey. His story and experience has been the subject of two documentaries in Japan: "Trumpet of Hope" and "Trumpet of Glory". He had to relearn the trumpet after a debilitating car accident in 1988 severely damaged his lip. Then in 1996 he weathered three years of surgery, radiation and hospitalization to overcome stage three throat cancer. This time he spent several years traveling the world to study with top trumpet teachers as he had to completely relearn the trumpet due to muscles he lost in the surgery. His playing is more amazing than ever and his experience shines through the horn. Call Dazzle at 303-839-5100 or use the link for tickets and reservations. I am also very excited to be bringing my son Trevor, a great jazz drummer in LA, back to join us for this once in a lifetime performance!

Englewood Arts Presents: A New Mini-Series!
Date: Saturday, October 19, 2013
Time: 2:00 PM
Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)*
 | Hsing-ayHsu, Yumi Hwang-Williams, SilverAinomae |
Englewood Arts Presents announces the appointment of Silver Ainomäe, CSO's principal cellist, as its new Artistic Director. Silver will create a "mini-series" within the Chamber Music of the Masters Series, programing four of the eight concerts during the 2013-2014 season. He shares some thoughts on his upcoming programs:
"The four concerts I have created for the Englewood Arts Presents' 2013-2014 season include several 'big hits' from the classical chamber music repertoire. My goal is to present a wide variety of composers and also have ensembles of all varying sizes.
The mini-series opens on October 19, 2013. The first program includes the Debussy Cello Sonata, Arvo Pärt's 'Mozart-Adagio,' a one-movement quartet (Quartett-Satz D 703) by Schubert, and Brahms' Piano Quintet. Once again I will have the pleasure to perform together with CSO concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and pianist Hsing-ay Hsu. The group size will expand through the program when we will share the stage with Stirling Trent (violin) and Anne Ainomäe (viola).
Our second concert on January 18, 2014, will highlight the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Three quintets will definitely have something for everyone! The string quintet adds an additional viola (!) to a string quartet. The horn quintet will feature the CSO's latest addition to the horn section, Kolio Plachkov. And last but not least will be one of Mozart's greatest chamber music works, the clarinet quintet, showcasing the CSO's fabulous new principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer.

This Land is Your Land
| By Rod Taylor, DMA Member
"This land is your land This land is my land From California to the New York island; From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters This land was made for you and Me." Those lyrics were written by a man named Woody Guthrie 73 years ago. Considering the political chaos our country is currently enduring, they were never more important and prophetic than they are today! Woodrow Wilson Guthrie was born in Okemah Oklahoma, in July of 1912. Little did he know that what he wrote about as a young man would be lessons it seems we all still need to take time to learn and possibly relearn. Indeed, I think if Guthrie was still around and forced to listen to the political bilge du jour coming out of Washington DC over immigration reform, headstart programs for kids, huge cuts in food stamp programs for the poor while giving tax cuts to the wealthy, he might have rewritten the closer line to his tune and dedicated it to the socially privileged so that it goes............ "This Land was made for me not You!" Read On

Trumka Says Shutting Down the Government to Prove a Point is a 'Temper Tantrum Worthy of a 4-Year-Old'
|
 | Richard Trumka |
9/30/2013 Jackie Tortora A looming federal government shutdown is slated to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka released the following statement on the House Republicans' hostage taking: As of today, it is clear that the Republican Party and the Tea Party have become one and the same when it comes to federal fiscal policy. House Republicans have decided that they will shut down critical public services, stiff public servants, hold America's credit rating hostage and kill off jobs because they are upset that President Obama decisively defeated Mitt Romney last November. That some Republicans are participating in this fiasco against their better judgment does not obscure their responsibility. All responsible voices must speak and act against policy making by hostage taking.

BREAKING: Govt Shuts Down the Arts
|
October is National Arts and Humanities Month and how does the federal government celebrate? By closing the doors of federally funded museums, parks, zoos and delaying the distribution of NEA grants that enrich our communities.

Today is only a snapshot of what the 49% cut to the NEA could mean for our communities. As arts advocates, we cannot stand by and let this happen! In response, the Arts Action Fund is extending our petition to deliver even more names to Congress. This means we need YOU to take a stand and tell Congress that these drastic cuts are unacceptable.
Will you add your name to our petition?
You have until October 31st to sign this petition and tell your friends to sign as well. The Arts Action Fund has a goal of adding 10,000 new signers by the end of this month to keep the pressure mounting on Congress to not only oppose the 49% cut, but make sure it gets the funding it deserves for 2014.
Please consider adding your name now. We need you!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
