99th Annual UMWA Ludlow Memorial Service
| 99th Annual United Mine Workers of America LUDLOW MEMORIAL SERVICE September 22, 2013 - 11:00 AM The 99th Annual Ludlow Memorial Service was held on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Ludlow Memorial site in Southern Colorado. This annual service by the United Mine Workers (UMWA) honors the miners who struck on Sept. 23, 1913 and the miners and families who lost their lives during the Ludlow Massacre of April 20, 1914. The Ludlow Massacre was a watershed moment in American labor history, the culminating act of perhaps the most violent struggle between corporate power and laboring men in American history. The House Committee on Mines and Mining reported in 1915, that Ludlow was influential in promoting child labor laws and an 8-hour work day. The Ludlow Tent Colony Site was designated a National Historical Landmark in 2009.
The Denver Municipal Band Brass Ensemble performed as part of the Memorial Service. The keynote speaker was Dan Kane, Secretary-Treasurer of UMWA. Other speakers included Zeese Papanikalos, Author of Buried Unsung, Mary Petrucci and Mary Rose, Daughter and Niece of Frank Petrucci, who's father, Thomas Petrucci, was a Ludlow Miner, Richard Bonacquista, Grandson of Ambrogio Bonacquista, a Ludlow Miner, as well as Mike Dalpiaz, Vice President, UMWA District 22, Professor Dean Siatta, University of Denver, Dawn DiPrince, Chairperson of the Ludlow Centennial Commission, Leroy Garcia, State Representative District 46 (Pueblo), Buffy McFayden, Pueblo County Commissioner, and others. The UMWA erected a granite monument in memory of the miners and their families who died that day. The inscription on the monument reads: "In Memory of the Men, Women and Children Who Lost Their Lives in Freedom's Cause at Ludlow, Colorado, April 20, 1914". Stand with us at the grave site of the dead and call down a blessing on the Mine Workers Union, as a symbol of our collective will and spirit, our collective struggle to created a world of justice. The Ludlow Massacre Memorial is located 12 miles North of Trinidad at Exit 27 off of Interstate I-25. For more information contact. Bob Butero 303-425-7110

Top signs you should not be on an orchestra's board of directors
| By Robert Niles theviolinist.com
September 18, 2013 at 7:50 PM Put the successes of the Los Angeles Philharmonic next to the failures of the Minnesota Orchestra, and one thing seems clear: a successful orchestra requires a board with the right attitude. That is, thoughtful and resourceful people who understand - and love - the art of symphonic music.
Unfortunately, people sometimes join an orchestra board for the wrong reasons, and the result can be nothing less than the death of your local orchestra. Thus, we've compiled a list. We'd laugh, if we could stop crying: Signs you should NOT be on an orchestra board of directors Read On

Colorado Floods - Contribute to Weld County School District 6
|
Editor's note: The following announcement is from John Evans Middle School in Greeley, CO, which is just one of many Northern Colorado schools and school districts affected by last week's floods.
Our hearts go out to our many families who have lost their homes and their possessions. We are so thankful that no lives were lost in this horrific tragedy.
We are continuing to work with our students who have displaced by the flood, getting them to school, providing uniforms and other clothing, providing counseling services and a return to as normal a routine as possible. We are so happy to have you all back in school!
Many of you have generously called and offered help. We are very grateful to so many in the community who have rallied to assist displaced families. If you want to help our students directly, we are accepting donations of new socks, shoes and underwear - for children ages 4-18 - at our Welcome Center in the Administration Building, 1025 9th Avenue. These will be distributed to our students immediately.
We can also accept cash donations, either at the Welcome Center or through any of the school or District 6 website. This money will be used to buy clothing, especially uniforms, and supplies for our displaced students. We also urge you to support the many agencies that are assisting with the effort to help homeless families.
Many churches and organizations have been collecting other items. The Weld County Food Bank is collecting food for the flood victims, many of whom have students in District 6. And, of course, the United Way of Weld County is offering many services to flood victims. The Community Foundation Serving Greeley and Weld County is also collecting donations earmarked for flood victims.
If you know someone who needs services, the best way to help is to refer them to the 2-1-1 line operated through United Way. They will help direct residents to the services they need. Also, if you would like to volunteer to help, call the same 2-1-1 number and they will direct you to the agencies that need you most. Again, thank you all for your generous support of our schools. We are ready to get back to the task of educating your children, which we do every day with great joy!

JULIO MAZZIOTTI
A masterful, strong and powerful pianist, Julio's original compositions will energize you and stir your most passionate emotions. A nattive of Mendoza, Argentina, Julio performs in concert worldwide to fascinated and adoring audiences. The distinctively Latin influence of Tango rhythms from his native land, and the intense emotions of his Italian heritage will entice you to join him in another culture. A Julio Mazziotti concert is an exciting rich and memorable experience not to be missed!
BOB BAKER
Bob will thrill you with his natural feel for a variety of different musical genres influenced by his early classical training, rock, jazz and gospel. His easy connection with audiences creates a rapport with his music that is at once familiar, but quite uniquely his own. Bob's Asian/Irish multi-racial background influences his distinctively diverse musical style as well as his own special perception of culture and connection.
His music has evolved from early classical training to rock, jazz and now gospel. His first solo album, "I Need You Lord," was recorded at Bernie Becker's (engineer for Neil Diamond) studio in LA. The musical inspiration for Bob's music can come from a note, a theme, or a melody that seems to be playing in his head-sometimes even while listening to other music.

|
Friday Oct 11th, Dazzle Jazz 930 Lincoln
Two shows at 7 and 9 pm, advanced tickets recommended
International trumpeter Shunzo Ohno will be joining my Quintet at Dazzle Jazz for two shows 7 and 9 pm On October 11th. Shunzo has played with many greats from Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock, Larry Coryell, Buster Williams to Wayne Shorter and Art Blakey. His story and experience has been the subject of two documentaries in Japan: "Trumpet of Hope" and "Trumpet of Glory". He had to relearn the trumpet after a debilitating car accident in 1988 severely damaged his lip. Then in 1996 he weathered three years of surgery, radiation and hospitalization to overcome stage three throat cancer. This time he spent several years traveling the world to study with top trumpet teachers as he had to completely relearn the trumpet due to muscles he lost in the surgery. His playing is more amazing than ever and his experience shines through the horn. Call Dazzle at 303-839-5100 or use the link for tickets and reservations. I am also very excited to be bringing my son Trevor, a great jazz drummer in LA, back to join us for this once in a lifetime performance!

Volkswagen and the UAW: Will Republicans still 'get government out of the way'?
|
by Dante Atkins |
The UAW is using a new paradigm to make inroads in the South
|
for Daily Kos
Sept 14, 2013
The UAW is using a new paradigm to make inroads in the South
It's a common refrain among conservative economists and politicians: If only government would end its interference in the affairs of private enterprise, the efficiencies of the free market would buoy the economy, lead to high profits, and in turn result in higher wages for everyone. This argument is used to defend corporate-friendly policies of all stripes, including deregulation, opposition to living wages, and worker safety protections.
While conservative governments have strong objections to imposing rules and regulations on employers, however, they have no problem setting stringent rules and regulations on the labor unions that seek to represent the interests of workers. The most usual imposition of regulations on labor comes in the form of so-called "right-to-work" laws, which forbid labor unions from requiring dues from the workers they represent. Ultimately, the objective of these laws is to defund unions by allowing represented employees to get away with being "free riders"-thus weakening their position across the bargaining table as well as making it harder for labor to compete in the political marketplace of ideas.

Home Care Workers Win wage and Overtime Protection

09/17/2013
Mike Hall
Nearly 2 million home care workers-the vast majority of whom are women-take care of the elderly and people with disabilities, often working 12-hour days and 60 to 70 hours a week. Now, for the first time since 1975, most of these workers will have the wage and overtime protection of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) under a new rule issued today by the Obama administration's Department of Labor.

Meanwhile, the Washington, D.C., City Council is exploring strengthening the district's paid sick leave law. The group Healthy Tacoma says that two out of five of the city's workers-about 40,000- don't have access to paid time off for an illness or if a family member gets sick. Nationally more than four in 10 private-sector workers and 81% of low-wage workers do not have paid sick days. Says the group: Read On

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
