New York City Opera May Cancel Most of This Season
|
By MICHAEL COOPER September 8, 2013 NY Times New York City Opera, which was founded 70 years ago to bring opera to the masses, will be forced to cancel most of its current season and all of its next season if it fails to raise $20 million by year's end, company officials say. The cash crisis that City Opera is trying to overcome threatens the very survival of a company that has made opera accessible and cultivated important singers over the years, including Beverly Sills, Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming. And it raises the question of whether New York will again be able to count itself among cultural capitals like Berlin and London that can support more than one major opera company.

 | Robert Levine |
By Robert Levine polyphonic.org September 5, 2013
The Minnesota Orchestra leadership released a "financial review" yesterday. Most of the coverage, though, focused on remarks made by MO board negotiating chair Richard Davis, who told the Star Tribune editorial board that he was prepared to say bye-bye to music director Osmo Vänskä, the upcoming Carnegie concerts, and the opening of the newly-renovated Orchestra Hall - "all three may have to fall," in his words.
But the report itself escaped scrutiny, which was unfortunate. The folks writing the web link to the Star Tribune article certainly didn't look very carefully, missing even the fact that the review was not "independent" - which was a claim that Graydon Royce, who actually wrote the article, was careful never to make. One senses a large thumb on the scale by Star Tribune management.
It's not often that scrutiny reveals anything about the cover page. This one, however, is dated June 10, 2013 - odd, considering that it was released yesterday. Why the delay? Are the same PR consultants who suggested in 2011 how big a deficit to report still on the payroll?

The Complete Works of Chopin, for Everybody, for Free
|
A new Kickstarter project aims to liberate the composer's music from its copyright confines. Rebecca J. Rosen The Atlantic Sep 9 2013
Frédéric Chopin (Wikimedia Commons)Frédéric Chopin passed away more than 160 years ago -- sufficiently long ago that today all of his compositions belong to the public domain. Yet, despite this, if you wanted to make a movie with Chopin's Nocturne in C-Sharp minor playing in the background, chances are you'd have to pay royalties to do so. Why is that? The reason points to a little wrinkle in the public domain, one that commonly plagues classical works: While the music is technically in the public domain (and you are free to play it, perform it, record it however you like), recordings of these public-domain works tend to be copyrighted. (You can thank this little wrinkle for all the terrible "hold" music you've been subjected to over the years.) A Kickstarter project, "Set Chopin Free," aims to do exactly what its name suggests: Release Chopin recordings from their copyright cell.

New conductor strikes sour note

glish.no/2013/08/30/new-conductor-strikes-sour-note/. | Vasily Petrenko Photo by Mark McNulty/Oslo Philharmonic |
UPDATED: Vasily Petrenko won rave reviews this week after conducting his first season openers of the Oslo Philharmonic, but he also caused offense off stage. Fellow female conductors say they were "shocked" when the charismatic young Russian told Oslo newspaper Aftenposten that orchestras "react better" when the conductor is a
man.
Petrenko, age 37, added that "when women get a family, it becomes difficult to be as dedicated as the branch demands." He has a wife and young son himself, but apparently doesn't feel that's a hindrance to him, only to women.Read On

Introducing Conrad Tao, the only classical musician on the Forbes' 2011 "30 under 30" list of people changing the world. This program features a delightful tour of the piano concerto form and its development from Mozart's works, which he played himself, through the modern works of Gershwin and Tao. In January of 2012, Conrad's performance with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was hailed by the Detroit News as "a blazing debut...a performance no less seductive in its lyrical beauty than hair-raising in its technical brilliance."
Please join us after the performance for a "talk back" with Scott O'Neil and Conrad Tao.

Inside the Orchestra, 9/21
|
Tiny Tots at Boettcher Concert Hall
For the first time ever, Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra will be performed at Boettcher Concert Hall on a Saturday, giving parents the opportunity to bring their children outside the work week to the famed Colorado concert hall. Designed to bring orchestra music to underserved communities, Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra is the only music education program of its kind in the country and depends heavily on grants and donations. The cost of admission is a suggested ticket price of $7.50 per person. (Complimentary admission will be offered to those in need and for toddlers yionger than 1.) Performances do sell out, so it is encouraged to purchase admissions promptly. There will be two performances at the Boettcher Concert Hall on Sept. 21, at 9:30am and 10:30am. A 45-minute performance, Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra engages, entertains and educates pre-school children six and under (but all ages are welcome). ISO's adult professional orchestra surrounds the audience as they hear well-known repertoire ranging from "Looney Tunes" to "Star Wars" to Beethoven. Children and their parents are creatively engaged in theatre-of-the-mind activities as they stomp like giants and throw a temper tantrum during Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, grow with music from "2001: A Space Odyssey" and ride into the sunset with the "William Tell Overture." And, back by popular demand, live opera music will be sung in alternating performances by local Central City Opera Ensemble Artists, Chad Reagan and Adam Ewing. |

The Global Piano Experience Tour 2013
 | Lisa Downing |
LISA DOWNING
Lisa is a multiple award winning, international composer, concert and recording artist who is re-defining the genre of solo piano. As she plays her heartfelt and technically impressive original compositions, your soul will be touched, your memories revived and your deepest thoughts can be heard as you listen to Lisa expressing shared human experiences through the piano.
Lisa performs all over the world with Grammy Award winning musicians such as Liz Story, David Lanz, Suzanne Ciani, and Peter Kater, to name a few. From the majestic Cap Vermell Cultural Center for the "First International Pianists of the World" tour in Mallorca, Spain to the historic Teatro Independencia in Mendoza, Argentina and right here in the United States, Lisa's audiences are entranced by the intense music that describes our lives!
JULIO MAZZIOTTI
A masterful, strong and powerful pianist, Julio's original compositions will energize you and stir your most passionate emotions. A nattive of Mendoza, Argentina, Julio performs in concert worldwide to fascinated and adoring audiences. The distinctively Latin influence of Tango rhythms from his native land, and the intense emotions of his Italian heritage will entice you to join him in another culture. A Julio Mazziotti concert is an exciting rich and memorable experience not to be missed!
BOB BAKER
Bob will thrill you with his natural feel for a variety of different musical genres influenced by his early classical training, rock, jazz and gospel. His easy connection with audiences creates a rapport with his music that is at once familiar, but quite uniquely his own. Bob's Asian/Irish multi-racial background influences his distinctively diverse musical style as well as his own special perception of culture and connection.
His music has evolved from early classical training to rock, jazz and now gospel. His first solo album, "I Need You Lord," was recorded at Bernie Becker's (engineer for Neil Diamond) studio in LA. The musical inspiration for Bob's music can come from a note, a theme, or a melody that seems to be playing in his head-sometimes even while listening to other music.

This 12th concert season will continue to showcase Colorado Symphony musicians and other area professional musicians in performances of smaller ensemble chamber music repertoire in the warmth and intimacy of Hampden Hall at the Englewood Civic Center. The opening concert will be a benefit for the UP CLOSE AND MUSICAL (UCAM) ensemble, a local non-profit that raises funds to provide free concerts to local area elementary school children. It was founded by and continues to be under the leadership of Eric Bertoluzzi. Performers are primarily musicians from the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO). Eric, a 40+ year member of the CSO until his retirement earlier this year, continues to be passionate about bringing the joy of music to the many children throughout the Denver area who may not otherwise enjoy such an opportunity. This opening concert will be performed in honor and memory of Penny and Joe Shoemaker. Friday Oct 11th, Dazzle Jazz 930 Lincoln
Two shows at 7 and 9 pm, advanced tickets recommended
International trumpeter Shunzo Ohno will be joining my Quintet at Dazzle Jazz for two shows 7 and 9 pm On October 11th. Shunzo has played with many greats from Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock, Larry Coryell, Buster Williams to Wayne Shorter and Art Blakey. His story and experience has been the subject of two documentaries in Japan: "Trumpet of Hope" and "Trumpet of Glory". He had to relearn the trumpet after a debilitating car accident in 1988 severely damaged his lip. Then in 1996 he weathered three years of surgery, radiation and hospitalization to overcome stage three throat cancer. This time he spent several years traveling the world to study with top trumpet teachers as he had to completely relearn the trumpet due to muscles he lost in the surgery. His playing is more amazing than ever and his experience shines through the horn. Call Dazzle at 303-839-5100 or use the link for tickets and reservations. I am also very excited to be bringing my son Trevor, a great jazz drummer in LA, back to join us for this once in a lifetime performance!

The Recording Academy is coming to Denver, 9/17-18
|
My name is Analisa Lono, and I am the Membership Manager at The Recording Academy San Francisco. The Recording Academy is best known for The GRAMMY Awards show, but we are also the music community's leading membership organization. We offer professional development, networking and advocacy programs for our 20,000 members, who span all areas of the music industry from well-known artists to record executives and engineers.
As a member of the greater Denver / Boulder recording community, The Recording Academy® San Francisco Chapter would like to invite you and the DMA members to participate in two exciting upcoming events this September: In The Mix: Colorado and P&E Wing Listening Event at Airshow Mastering.
On Tuesday September 17, San Francisco Chapter Board President, Michael Romanowski, will host a P&E Listening Event at Airshow Mastering in Boulder. During this intimate event, local producers and engineers will play tracks they are working on to discuss with their peers. This event will provide an opportunity to network with other members as well as the chance to learn more about The Recording Academy and our Producers & Engineers Wing.
On Wednesday, September 18, we will host In The Mix: Colorado, a networking mixer for members and potential members of The Recording Academy. Feel free to bring a guest to this event as we discuss the benefits of membership, the GRAMMY Awards process and how The Recording Academy can help strengthen and support the Colorado music community. The Chair of the National Board of Trustees, Christine Albert, along with Chapter President, Michael Romanowski will be in attendance and available for questions or conversation. This event will feature hosted bar bites and a no-host bar. Please see FLYER for more details.

Walmart Misses Deadline for Justice, Workers Set for Big Actions
|
The growing group of Walmart workers across the country who are demanding justice and a decent wage gave the giant retailer a Labor Day deadline to meet their demands or face intensified and widespread actions.Walmart didn't, so starting Thursday Walmart workers will mount a wide wave of actions.
Since Walmart workers began speaking out last fall through strikes and other actions spotlighting Walmart's miserably low-wages, benefits, poor working conditions and, what they say is, abusive treatment by management, they've paid a price.
According to the worker group Our Walmart, 20 workers were allegedly fired and another more than 50 disciplined after they took part in a strike against the retail giant in June. Reinstatement of those workers and increased wages are the key demands.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
