The Colorado Symphony Orchestra strengthened its relationship with its conductor Tuesday, changing Andrew Litton's title from artistic adviser to music director.

Music director is the more traditional title for an orchestra's artistic leader and implies total control over all aspects of playing, from hiring musicians to selecting repertoire to overseeing performances.

Mystery of the Missing Music
Benjamin Britten's Lost Score for 'Les Sylphides'

SECAUCUS, N.J. - The quest for the lost Benjamin Britten score - an orchestration of Chopin piano music he made in 1941 for the ballet "Les Sylphides" - had moved to a warehouse here.

The searchers combed through the cavernous building, where American Ballet Theater's sets and boxed-up tutus hibernate between productions. A gryphon-headed boat from "The Sleeping Beauty" was rolled aside, revealing some old steamer trunks labeled "Agnes de Mille" and, perhaps less intriguingly, the minutes of long-concluded board meetings.

How an effort to popularize classical music undermines what makes orchestras great.

In late June, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra came within days of foreclosure on its concert hall, an imposing neoclassical structure that opened in 2006. Designed by a national architecture firm that specializes in faux-historical buildings, and costing $123.5 million, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, with its massive columns and impressive portico, was meant to give one of this country's finest regional orchestras cultural and civic gravitas.1 But in March, leaders of the institution decided that they could no longer afford the interest rates on a letter of credit, and effectively threatened to default on their mortgage. A confidential agreement, brokered by wealthy symphony supporters, saved the orchestra from homelessness, but the situation remains bleak. In recent years, the Nashville Symphony has been running deficits of $10 to $20 million a year, and a contract with the musicians is about to expire. If recent history is any guide, negotiations will be complex and rancorous.

BEETHOVEN Concerto No. 4, 2nd movement
SCHUMANN Concerto, 1st movement
RACHMANINOFF Concerto No. 3, 3rd movement
BRITTEN Concerto No. 1, 3rd and 4th movement

Introducing Conrad Tao, the only classical musician on the Forbes' 2011 "30 under 30" list of people changing the world. This program features a delightful tour of the piano concerto form and its development from Mozart's works, which he played himself, through the modern works of Gershwin and Tao. In January of 2012, Conrad's performance with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was hailed by the Detroit News as "a blazing debut...a performance no less seductive in its lyrical beauty than hair-raising in its technical brilliance."

Please join us after the performance for a "talk back" with Scott O'Neil and Conrad Tao.

A Toast to Tost: Haydn Quartets op. 54 and 50
Tuesday, September 10, 2013, 7:30 pm
Trinity Presbyterian Church, Arvada
7755 Vance Drive, Arvada, Colorado 80003
$15 General, $10 Seniors 62+ and Students

The Haydn Quartet Slam continues with Haydn's delightful Tost Quartets, including Haydn's masterful opus 54 quartets #2 and #3, plus the Frog Quartet.

Written for the virtuoso violinist and friend of Haydn's -Johann Tost- these op. 54 quartets feature florid and virtuosic writing for all four parts - truly a conversation between four musical voices.
Haydn's Frog Quartet op. 50 #6, is the last quartet of a set of six dedicated to King Friederick Wilhelm II of Prussia. The D Major quartet is the most light-hearted and jovial of the set.
The "frogs" make their appearance in the finale. The nickname comes from a string technique used in the movement called bariolage, which results in a frog-like sound.

To reserve tickets in advance, go to http://www.tpcarvada.org/welcome/concertSeries.jsp. You may also call 303-422-3656, x6000 for more information and directions. Click on 2nd Tuesdays at Trinity, and then plan to pay with check, credit card or cash at the door.

Inside the Orchestra, 9/21
Tiny Tots at Boettcher Concert Hall

Inside the Orchestra For the first time ever, Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra will be performed at Boettcher Concert Hall on a Saturday, giving parents the opportunity to bring their children outside the work week to the famed Colorado concert hall. Designed to bring orchestra music to underserved communities, Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra is the only music education program of its kind in the country and depends heavily on grants and donations. The cost of admission is a suggested ticket price of $7.50 per person. (Complimentary admission will be offered to those in need and for toddlers yionger than 1.) Performances do sell out, so it is encouraged to purchase admissions promptly. There will be two performances at the Boettcher Concert Hall on Sept. 21, at 9:30am and 10:30am.

A 45-minute performance, Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra engages, entertains and educates pre-school children six and under (but all ages are welcome). ISO's adult professional orchestra surrounds the audience as they hear well-known repertoire ranging from "Looney Tunes" to "Star Wars" to Beethoven. Children and their parents are creatively engaged in theatre-of-the-mind activities as they stomp like giants and throw a temper tantrum during Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, grow with music from "2001: A Space Odyssey" and ride into the sunset with the "William Tell Overture." And, back by popular demand, live opera music will be sung in alternating performances by local Central City Opera Ensemble Artists, Chad Reagan and Adam Ewing.

The Global Piano Experience Tour 2013
Lisa Downing
Lisa Downing

LISA DOWNING
Lisa is a multiple award winning, international composer, concert and recording artist who is re-defining the genre of solo piano.  As she plays her heartfelt and technically impressive original compositions, your soul will be touched, your memories revived and your deepest thoughts can be heard as you listen to Lisa expressing shared human experiences through the piano.

Lisa performs all over the world with Grammy Award winning musicians such as Liz Story, David Lanz, Suzanne Ciani, and Peter Kater, to name a few.  From the majestic Cap Vermell Cultural Center for the "First International Pianists of the World" tour in Mallorca, Spain to the historic Teatro Independencia in Mendoza, Argentina and right here in the United States, Lisa's audiences are entranced by the intense music that describes our lives!

JULIO MAZZIOTTI
A masterful, strong and powerful pianist,  Julio's original compositions will energize you and stir your most passionate emotions.  A nattive of Mendoza, Argentina, Julio performs in concert worldwide to fascinated and adoring audiences.  The distinctively Latin influence of Tango rhythms from his native land, and the intense emotions of his Italian heritage will entice you to join him in another culture.  A Julio Mazziotti concert is an exciting rich and memorable experience not to be missed!

BOB BAKER
Bob will thrill you with his natural feel for a variety of different musical genres influenced by his early classical training, rock, jazz and gospel.  His easy connection with audiences creates a rapport with his music that is at once familiar, but quite uniquely his own.  Bob's Asian/Irish multi-racial background influences his distinctively diverse musical style as well as his own special perception of culture and connection.

His music has evolved from early classical training to rock, jazz and now gospel.  His first solo album, "I Need You Lord," was recorded at Bernie Becker's (engineer for Neil Diamond) studio in LA.  The musical inspiration for Bob's music can come from a note, a theme, or a melody that seems to be playing in his head-sometimes even while listening to other music.

LABOR & POLITICS

Enjoy Labor Day. You work hard. You've earned it!
AFL-CIO NOW
August 30, 2013

AFL-CIO Union Yes Labor Day is a celebration of the incredible contributions of America's working people. Through sweat, sacrifice and innovation, workers built this country and make it run every day. But today, we're working longer hours, taking on multiple jobs and producing more goods and services. Yet wages have flatlined, except for those at the very top.

Aspiring citizens, too, toil in the shadows to build a better life for their families but end up working in poor and unsafe conditions and too often fall into the hands of unscrupulous employers.

Everyone deserves a living wage and a safe workplace free of harassment and abuse. Everyone deserves a voice on the job. Everyone deserves a chance at a middle-class life through hard work.

This Labor Day, we need our nation to invest in good jobs and decent wages and to reform our broken immigration system to create a road map to citizenship for aspiring Americans. For union and nonunion workers; low wage, blue collar and white collar; documented and undocumented-this should be the country of opportunity.

You work hard every day. You've earned it.

Dancers sue strip club for failing to pay wages and taking tips
By Joey Bunch
The Denver Post
8/27/2013

A group of strippers at a Grand Junction club are seeking to force its owner to keep his hands off their tips and pay them wages, according to a class-action lawsuit. Their lawyer is encouraging more dancers to join the fight.

The dancers at Fantasy Gentlemen's Club aren't paid anything by club owner Kevin Eardley. Instead, they must pay the club to work there, said lawyer Mari Newman of the Denver firm of Killmer, Lane & Newman, which specializes in civil rights cases.

Dancers also are required to share their tips with the club's bouncers and DJs, as well as pay fines for behavior such as trading shifts with other dancers and for the misconduct of customers, Newman said.

"They're making their living off the backs of these employees," she said. "They're exploiting a vulnerable workforce, because most of these women have had no access to legal services to protect their rights."

Labor Day Endorsement of Senator Angela Giron
Unions Say Vote No on Recall: Rivera Rubber Stamp for
Koch Brothers Anti-Union Agenda

On a day dedicated to working men and women, unions asked their 12,567 union household voters in Pueblo County's Senate District 3 to unify behind Senator Angela Giron and VOTE NO on the irresponsible September 10th recall election.

"This is a clear choice between someone who stands up for working families and someone who supports stripping Pueblo union members of their collective bargaining rights. Angela Giron has been a champion for working families in Pueblo passing a tough new law to make sure our tax dollars support domestic manufacturing, like the steel made right here in Pueblo", said Doug Fennell of the United Steelworkers.

"Senator Giron has been a strong voice for southern Colorado's construction trades workers. She stood up for corrections officers so they received a long-needed pay increase and passed a tough new law that makes sure we hire 80% Coloradans on all state construction projects with good wages and benefits. She is a champion for real people who need to make ends meet," said Mike Cerbo, executive director of the Colorado AFL-CIO.

On the other hand, Cerbo pointed out, George Rivera is the candidate of choice of the Koch brothers, the same unscrupulous New York billionaires who spent millions to strip away collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. Workers should celebrate their rights this Labor Day by rejecting George Rivera and voting NO on the Recall.

Fast-Food Workers Set for Nationwide Strike

On Thursday, fast-food and other low-wage workers in more than three dozen cities will boost their campaign for a living wage and justice with a nationwide one-day strike. The workers and the faith, community and labor groups that back them are calling for a living wage of $15 an hour and the right to form a union without retaliation.

The mobilization began in November with a handful of walkouts and grew even larger in July. Steven Ashby, a professor at the University of Illinois School of Labor and Employment Relations, tells Time.com:

It's absolutely going to continue to grow. I see no signs from all the people I've talked with that it's going to falter. At this point, it hasn't reached its peak yet. The energy of the workers, their passion, their commitment, is very, very high. They basically feel like, 'We've got nothing to lose.'

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
