So Much For Good Faith Bargaining
By Drew McManus Adaptistration

August 22, 2013

The increasingly resourceful Emily E. Hogstad posted a fascinating expose on 8/21/2013 which reveals the Minnesota Orchestra Association (MOA) purchased 13 domain names associated with typical audience support efforts during labor disputes. The smoking gun here is according to WHOIS records, all of the domain names were registered for a period of two years on the purchase dates of 5/24/12 and 5/25/12.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, most folks won't be shocked to learn that the MOA was digging the proverbial trenches for a long term siege well in advance of talks officially breaking down. Simply put, it is a clear indication that the employer had little to no intention for negotiating in good faith.

2013 Compensation Reports: Executives
By Drew McManus

August 14, 2013

By the onset of the 2010/11 season, the field was amidst the beginning of the worst austerity driven labor disputes for the last half century. Collective bargaining agreements were being reopened in order to incorporate concessions designed to forestall financial collapse and when stakeholders were unable to reach mutually agreeable terms, vitriolic public disputes erupted, oft accompanied by prolonged work stoppages. Nonetheless, the average orchestra executive experienced a 5.32 percent increase in compensation.
2013-14 Wage Scales & Mileage Rates, eff. Sept 1
Since 1897, members of the Denver Musicians Association have established minimum rates for defined categories of work. These rates have become the recognized prevailing wage for musical services.

In addition of periodic adjustments, all scales are adjusted annually on September 1st in accordance with the Colorado Cost of Living Index (for contracts filed after September 1st. The COL increase applied to our 2013-14 Wage Scales is 2.1%.

Any disputes that arise over the terms of this Schedule of  Wages shall be adjudicated by the Denver Musicians Association Board of  Directors. Whenever feasible, the Board of Directors may negotiate an agreement  with prospective employers for contributions to the AFM-EP pension fund on DMA Logo behalf of the employed musicians.

Chamber Music Society Gears Up for Naumburg Bandshell

The Knights, at the Naumburg Bandshell this summer. The Chamber Music Society plays there on Wednesday.

Sunscreen? Check.

Bug spray? Check.

Sheet Music? Clothespins? Nope. Make mine an iPad.

Just a few weeks before entering its 45th season, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will present a concert on Wednesday that is a first in its history. Normally, its members are out of town at festivals across the country this time of year. But thanks to an invitation by the Naumburg Orchestra Concerts, the society will present a program of music by Mozart, Beethoven and Dvorak at the bandshell in Central Park. It will be its first out of doors.

And playing al fresco is no picnic.

To be sure, the dangers are not on a par with those faced by the cast of the recent "Magic Flute" production at the Bregenz Festival in Austria, where three singers took a dunking when their boat overturned in Lake Constance.

The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.

The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band,it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

The Story of the Piano Concerto

Scott O'Neil, resident conductor
Conrad Tao, piano

BACH Concerto No. 1, 1st movement
MOZART Concerto No. 9 "Jeunehomme," 1st movement
BEETHOVEN Concerto No. 4, 2nd movement
SCHUMANN Concerto, 1st movement
RACHMANINOFF Concerto No. 3, 3rd movement
BRITTEN Concerto No. 1, 3rd and 4th movement

Introducing Conrad Tao, the only classical musician on the Forbes' 2011 "30 under 30" list of people changing the world. This program features a delightful tour of the piano concerto form and its development from Mozart's works, which he played himself, through the modern works of Gershwin and Tao. In January of 2012, Conrad's performance with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was hailed by the Detroit News as "a blazing debut...a performance no less seductive in its lyrical beauty than hair-raising in its technical brilliance."

Please join us after the performance for a "talk back" with Scott O'Neil and Conrad Tao.

Lisa Downing, 9/25 & 9/27

The Global Piano Experience Tour 2013
Lisa Downing
Lisa Downing

LISA DOWNING
Lisa is a multiple award winning, international composer, concert and recording artist who is re-defining the genre of solo piano.  As she plays her heartfelt and technically impressive original compositions, your soul will be touched, your memories revived and your deepest thoughts can be heard as you listen to Lisa expressing shared human experiences through the piano.

Lisa performs all over the world with Grammy Award winning musicians such as Liz Story, David Lanz, Suzanne Ciani, and Peter Kater, to name a few.  From the majestic Cap Vermell Cultural Center for the "First International Pianists of the World" tour in Mallorca, Spain to the historic Teatro Independencia in Mendoza, Argentina and right here in the United States, Lisa's audiences are entranced by the intense music that describes our lives!

JULIO MAZZIOTTI
A masterful, strong and powerful pianist,  Julio's original compositions will energize you and stir your most passionate emotions.  A nattive of Mendoza, Argentina, Julio performs in concert worldwide to fascinated and adoring audiences.  The distinctively Latin influence of Tango rhythms from his native land, and the intense emotions of his Italian heritage will entice you to join him in another culture.  A Julio Mazziotti concert is an exciting rich and memorable experience not to be missed!

BOB BAKER
Bob will thrill you with his natural feel for a variety of different musical genres influenced by his early classical training, rock, jazz and gospel.  His easy connection with audiences creates a rapport with his music that is at once familiar, but quite uniquely his own.  Bob's Asian/Irish multi-racial background influences his distinctively diverse musical style as well as his own special perception of culture and connection.

His music has evolved from early classical training to rock, jazz and now gospel.  His first solo album, "I Need You Lord," was recorded at Bernie Becker's (engineer for Neil Diamond) studio in LA.  The musical inspiration for Bob's music can come from a note, a theme, or a melody that seems to be playing in his head-sometimes even while listening to other music.

Kochs Give Up Bid to Buy Los Angeles Times

Right-wing, extremist billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch have ended their pursuit of the Los Angeles Times and other Tribune Co. newspapers after months of protests by community groups, journalists and other free press advocates.

Art Pulaski, executive secretary-treasurer of the California Labor Federation, called the decision by the Kochs to abandon their efforts to buy the Tribune properties, "a major victory for proponents of a free and democratic press."

Walmart Should Look in Mirror for Declining Sales Cause

OUR Walmart Photo/Flickr

Walmart reported last week that sales at its U.S. stores had unexpectedly declined. Walmart tried to explain its shrinking sales away by citing outside factors such as higher gas prices and payroll taxes.

But, say many market observers, the real cause lies within Walmart itself-the largest private-sector employer in the United States and the poster child for low-wages.

Daniel Gross at The Daily Beast says, "This isn't complicated. Or, rather, it shouldn't be complicated." He writes:

By paying low wages, Walmart is effectively limiting the ability of a large chunk of the American workforce to consume. By setting a low benchmark, it encourages other employers to do the same. The sorts of people who make up Walmart's core shopping constituency are the sort of people who work there. Were they to earn more income, they'd surely spend more at stores-including Walmart. Since they don't, they don't.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
