George Duke, Keyboardist Who Crossed Genre Boundaries, Dies at 67
|
By WILLIAM YARDLEY Published: August 6, 2013
NY Times
 | Jean-Christophe Bott/Keystone, via Associated Pres |
George Duke, who began his career as a jazz pianist in the 1960s but made his name by crossing musical boundaries, died on Monday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 67.
He had suffered heart complications after being treated for chronic lymphocytic leukemia, said his manager, Darryl Porter, who confirmed the death.
The name of the instrument with which Mr. Duke is perhaps most closely associated also describes his approach to music: synthesizer. While he remained a respected figure in the jazz world, over the years he also played keyboards with Frank Zappa and Michael Jackson, sang lead on a Top 20 single and produced pop and rhythm-and-blues hits for others. His work has been sampled by hip-hop and electronic artists, including Daft Punk.
"I was in a rock band, I played with a bunch of Brazilians, I played R&B with Parliament-Funkadelic and all of that," he said in an interview before his most recent album, "DreamWeaver," was released last month. "I mean, I've done jazz with Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley. It's a goulash. It's a gumbo."
Mr. Duke, who as a small boy begged his mother to buy him a piano after she took him to see Duke Ellington, began playing professionally at a time when many musicians were interested in blending genres. He played in a trio that backed the singer Al Jarreau while he was still a teenager, then accompanied Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz musicians at clubs in San Francisco. By the early 1970s he had performed and recorded with Adderley, the jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and Zappa's Mothers of Invention. (His long stint with Zappa included an appearance, with the rest of the band, in the feature film "200 Motels.")
Read OnEditor's Note: DMA members join during this time of great loss with Denver musical legends Charlie Burrell and Purnell Steen who are close relatives of the late Charles Duke. Close family members also include Grammy- winning vocalist Dianne Reeves and the late sax player Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson.

Why Musicians Should Never Donate Their Talents
| Chris LeDrew on May 31, 2013 onstagemagazine.com
Perhaps the biggest way society hoodwinks and exploits musicians is booking them for a fundraiser. If you're a working musician, you've undoubtedly gotten this call: "Hi, it's Jane from the _________ Foundation. We were wondering if your band is able to play at our annual fundraiser next month at the _________ Lounge." Often musicians, typically filled with self-doubt about their value anyway, will readily agree to play the event out of a sheer sense of feeling wanted. And they should feel wanted. It's a valuable gift to have, and it has enriched their own lives in so many ways. They really should give back every now and then and contribute to worthwhile causes. Yes, all that gibberish has been beaten into musicians over the years by well-meaning non-musicians who haven't a damn clue. And seeing that we're a neurotic, insecure bunch anyway, we really believe this self-affirming baloney. Read On

Do you know what you are worth?
| DenverOriginalMusic.com August 12, 2013 If your goal is to become a professional musician, you need to do what every professional does: value your time and know what you are worth. Sometimes musicians get so caught up in the love of their music and the appreciation of any audience that these premises go right out the window. How much are you worth? Have you ever thought about how much you should be charging per hour for your services? This is a very straight-forward question. Doctors, lawyers, therapists, even plumbers and electricians know what they will be charging the public when services are rendered. Why should musicians be any different? Read On

|
The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.
The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band,it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Workers get more vacation time, but fewer paid sick days, than before
|
by Walter Hamiltom
LA Times
August 12, 2013
American workers get more vacation time today than they did two decades ago, but far fewer paid sick days, according to new government data.
The average full-time worker at a private company gets 10 days of vacation a year, up from eight days in 1993, according to the analysis by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That expands over time, with the average employee getting 14 vacation days after five years (compared with 13 days in 1993) and 20 days after 20 years (versus 18 days in 1993).
This is good news considering the widespread advice from researchers about the psychic and professional benefits of taking vacations.
However, the boost in paid vacations is being more than offset by a pronounced reduction in paid sick days off.
For the average full-timer who's been at his or her company for a year, paid sick time has dropped to eight days from 10 days in 1993, according to the BLS. That's the exact reverse of the increase in vacation.
And the gap between now and the past widens the longer a worker is at a company.

Happy Birthday Social Security! More Important Than Ever
|
Barbara J. Easterling, President, Alliance for retired Americans
Huffington Post
8/13/2013 8:39 pm
This week, we celebrate Social Security's 78th anniversary. There is a lot to celebrate! For nearly eight decades, Social Security has provided seniors with a secure retirement income and prevented retirees from falling into poverty. Social Security lifts over 21 million Americans out of poverty, including over 14 million seniors. It is doing just what it was designed to do.
I am reminded of the importance of Social Security every day as I hear stories from members about the role Social Security plays in their lives.
Leah Witherspoon from Dallas, Texas, for example, worked hard for decades, but she lost her job just a few years shy of retirement and lost her health insurance as a result. Leah struggled to get by until she became eligible for Social Security and Medicare. Now, Leah receives $1,684 a month from Social Security, which just enables her to pay for her healthcare costs and basic living expenses. Leah's situation is not uncommon -- almost half of unmarried older recipients depend upon Social Security for 90 percent or more of their income.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
