Classical musicians suffer for their art - literally
Torn rotator cuffs, hernias, hearing problems - it's a tough life for
musicians. Some play through the pain or seek treatment, but for others,
it's a career ender.

By Donna Perlmutter

August 2, 2013

So you think classical music is purely a rarefied pursuit, where what matter are creativity, spirit and soul? The musician's body does not agree.

Not midway through a high-powered symphony. Not sitting near the crashing cymbals in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Not during the long haul of Wagner's "Ring" cycle.

Take violinist David Harrington. He was in rehearsals with his adventurous Kronos Quartet, preparing to play the epic String Quartet No. 2 by Morton Feldman - it notoriously spans six hours without intermission. Just continuous playing through what seems like a universe of time.

"We'd already done eight performances of the piece, and this 1996 concert at Lincoln Center was to be our last outing with it," he said by phone from San Francisco.

But pains started shooting up and down his arm 40 minutes into rehearsal. They grew more and more alarming.

"Finally, after several hours of rehearsal, the pain was excruciating," he said. "We ended up canceling this last and most famous venue for the work."

House Committee Defers NEA Funding Decision Until September
August 1, 2013
League of American Orchestras

Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee held an impassioned first day of debate on an FY14 funding bill that would advance to the full House of Representatives, among other recommendations, a severe 49% cut to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The Interior bill faces an overall 19% reduction, and the proposal to disproportionately slash the NEA's budget currently remains in the bill despite an attempt by Representatives Nita Lowey (D-NY-17) and David Price (D-NC-4) to restore funding to the President's requested level of $154.5 million. The amendment was defeated by a party line vote of 19-27, and Committee leadership again referred to programs that are slated for elimination and reduction as "nice to do," rather than "must do" programs. The Committee's work on the hotly-debated funding bill is unfinished, and members will resume discussion and consideration of more amendments after returning from their August recess.

Denver Municipal Band Free Summer Concerts

Denver Municipal Band
The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.

The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band,it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Hi everyone, I am back from the Telluride Jazz Celebration where I played four performances as a member of the Telluride Jazz All Stars - great musicians, great audiences and great music. It is nice to be back in Denver and to be playing in our musical home "The Z" again -The Wazee Supper club where we play every Wednesday evening from 7 to 10. This week our very special guest artist is Ron Bland playing bass with the wonderfully great pianist and composer Dave Hanson playing keyboard, "Mr. energy with that big smile" Alejandro Castano playing drums, the master of the trombone Al hermann and myself on trumpet. We hope you can join us this Wednesday for our weekly jazz party at the "Z" and we thank all of the jazz fans who support us every week, you make our music possible and we love you for it.

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). Great food, great atmosphere and always a great night of big band music! Check our website (MetropolitanJazzOrchestra.org) for our calendar and to confirm each month's schedule.

A Rocket Scientist's Formula for Social Security

Rush Holt - Social Security
Rush Holt - Social Security

8/04/2013
Mike Hall

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come up with a formula to strengthen Social Security, says rocket scientist Rush Holt. Holt, who is also a U.S. House member from New Jersey and a candidate for the U.S. Senate, says we don't need to raise the retirement age or cut benefits, just lift the cap on the Social Security tax so millionaires and billionaires pay the same rate as working families. Take a look as he explains it in this video.

Fast Food Strikes Continue to Roll
8/02/2013
Mike Hall

Thousands and thousands of fast-food and other low-wage workers this week have walked off the job in a series of one-day strikes in cities across the country. They are demanding a living wage, no retaliation for striking and the right to join unions. Those strikes are continuing today and likely into next week too.

In Detroit, Claudette Wilson works two part-time jobs, one at Burger King, where she makes $7.40 an hour, and the other at Jep's Pizza. She told
MSNBC:

"A lot of times we've been understaffed, so I had to do multiple positions, long shifts, for the same amount of money [without overtime]. At 40 weeks in a year, that's supposed to be $15,000, right? Is that a lot of money to you? That's if you get 40 hours a week. Now a lot of people don't get 40 hours."

Workers Dying as Safety Rules Stall
8/01/2013
Mike Hall

AFL-CIO Health and Safety Director Peg Seminario told a U.S. Senate committee on Thursday that the current system for developing and issuing worker and workplace safety rules is:

"A broken and dysfunctional system, which is failing to protect workers and costing workers' lives.
But from 1981 to 2010, the average start-to-finish time for new safety rules is eight years."

Testifying before the Judiciary's Oversight, Federal Rights and Agency Actions Subcommittee, she said that during the first decade of  the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) existence (1970-1980), it took an average of one to three years for major rules to go from proposal to implementation, including rules on asbestos, cotton dust, lead and other hazards. That was under both Republican and Democrat administrations.

Walmart: Portrait of a Job Killer
8/06/2013
Mike Hall
Job Killer
Whenever communities, lawmakers or activists question or criticize Walmart for the way it treats workers-the low-pay, the stores' impact on the communities-the retail giant pulls out a well-worn script with a simple message, "Walmart creates jobs and if there's one thing this economy needs, it's more jobs."

Setting aside the quality of the jobs for another day, is Walmart telling the truth? Sure doesn't look like it, according to Salon's Kathleen Geier, who matches Walmart's claims against in-depth research from universities, economists, government studies and other sources. Here's what she finds:

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
