The Mikie Show header

Michael Carroll Denver musicians remember Michael Carroll as a composer/producer at Communi-Creations, which was one of Denver's preeminent studios in the 1980's. Michael now resides in Oracle, AZ and maintains his DMA membership to this day. Currently, he produces and hosts The Mikie Show - a half hour variety show on public radio in Austin and Indianapolis and worldwide online. Michael also creates the music for the show.

A native of New York, Michael Carroll received a degree in Engineering and then, sensibly, went straight into music. He studied music theory privately with Dale Bruning. He's spent most of the last 25 years in New York City writing original music for advertising and television (The Muppets, Oprah, e.g.) and has at least a dozen citations in New York's Museum of Television and Radio. He continues to write music and does other projects including interactive musical installations in parks and at art events. He was commissioned in 2008 to compose a children's ballet for the City of Yuma and the State of Arizona. He's just finished a book of music for solo piano.

New contract signals BSO's faith in Marin Alsop
Though budget troubles and contract negotiations loom, director has been a definite plus

Marin Alsop
Marin Alsop
By Tim Smith, The Baltimore Sun
11:28 AM EDT, July 29, 2013

Any number of things might happen in or to our world between now and 2021, a year that seems so sci-fi-distant. But one thing can be counted on: Marin Alsop will be music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra the whole time.

Last week, the BSO announced an extension of Alsop's contract, adding six years to her most recent deal, which was to have expired in 2015.

Assuming all goes as planned, the conductor will have enjoyed a 14-year tenure by the time this new contract expires, making her the second-longest-serving music director since the BSO was founded in 1916 a year less than Sergiu Comissiona (1969-84); a year more than those next in the longevity line, Gustav Strube (1917-30) and David Zinman (1985-98).

An outpouring of support
Jul 25, 2013
by Laura Ross,
Nashville Local 257 & ICSOM Secretary

For two hours at the AFM convention in Las Vegas on July 24, 2013, the entire AFM community and friends came together to support the Twin Cities Musicians' Union - Local 30-73 AFM, who have offered unflagging support to their two orchestras that have been under attack this past season - the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra that was locked out for 191 days and only recently returned to work, and the Minnesota Orchestra that has been locked out since October 2012.

Because Local 30-73 has been without the support of work dues from those two orchestras and also due to their subsidizing the locked-out orchestras' legal costs, AFM's Locals, AFM Officers, Locals Conferences and Players Conferences, AFM staff, guests - including a generous donation from ICSOM General Counsel Susan Martin, and even the IATSE cameraman filming the live stream of the convention on www.afm.org - stood at the microphone and offered their financial support for the Local as they continue their fight on behalf of the Minnesota Orchestra.

This overwhelming generosity was inspired by a report from Tim Zavadil, chair of the Minnesota Orchestra negotiating committee, on the opening day of convention proceedings.

All totaled, contributions to Local 30-73 came to $70,000.

Should any musician wish to contribute to this cause, check made out to Twin Cities Musicians Union Local 30-73 AFM may be sent to:

Join & Support the Theatre Musicians Association
Dear fellow Theatre Musician:

We all share a passion and dedication to our profession: performing the highest quality musical theatre for audiences in our home cities and across the country. The Theatre Musicians Association (TMA) is dedicated to ensuring live music remains a vital, thriving, and valued part of theatrical musicals now and in the years to come. Our purpose is to serve the needs of musicians who make this possible-whether they are playing on TMA Logo tour or performing in their home city.

What is TMA? The Theatre Musicians Association (TMA) is devoted solely to issues and concerns of theatre musicians. Formed in 1993 to ensure representation within the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), TMA was granted AFM Player Conference status in 1997. As a member of TMA your voice is heard and represented at the negotiating table-both nationally and locally.

In conjunction with the AFM, TMA has accomplished several key goals on behalf of our U.S. and Canadian members. Most Recently TMA:
* Helped eliminate 'Tiers' in the Pamphlet B Contract for Touring Musicians: The new Short Engagement Touring Agreement (SETA) replaces the Alternative Touring Agreement (ATA) in the Pamphlet B contract.

This new four-year contract replaces the five 'tiers' of weekly wages that ranged from $709.16 to $945.54 per week under the ATA. As a member of the bargaining unit, TMA gave the AFM a strong mandate to eliminate the tiers. Under the SETA, there is one weekly scale rate. SETA establishes a new scale: currently $850 for the first year increasing to $900 in the fourth year of the contract.

Other gains in the negotiation include: raised scale and rehearsal rates, increased contribution for healthcare, and the addition of a third "double" for those performing multiple instruments.

* Ensured Pamphlet B is not abused by producers to "get around" local minimums or other obligations: In one recent case, TMA Leadership, along with AFM staff and local Union Officers, fought attempts by producers to sidestep local hiring requirements. In this case, producers attempted to classify an open-ended run as a "touring stop" in order to hire fewer players. This TMA and AFM activism created a total of 16 local hires (instead of the 9 which the producers initially proposed) for over 10 months employment.

* Increased our membership by over 20%
* Welcomed Three New Local Chapters: In August of 2010, TMA established Chapters in Phoenix and Las Vegas, and also elected the chairman of the Broadway Theatre Committee as TMA Director for Broadway. As of March 14, 2013 TMA welcomed its newest Chapter: Washington, DC.

And now . . . we want you to get involved!

TMA Membership dues are tax-deductible and affordable-only $40 for 2012-2013 (some chapters have a modest local dues addition) - and our application is easily accessible online at www.afmtma.org

Plus, it's simple to join online with PayPal and support this crucial work:

*Protecting & Preserving Theatre Jobs
*Ensuring Safe & Harmonious Working Conditions
*Advocating for Increased Scale, Rehearsal Rates, & Healthcare Contributions

*Maintaining Solidarity & Connections with Your Fellow Musicians

TMA's electronic publications - "The Pit Bulletin" and "Pit Bulletin Blasts" - keep members current on issues affecting our livelihood:

* the impact of technology on our work
* healthcare and pension issues
* local and national wage scales
In addition, only TMA members can access current and future itineraries for all AFM touring shows on our secure website: www.afm-tma.org

In these critical times, solidarity is essential-a growing, active TMA membership means effective advocacy, stronger contracts, and a powerful voice in protecting live music in live theatre.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working together toward our common goals as theatre musicians!

Fraternally,

Tom Mendel, President
Theatre Musicians Association

The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.

The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band,it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). Dept. of Labor Newsletter

July 25, 2013

"I'm excited to start this job at such a pivotal moment for working people, our economy, American business and the entire nation. The Department of Labor's mission is as important as ever." That was the "Day One" message from Tom Perez, the nation's 26th secretary of labor. Secretary Perez's first day on the job was Tuesday, July 23. If his first week - which included meetings with agency heads and top staff, visits with stakeholders and departmental partners, and participation in White House events (and even a drop-by to the department's child care center) - is any indication, Secretary Perez intends to be very busy and actively engaged. He made a firm commitment to the department's 17,000 employees, as well as to working families across the nation: "For 100 years, our department has been central to safeguarding and expanding the American dream for working families. As the first Secretary of the department's second century, I will focus every day on creating more opportunity for more people."

Fast-Food Strike Is Biggest Yet

7/29/2013
By Mike Hall
fast food strike
In the biggest strike yet in the growing fast-food/low-wage workers' actions demanding a voice, thousands of workers making the minimum wage or just slightly more walked off the job in several cities today, demanding a living wage, no retaliation for striking and the right to join unions.

The walkouts are taking place in Chicago; Detroit; Flint, Mich.; Kansas City, Mo.; Milwaukee; New York City; and St. Louis and include workers from McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and KFC and from retail stores like Macy's, Victoria's Secret and Dollar Tree.

The accompanying photo is a mailer from Americans for Prosperity (The Koch Brothers) that is being distributed in Senate District 11. This is proof that these recall attacks are part of the right wing agenda to hurt working families (as there is no talk about guns). Please do all you can to give time and resources to the campaign.

We need to beat these attacks and show the Koch Brothers that they don't stand a chance in Colorado!

The recall election has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th. Ballots will be mailed out on August 19th, so we have a very short time frame to make sure Senator Angela Giron stays in office. We cannot let her down.

Senate Confirms NLRB Nominees; Board at Full Strength

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is now fully staffed and able to continue to function to protect workers' rights after the U.S. Senate today confirmed five members. The votes end a months-long blockade on President Obama's nominees by Senate Republicans who threatened to shut the board down Aug. 27.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says the confirmations are:

Good news for all workers seeking to exercise the rights they are guaranteed by law. Those essential rights include the ability to bargain together for fair wages and living standards and a workplace safe from abuse, harassment and intimidation.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
