Omaha Symphony's Economic Impact Hits High Note
wowt.com
July 02, 2013

The Omaha Symphony has generated an accumulative economic impact of $45 million in Douglas County during the past five years, according to a new study.

The Omaha Symphony and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Bureau of Business Research today announced the results of the study, including an impact of $22.52 million in labor income paid to an estimated 161 workers in the five-year period ending June 30, 2012. During that same time, the symphony's economic impact on the state of Nebraska (outside Douglas Omaha Symphony Logo County) was $36.95 million, including $17.87 million in labor income.

Last year alone, officials said the Omaha Symphony's economic impact was $8.88 million in Douglas County, including $4.47 million in labor income paid during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.

Artists For An Ethical and Sustainable Internet
May 21, 2013

Of course there will always be people to nit pick the numbers, to argue and quibble about the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (BLS) methodology. It may be impossible to estimate the exact effect of unethical internet exploitation, but the trend is definite.

Those who debate the exact numbers are using that to delay action. Their job is similar to the commentators and 'scientists' funded by oil companies' to deny global warming or say it needs "more study."

The Bureau Of Labor Statistics is an agnostic government agency, not the RIAA.

It is also important to note that these cuts are made from the bottom up, not the top down. It is the struggling and middle class musician that gets hurt first. The difference between "making a living, making music" or not is represented in these numbers.

We should also like to point out that while musicians are making less money, those in Silicon Valley are making more money. Jaron Lanier says that "the internet destroyed the middle class" and we can see for ourselves that through the systematic process of removing the cost of labor from their offerings the elite few, are making more money, while everyone else is doing more of the work.

In the Deep South, hope and help for children in need comes in the shape of violins and cellos
By Deborah Hastings / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
June 29, 2013

In the Deep South, in an Alabama town where the civil rights movement erupted and endured, disadvantaged children are being given hope and help, one stringed instrument at a time.

For 10-year-old Heaven Thrasher, both arrived in the form of a brand new cello, a contraption she knew nothing about.

But when the Montgomery Music Project came to her elementary school, Heaven was mesmerized by the the sweet, deep sounds emanating from an instrument nearly as tall as her.

"She just fell in love with it," says her mother, Michelle, a disabled single mom who struggles to raise four children.

"We have very little income," Thrasher said, and she knew she couldn't afford music lessons.

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra introduces James Roe as CEO and Susan Stucker as COO of the organization (Fred Stucker/NJSO)

NEWARK - Stung by its recent hiring blunder, the board of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra has tapped two insiders - including a former vice president who has been with the organization since 1989 - to lead the state's largest musical ensemble.

Acting principal oboe player James Roe will be president and CEO, and interim president and former vice president Susan Stucker will become COO, the orchestra announced. The pair, selected by a search committee working since March, will begin their new jobs July 1.

19 Firefighters Killed Battling Arizona Wildfire
7/01/2013
Mike Hall

19 lost firefighters Nineteen Arizona fire fighters, 18 from an elite wildfire unit, were killed Sunday in an out-of-control blaze about 80 miles north of Phoenix. The members of the Prescott Fire Department's Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew team were dispatched to the front lines of the Yarnell Hill fire to establish a fire line to try to slow fire that reportedly had wind-driven flames as high as 20 feet.

Says AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the brave heroes we lost in Arizona. It is a terrible tragedy  even for the heroes who willingly  put their life on the line every day for our safety."

So here we are, getting ready to make the big jump from high school to college and many hopeful, would be students are finding out that, as of 7/1/2013, interest rates on college loans are jumping from 3.4% to 6.8%!

For that wonderful news we owe our thanks to the inability of our political whiz kids in Washington D.C. to do anything about holding college loan rates in line. Loan interest rates which many feel are already too high, are going to be exactly double.

Is it my imagination or does Congress seem to be intent on letting things that might help our kids out just the tiniest little bit go to hell in a hand basket? They're not getting any breaks on tuition or books or living accommodations or anything else that I can think of, and now this? Why the hell would you want to bury yourself in debt to get a better education when you're going to have to spend half of the rest of your life working two jobs just to pay for it?

The Colorado Independent
July 03, 2013

George Bush Hundreds of students, staffers and alumni are protesting the University of Denver's decision to honor former President George W. Bush with an award traditionally recognizing recipients for their work on behalf of humanity.

"It's been mostly just a lot of surprise," Seth Masket, associate professor of Political Science said of the award to be bestowed by the University's Josef Korbel School of International Studies.

"Why Korbel sought out to do this and honor Bush in this way - it all seems very unusual."

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
