Johnny Smith, a jazz guitarist who was considered one of the emerging greats of his generation when he left the limelight in 1958 to move to Colorado, open a record store and become a full-time parent, died on June 11 at his home in Colorado Springs. He was 90.

His daughter, Kim Smith Stewart, confirmed his death.

Mr. Smith was revered by guitarists for his pure tone and flawless technique, which gave his most complex improvisations an effortless, almost weightless quality. His dreamy rendition of "Moonlight in Vermont," recorded in 1952 with a group that included Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, was one of the best-selling jazz records of all time.

Groove Stage at Make Music Denver
Groove Auto Stage at 4:45 PM
By Pete Vriesenga
June 21, 2013

Finding a good parking spot was never as easy as it was today, and conveniently at the corner of 15th and Tremont near the Make Music Denver mainstage.

I don't know of an occasion when I've seen fewer people at a music festival. The band was nearing the end of their performance and nobody was there. The stage was in an ideal location in front of the Denver Pavillions Mall where large crowds typically gather without a music festival. 'Something' was keeping the audience away.

Six blocks down the Mall at the Skyline Market Stage (Skyline Park) turnout was no better. The park was lined with enough food vendors to feed an army, but I didn't observe a single sale. Maybe next year will be better if the Downtown Denver Partnership learns to respect musicians. This will happen only with a change of management.

Tami Door, CEO of the Downtown Partnership, expressed her thoughts about Make Music Denver in a 6/20 Westword Interview. I responded with my comments. Please take a moment to express yours.

Groove Auto Stage overlooking Glenarm St. Band pictured in first photo is still performing while another band is preparing for a 5:30 start. On any given day you would see hundreds of people at this location, especially on a Friday afternoon. Did MMD succeed in turning people away?

Tuesday in Denver: Protest the Urban Camping Ban and Attend the Public Hearing
☆YOU'RE INVITED!☆
Take Action
Tuesday in Denver

Host: Irene C.

Where: City and County Building, Colfax & Bannock St. (in Denver)

When: Tuesday at 12 p.m.

What: Join us for a protest and a public hearing on the Urban Camping Ban before the Denver City Council. It has been over a year since the Urban Camping Ban was passed, and it has had devastating effects on the homeless as demonstrated by a survey conducted by Denver Homeless Out Loud. The callous, "kick 'em when they're down" attitude demonstrated by the Denver City Council is unacceptable and beneath the caliber of our compassionate Denver community. We need to let them know that the Urban Camping Ban is a cruel law that punishes the homeless for trying to survive. Can you join us in Denver on Tuesday?

Turkish Labor Unions Launch General Strike
For the second time this month Turkish labor unions have called a general strike to protest the harsh police actions against protesters in Istanbul's Taksim square. Five trade union confederations began a one-day nationwide strike Monday and are calling on workers to take to the streets to protest government actions.

Big Lie: America Doesn't Have #1 Richest Middle-Class in the World...We're Ranked 27th!
June 18, 2013

America is the richest country on Earth. We have the most millionaires, the most billionaires and our wealthiest citizens have garnered more of the planet's riches than any other group in the world. We even have hedge fund managers who make in one hour as much as the average family makes in 21 years!

This opulence is supposed to trickle down to the rest of us, improving the lives of everyday Americans. At least that's what free-market cheerleaders repeatedly promise us.

Unfortunately, it's a lie, one of the biggest ever perpetrated on the American people.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
