DMA Boycott of Make Music Denver
The DMA Board of Directors is officially boycotting Make Music Denver. This is a formal request of DMA members who are asked not to perform for MMD until this matter is resolved.

The DMA also encourages all non-union musicians to honor this boycott. Obviously there is no loss in income nor is there a valid contract to break. We should instead dedicate our time to the true meaning of World Music Day, which is anything but exploitation of musicians.

Thank you for your support!

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) - For the second time in just a matter of weeks, a musician was arrested for playing on the city's streets.

The most recent arrest was just outside Turner Field, where police took a man's trombone and cuffed him.

The man's name is Eryk McDaniel, and people said he can really play a mean trombone.

Last Friday he was just playing on the sidewalk, entertaining the crowds as they were heading into a Braves game, when officers came up and told him to leave.

He told them he had every right to play there, but the cops had other plans.

AFM 2013 National Diversity Survey
The AFM Diversity Council is committed to providing access and a pathway to success for all of our member musicians. Working in cooperation with the AFL-CIO and other national civil and human rights organizations we depend on interaction and feedback from our members that will allow us to craft contemporary programs that are meaningful to career growth.

Diversity is the driving factor that serves as the foundation for growth within the labor movement.  In response to AFL-CIO Resolution 7 (file attached), adopted at the 2009 AFL-CIO Convention, the following survey is developed as a response to the Resolution's mandate for all affiliate union's to build diversity within their unions.  To help achieve that goal, the AFM Diversity Committee asks that you take a moment to complete this short survey.

As you can see, no name or identifying information is requested.  Our plan is to involve as many members as possible in order to garner a representative sampling.  Access to this document is provided only over a secure internet link via the AFM Diversity web page.  We will not retain or distribute email addresses.  As usual, all information gathered via this post will be used in strict compliance with the AFM's express privacy policy.

The results of the survey will be tallied by the AFM Diversity Committee and results shared only with the AFM and the AFL-CIO.  You may contact us anytime via the web to if you have questions or to obtain additional guidance before you submit.  Or you can contact Alfonso M. Trinity Presbyterian/CSO concert, 6/7
Trinity Presbyterian Church, in collaboration with the Colorado Symphony and the Haydn Quartet Slam 2012-2013 Project, is pleased to present

A Tale of Two Masters: String Quartets of Haydn and Beethoven
Friday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Trinity Presbyterian Church, 7755 Vance Drive, Arvada 80003

This program will juxtapose an early and a middle work of Haydn (Op 9 #3 in G major and Op 17 #3 in E-flat major) with an early work of Beethoven (Op 18 #4 in c minor).

Early on, Beethoven studied with Haydn, the father of the string quartet form but later pushed the form into its own genre altogether. Catherine Beeson

Catherine Beeson (CSO violist featured on this concert) states it well: "What Haydn began, Beethoven grew into a wildly textured and innovative world."

The three quartets featured on this June 7 program at Trinity show a gathering of strength and energy in the Classical period which gives rise to the quartets of the early Romantic period and beyond.

Don't miss this exciting evening!

Tickets: $15 for adults, $10 for students through high school.
Pre-reserve by calling 303-422-3656 x6000 or visiting the church website at www.tpcarvada.org and clicking on the "2nd Tuesdays at Trinity" link.

The United Mine Workers of America is planning a series of event to commemorate this tragedy. many academic and labor historian groups have been planning events and speaking engagements on Ludlow.

The UMWA has moved its 2013 Annual Memorial Service, normally held in June, to Sunday, September 22, 2013, to commemorate the start of the strike. The 2014 event will be held the weekend of May 18, 2014, to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Massacre. WE considered April 20, 2014, the date of the tragedy, but that is Easter Sunday. We are planning a prayer vigil that day but the remembrance will be held May 18th. We are also planning a re-enactment of the Mother Jones March in Trinidad in February 2014. The date and time will be announced at a later time.

I am writing to you today not only to invite you to attend these functions, but to ask how Organized Labor can commemorate this event. Men, women and children died in the Ludlow struggle for economic justice. It's my opinion that the greatest tribute we can give them is to use the 100th Anniversary to further their cause.

Understanding the Need for Full Employment
06/06/2013
William Spriggs

Understanding Unemployment Last week, the Social Security Trust Fund report was released. One of its more telling charts was of the trend in Social Security revenue. Social Security revenue comes from a tax on the wages of earners, paid by both employees and employers. So, essentially it tracks the level of employment. Based on the simple trend of revenues from 1990 to 2007, just before the Great Recession started, 2012 revenue would have been $899.4 billion; instead, it was $840 billion.  That gap means less money to build up the Social Security Trust Fund than expected. The trustees do not break down the revenue by the age of workers, but based on the dramatically lower employment experience of young workers, the bulk of that gap reflects the lost wages of young people.

That gap also represents another side to the young worker crisis. Of course, a smaller Social Security Trust Fund is a crisis for all of us. But, the gap in earnings of young people also reflects they are not building up the wage record on which their Social Security benefits will be based.

'American Winter' Film
Please join us for an evening featuring the Screening of the film 'AMERICAN WINTER.' This should prove to be an informative evening and all Workers and their Families are invited to attend.  The purpose of this event is to underscore the plight of America's Working Class and begin conversations to create possible solutions.

Film preview: http://www.americanwinterfilm.com/

Wednesday June 12th, 2013
IBEW Local Union 68
5660 Logan St, Denver

5:30pm Start
Discussion/Forum to follow

Plan on seeing the entire film and then join in the facilitated discussion afterwards.  (Please see attached flyer for more.)

The timing of the June 12, 2013 screening is great for several reasons:

1.    The families of the documentary are testifying at a House Committee in DC on June 5th, 2013
2.    There is a delegation of Wal-Mart workers from San Francisco who have been laid off and will be in Denver at the UFCW Local 7 on Friday May 31, 2013 for a dinner and presentation 6pm at UFCW Local 7 on May 31, 2013.  The workers are on the way to Arkansas to address Wal-Mart owners.
3.    There will also be an action at a Target Shareholders meeting on June 12, 2013- due to the fact that Target purchased a Canadian company which will result in a layoff of 28000 workers across Canada
4.    There is also increased pressure at the Federal level to assure that the Making Homes Affordable Program work for homeowners facing default or foreclosure on their homes.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
