Keith Jarrett - on music performance
|
A musician goes on stage hoping to have a rendezvous with music. He/she knows the music is there, but the meeting depends not only on knowledge but on openness. It must be let in, recognized, and revealed to the listener, the first of which is the musician. This is the most misunderstood part of the process. It is a discrimination against mechanical pattern for content, against habit for surprise, against easy virtuosity for saying more with less, against facile emotion for a certain quality of energy, against stasis for flow, against military precision for tactile pulse. It is an attempt over and over again to reveal the heart of things.

A new generation of nonprofit organizations
... and their impact on your livelihood
By Pete Vriesenga
On May 28 I filed a formal complaint with the Colorado Dept. of Labor and Employment. At issue is the 2nd Annual Make Music Denver (MMD) Day on June 21, 2013, produced by Downtown Denver Events, Inc, (DDE). All musicians, including professionals, are obligated by terms and conditions of DDE's contract to work for free.
Downtown Denver Events is one four nonprofit subsidiaries of the Downtown Denver Partnership (also Denver Civic Ventures, Inc., and Downtown Denver, Inc.). Collectively these groups represent billions of dollars in partner wealth and assets. DDP has no problem spending money on themselves. CEO Tamara (Tami) Door earns $360k/year for leading all four nonprofits and DDP's staff collectively earn $2.4 million/year. Add another couple of million for posh downtown offices and big business lobbying efforts and it's no surprise there's nothing left for musicians.
Despite DDP's 'shoestring' budget, the show must go on! In fact, DDE already committed to the IRS that they would "foster and promote cultural diversity, community pride and appreciation for the arts." Make Music Denver is now Tami's way of saying how much their downtown partners appreciate and care for musicians, much like a pick me up bouquet but only cheaper. Just accept that musicians who perform for their festival must be either independently wealthy or they shall remain poor ... even "busking for tips" is expressly prohibited under their musician contract.

Ari Pelto Joins Opera Colorado as Artistic Adviser
|
 | Ari Pelto |
Opera Colorado announced that it has appointed conductor Ari Pelto as Artistic Adviser. Pelto's role will commence with the Company's 2014 season, working hand-in-hand with General Director Greg Carpenter and conducting one opera per season beginning in the fall of 2014. Pelto made his Opera Colorado debut earlier this year, conducting the company's highly-acclaimed production of Mozart's Don Giovanni in March 2013. Known for presenting contemporary and rarely performed works as well as more traditional productions of classic opera repertoire, Opera Colorado is the preeminent grand opera company in the Rocky Mountain region and a vital presence in Denver's cultural ecology.
"This spring I had the tremendous pleasure of working with Opera Colorado on Don Giovanni," Pelto said. "It is gratifying to work with a company that is known throughout the opera world for its thoughtful programming and impeccable performance standards. I am honored to be joining Opera Colorado as Artistic Adviser at this exciting time and very much look forward to collaborating with Greg to continue to bring great opera to life in Denver."

Trinity Presbyterian/CSO concert, 6/7
|
Trinity Presbyterian Church, in collaboration with the Colorado Symphony and the Haydn Quartet Slam 2012-2013 Project, is pleased to present A Tale of Two Masters: String Quartets of Haydn and Beethoven Friday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. Trinity Presbyterian Church, 7755 Vance Drive, Arvada 80003 This program will juxtapose an early and a middle work of Haydn (Op 9 #3 in G major and Op 17 #3 in E-flat major) with an early work of Beethoven (Op 18 #4 in c minor). Early on, Beethoven studied with Haydn, the father of the string quartet form but later pushed the form into its own genre altogether. Catherine Beeson (CSO violist featured on this concert) states it well: "What Haydn began, Beethoven grew into a wildly textured and innovative world." The three quartets featured on this June 7 program at Trinity show a gathering of strength and energy in the Classical period which gives rise to the quartets of the early Romantic period and beyond. Don't miss this exciting evening! Tickets: $15 for adults, $10 for students through high school. Pre-reserve by calling 303-422-3656 x6000 or visiting the church website at www.tpcarvada.org and clicking on the "2nd Tuesdays at Trinity" link.

Stress leave a rising source of contention for employers
| 5/28/2013 By Aldo Svaldi The Denver Post For most people, stress just comes with the job. For a growing number of workers, however, that stress is becoming a health problem keeping them from work. "The issue is: How do you distinguish between ordinary stress and something that is considered a serious health condition?" said Natasha Wilson, an attorney with Greenberg Traurig in Atlanta who has written on the topic. The Family Medical Leave Act, the most common vehicle used for stress leave, defines a serious health condition as a medical condition that lasts for three or more consecutive days and requires a doctor's treatment, she said. Trumka: Austerity's Valid as 'Flat Earth' Theory
|
In Paris on Tuesday, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka warned the leaders and policymakers of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that the financial austerity measures, like those taken by European nations, destroy jobs, increase inequality and likely feed the public's mistrust of government.
Taking part in the OECD forum "Austerity Versus Growth," Trumka-a member of the OECD's Trade Union Advisory Committee-slammed the idea that austerity measures will move nations out the economic doldrums.
Is austerity vs. growth a false dilemma? This is a foolish question in the same way that it is a foolish question whether the earth is flat, or whether the sun goes around the earth or the earth goes around the sun. And people who still maintain that austerity leads to growth do so for the same reason the Inquisition insisted the sun went around the earth-to maintain themselves in power.

High-Tech's Low-Wage Strategy
|
When Microsoft, Oracle, Facebook and the other big-time cyber giants say they need to import more foreign high-tech workers and then put on a full-scale lobbying assault to up the number of H-1B visas allowed in the immigration reform bill now under consideration, what are they really after? AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka has the answer in an op-ed in today's edition of USA Today.
This is about powerful companies pursuing lower wages.
The high-tech industry claims there is a shortage of qualified U.S. workers to fill their jobs. But, writes Trumka, in the fields of computer and information science and engineering, U.S. colleges graduate 50% more students than there are new hires.

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish! Or if it's carbon fiber? I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area. But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price! Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
