The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra after the storm
By Brad C. Eggen
05/16/2013

The musicians of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra reluctantly accepted a shorter season and a 19 percent wage cut, the contract their employer insisted was the only chance to restore them to the stage.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman described the move as adopting "major concessions," and the musicians' committee representative called this a contract needed "to assure that there will be a 2013-2014 season." It is now time to digest the impact of management's dissonant six-month lock-out of artists recognized by many as the finest chamber musicians in America.

AFM President Derides Lockouts at Solidarity Benefit Concert for Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra

New York, NY - American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) International President Ray Hair condemned the ongoing abuse toward Twin Cities orchestra musicians on Monday, April 29, in an address during a solidarity concert presented by the musicians of the Grammy award winning San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, held to benefit their brothers and sisters in the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) and Minnesota Orchestra. Musicians from both orchestras have been locked out, without pay and health care, for more than six months. Many are struggling financially. Some have lost their homes and have had to move away from their communities.  SPCO musicians reached a tentative agreement with management in April and were expected to return to work on April 30, while Minnesota Orchestra
AFM President Ray Hair at Solidarity Benefit Concert for the MN Orchestra & SPCO in SF

musicians remain locked out indefinitely.

In remarks directed toward the managers and boards of directors of the locked out musicians, Hair said, "You can't shake our resolve and our will to resist. In the face of your attempts to intimidate us, your decision to lock us out and your efforts to starve us into submission, we come together tonight to perform our music and we will do it as we always have - absolutely perfectly.. There is no better expression of unity, no better demonstration of courage, no better emblem of solidarity."

City of Denver Cultural Plan Survey
For the following survey, we are interested in your perceptions of arts, culture, and creativity in Denver. This information will be used to develop a cultural plan for the city, which will help shape the city's priorities and inform its decisions about different cultural initiatives and funding. The survey will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Your feedback is extremely valuable, and as a token of our appreciation, you will have the option of entering into a raffle for various prizes after you have submitted the survey.

We appreciate your time and honest feedback! All responses are completely confidential, and you will never be linked to your responses.

Editor's Note: Corona Insights created this survey and should have disclosed their conflict of interest since they have been directly engaged for SCFD's reauthorization effort (See SCFD Board Planning Session Minutes, April 8, 2011).

I found it nearly impossible to provide genuine and productive answers to multiple choice options without clicking "other" at every turn. I believe Karla Raines and Corona Insights are looking for a desired outcome, as was the case when James Palermo hired her to convince CSO musicians that the Union was the problem.

Broadway Music School Presents, 5/24
Joshua Breakstone Duo
NYC jazz master guitarist.

Concert: Friday, May 24 at 7:30 PM

New York City jazz guitarist Joshua Breakstone with his touring bassist Earl Sauls live in concert at the Broadway Music School Friday, May 24 at 7:30 PM. Come hear two of NYC's top jazz musicians in a great sounding venue! Joshua has been recording albums as a leader since the 70's

Guitar Player magazine says: '"His flowing lines on up-tempo cookers are impeccably clean and fiery, bearing the mark of a first-rate improviser, while his chordal work on heartbreaker ballads is the final word in finesse." Downbeat has written that "There is no shortage of knock-out jazz guitarists about us these days. And Joshua Breakstone is among the best of them."

Workshop: 1:00-3:00 PM, Saturday, May 25th - "Saying it: How to Develop Your own Voice for Soloing"
From Joshua: The dynamics we use in speaking are literally the same dynamics which allow us to communicate on a deep level and in a unique way in music. We'll explore applying the dynamics of the voice- the dynamics of speech- to jazz improvisation and see how each of us can use these dynamics in a personal way to develop a unique voice.

All this and much more will be touched on, including historical references, ideas about repertoire, practicing, the traps and pitfalls intrinsic to your instrument itself, how to listen to jazz, the functioning of the rhythm section, etc.

Examples will be demonstrated and, hopefully, workshop participants will participate as well- bring your instruments!  Broadway Music School - 1940 S Broadway St  303-777-0833  info@broadwaymusicschool.com

I am excited to announce that I was just able to confirm two nights - May 24th and 25th, the last Fri and Sat of May - at Denver's great jazz venue Dazzle where I will be bringing in special guest and international drummer Kenwood Dennard to join my quartet. Kenwood and I were part of a nationwide tour in 1988 and this will be the first time we have performed together since that time. As the lead drum teacher at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Kenwood has fostered scores of upcoming musicians. In addition Kenwood has recorded and toured with the very best: Pat Martino, Sting, Miles Davis, Stanley Jordan, Maceo Parker, Whitney Houston, Chic Corea and Herbie Hancock to name a few!

If you can arrange to make one of these 4 shows (7 and 9 pm ea. night), you will not be sorry! Joining us will be the incomparable pianist Chuck Lamb (tours with Brubeck Bros) and Bijoux Barbosa on bass.
Dazzle is a great "family friendly" venue with excellent food as well. If you are interested, mark your calendar and follow the link below for info and online reserved ticket sales. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 303-839-5100. Join us if you can!

Trinity Presbyterian/CSO concert, 6/7
Trinity Presbyterian Church, in collaboration with the Colorado Symphony and the Haydn Quartet Slam 2012-2013 Project, is pleased to present

A Tale of Two Masters: String Quartets of Haydn and Beethoven
Friday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Trinity Presbyterian Church, 7755 Vance Drive, Arvada 80003

This program will juxtapose an early and a middle work of Haydn (Op 9 #3 in G major and Op 17 #3 in E-flat major) with an early work of Beethoven (Op 18 #4 in c minor).

Early on, Beethoven studied with Haydn, the father of the string quartet form but later pushed the form into its own genre altogether. Catherine Beeson

Catherine Beeson (CSO violist featured on this concert) states it well: "What Haydn began, Beethoven grew into a wildly textured and innovative world."

The three quartets featured on this June 7 program at Trinity show a gathering of strength and energy in the Classical period which gives rise to the quartets of the early Romantic period and beyond.

Don't miss this exciting evening!

Tickets: $15 for adults, $10 for students through high school.
Pre-reserve by calling 303-422-3656 x6000 or visiting the church website at www.tpcarvada.org and clicking on the "2nd Tuesdays at Trinity" link.

How You Can Help the Oklahoma Tornado Disaster Relief
Oklahoma National Guard photo/flickr
UPDATE: The death toll from the Moore tornado has been revised downward and stands at 24 as of noon today. But officials say they expect it to increase as rescue workers search the wreckage.

While rescue operations continue in Moore, Okla., after one of the worst and deadliest tornadoes on record that has claimed more than 50 lives, with the toll expected to climb, relief efforts are being organized. The Oklahoma State AFL-CIO and central labor council community service liaisons are working through the United Way.

Relief efforts are in their early stages and the United Way of Central Oklahoma has activated its disaster relief fund. Information on the fund can be found at www.unitedwayokc.org. Donations may be made through their website or by mail to United Way of Central Oklahoma, P.O. Box 837, Oklahoma City, OK 73101, with notation for May Tornado Relief.

Retailers Key to Bangladesh Worker Safety, Investors Tell Walmart, Gap

Clean Clothing Campaign illustration

A coalition of faith organizations, investors and labor groups-including the AFL-CIO-is urging major U.S. retailers, including Walmart, Gap, Sears and others, to sign on to a binding workplace and fire safety plan to prevent tragedies such as the recent building collapse in Bangladesh that killed more than 1,100 garment workers and two 2012 fires that claimed the lives of more than 400 Bangladeshi clothing workers.

The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) wrote that those disasters are:

A grave indictment of the human rights record of Bangladesh and an illustration of the failure of the global companies that manufacture and source their products there to ensure humane working conditions.

Apple's Web of Tax Shelters Saved It Billions, Panel Finds
By NELSON D. SCHWARTZ and CHARLES DUHIGG
New York Times
Published: May 20, 2013

WASHINGTON - Even as Apple became the nation's most profitable technology company, it avoided billions in taxes in the United States and around the world through a web of subsidiaries so complex it spanned continents and went beyond anything most experts had ever seen, Congressional investigators disclosed on Monday.

The investigation is expected to set up a potentially explosive confrontation between a bipartisan group of lawmakers and Timothy D. Cook, Apple's chief executive, at a public hearing on Tuesday.

Congressional investigators found that some of Apple's subsidiaries had no employees and were largely run by top officials from the company's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. But by officially locating them in places like Ireland, Apple was able to, in effect, make them stateless - exempt from taxes, record-keeping laws and the need for the subsidiaries to even file tax returns anywhere in the world.

Governor Hickenlooper to sign the Keep Jobs in CO Act this Friday in Pueblo
After six long years of trying to advance real procurement reform, we are pleased to announce that Governor Hickenlooper will be signing HB 1292 - The Keep Jobs in CO Act - on Friday May 24th at 3:10pm in Pueblo at the United Steelworkers Union Hall located at 1414 East Evans Avenue Pueblo, CO 81004.

You are cordially invited to come share this momentous occasion with us and thank Governor Hickenlooper for prioritizing our state tax dollars to create good jobs that support Colorado workers and domestic manufacturing. Again, we would like to acknowledge and thank the legislators who sponsored the bill and the affiliate leaders that greatly contributed to this strong piece of legislation.

This is a big deal and we really need your help building a crowd to celebrate. This legislation will help our trades and manufacturing affiliates. Please invite your local union leaders and activists to attend, schedules permitting.

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish!  Or if it's carbon fiber?  I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area.  But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price!  Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
