In Memory - Donald Ambler
|
On May 9, 2013, our musical community in Denver lost a treasured teacher, mentor and friend - Mr. Don Ambler. Mr. Ambler was an amazing human being who touched lives in a deep and lasting way. A humble man, his goal was to play and teach the clarinet and share his love of music and the instrument with others. He was the bass clarinetist for 30 years with the Denver Symphony Orchestra - now the Colorado Symphony. Mr. Ambler taught the clarinet at Rockley Music Center for 30+ years.
The Colorado Clarinet Choir was one Ambler's most enjoyable environments for teaching. For nearly four decades, Ambler has overseen the choir, so long that clarinetists who started in the choir as his students have grown to become professionals and teachers and even retirees, but still return to play with the group. And there is no doubt that Ambler, who played with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra for 30 years and has taught hundreds to play the clarinet, is its patriarch.
"He's a real treasure," said Michael Weaver, a professional clarinetist who plays with the choir, "and it is unfortunate that not everyone outside of our little community have had the privilege and opportunity to work with someone as wonderful as Mr. Ambler. He certainly was 'one-of-a-kind!'"
Ambler didn't have much of a family as a child. He and his twin brother, Dale, grew up in an orphanage in Indiana. When Dale died from an illness at age 9, Ambler was all alone. But he had his clarinet - cheap and metal, bought at a pawn shop for $4. Ambler taught himself to play, and he practiced as much as he could as he bounced through six foster homes.
"I made a lot of mistakes," Ambler said of his first efforts on the instrument. "It was a little slow starting, but it picked up pretty well." By high school, he was already teaching others. College in Chicago led to stints in New York and Philadelphia before he landed a job playing bass clarinet with the Denver Symphony. Here Ambler built his legacy. Beginners just learning how to play a note, he nurtured. Professionals trying to nail an audition, he encouraged. When a college kid was hungry, he bought dinner. When a student needed a clarinet part, he provided.
"I wouldn't know how to play bass clarinet without him," said Andy Stevens, the Colorado Symphony's bass clarinetist."
Mr. Ambler loved jokes and puns and for some reason it was always his birthday when he stopped by!
Mr. Ambler's Visitation/Viewing will be this Thursday, May 16 at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO 80227, from 11-2:30. Burial service will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery at 3:00.
Memorial service and Reception will be Monday, May 20 at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7531 S. Kendall Blvd, Littleton, CO 80128 (Ken Caryl Ave. at Kendall), at 11:00.
Memorial gifts can be made to the Donald L. Ambler Trust, P.O. Box 270043, Littleton, CO 80127. The purpose of the trust will be to provide scholarships to young clarinetists pursuing an education in music, as well as to continue the good work of the Colorado Clarinet Choir.

Our meeting with the Downtown Denver Partnership
By Pete Vriesenga | Pete Vriesenga |
After being put off for twelve months we finally scheduled a meeting with the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) which represents billions of dollars in big business/member assets. DDP President & CEO Tamara Door never responded personally to my 5/1/13 email, and I expect she has more important things to do and people to meet. I did however receive a response from DDP's Event Operations Manger Lorinn Rhodes. DMA Vice President Thomas Blomster and I were now ready to begin our quest to see that professional musicians who perform for Make Music Denver are paid ... something.
With our long-awaited meeting now only moments away, we stepped into the elevator from the lobby of the magnificent Paramount Theater Building at 16th and Glenarm. Although relieved to be out of the rain, we waited in anticipation, not knowing what lies ahead. Would these prominent business leaders actually listen to our arguments and agree to pay "something" to the musicians? Or, would our hopes be quickly dashed by Wall Street tycoons looking to experience their first labor/management negotiation, motivated by the sport of conquest. Seizing on a moment of confidence, Thomas and I looked to each other reassuringly ... we're on a Mission from God!

The Juilliard Effect: Ten Years Later
|
NY Times Published: December 12, 2004 FOURTEEN years ago, Chad A. Alexander took his bassoon and headed east from a small California town, assumed a coveted place at the Juilliard School and began training for a job in one of the country's great orchestras. "Everything seemed possible," he said recently. "Going to Juilliard makes you feel very special and privileged and in awe of the history of the school." He graduated and quickly won a three-year position in the New World Symphony, a training orchestra based in Miami. But his career fizzled with a succession of fruitless auditions, dwindling freelance gigs and mounting debt.

City of Denver Cultural Plan Survey
|
For the following survey, we are interested in your perceptions of arts, culture, and creativity in Denver. This information will be used to develop a cultural plan for the city, which will help shape the city's priorities and inform its decisions about different cultural initiatives and funding. The survey will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Your feedback is extremely valuable, and as a token of our appreciation, you will have the option of entering into a raffle for various prizes after you have submitted the survey.
We appreciate your time and honest feedback! All responses are completely confidential, and you will never be linked to your responses.
Editor's Note: Corona Insights created this survey and should have disclosed their conflict of interest since they have been directly engaged for SCFD's reauthorization effort (See SCFD Board Planning Session Minutes, April 8, 2011). I found it nearly impossible to provide genuine and productive answers to multiple choice options without clicking "other" at every turn. I believe Karla Raines and Corona Insights are looking for a desired outcome, as was the case when James Palermo hired her to convince CSO musicians that the Union was the problem.Pete Vriesenga

An Orchestra in the Throes of a Lockout
|
By JAMES R. OESTREICH NY Times May 12, 2013 When the Finnish conductor Osmo Vanska took over as music director of the Minnesota Orchestra in 2003, he told the players that he wanted it to be "the best orchestra in this country in four or five years," he recounted in a 2006 interview. "At least no one laughed," he added. Outsiders, however, may have scoffed. Every incoming maestro would desire such a rosy outcome; achieving it is another matter. And who, after all, was this little-known maestro - experienced mainly in provincial outposts (the Tapiola Sinfonietta and Lahti Symphony in Finland, the Iceland Symphony, the BBC Scottish Symphony) and new to the American orchestral scene - to lead Minnesota to the mountaintop?

Andrew Litton, conductor/ piano
Due to the budget cutbacks from the government sequestration, the Washington D. C. based U.S. Army Chorus will not be able to appear with the Colorado Symphony. The U.S. Army Chorus program will be replaced with an evening of music by George Gershwin. Artistic Advisor Andrew Litton will conduct in a previously unscheduled appearance. The centerpiece of the program, Rhapsody in Blue, features Mr. Litton on piano. Current ticket holders to the U.S. Army Chorus concert may use their tickets for the Gershwin concert without any further action. If you are unable to attend the Gershwin program or have any further questions, please contact the Colorado Symphony Box Office.
George Gershwin's music is instantly recognizable and evocative of America in the early 20th century. Appearing in everything from the stage to popular culture, his music is the perfect tribute to the rich tapestry of this nation. In addition to Rhapsody in Blue, the program includes the Overture to Crazy for You, and Who Cares? a ballet featuring the Gershwin songbook with songs that include Strike Up The Band, The Man I Love, Somebody Loves Me, I Got Rhythm, and many more. Come and be swept up in the music that has made Gershwin an icon.

I am excited to announce that I was just able to confirm two nights - May 24th and 25th, the last Fri and Sat of May - at Denver's great jazz venue Dazzle where I will be bringing in special guest and international drummer Kenwood Dennard to join my quartet. Kenwood and I were part of a nationwide tour in 1988 and this will be the first time we have performed together since that time. In addition Kenwood has recorded and toured with the very best: Pat Martino, Sting, Miles Davis, Stanley Jordan, Maceo Parker, Whitney Houston, Chic Corea and Herbie Hancock to name a few! If you can arrange to make one of these 4 shows (7 and 9 pm ea. night), you will not be sorry! Joining us will be the incomparable pianist Chuck Lamb (tours with Brubeck Bros) and Bijoux Barbosa on bass. Dazzle is a great "family friendly" venue with excellent food as well. The Labor Movement Gave My Family a 'Ticket to the Middle Class'
| Lisa Maldonado I can't remember how old I was before I knew my father was undocumented. By the time I was 5 or 6, my father's long and arduous journey from Michoacán, Mexico, to our small American town of Redwood City, Calif., had already become part of our family lore. I heard how hard and exhausting it was for him, as a young boy and then a teen, to have to work every day picking cotton, strawberries and grapes in 100-degree heat. His stories captured my imagination when I considered how hard he worked and how far he had come to make a better life for himself. Read On

Out Foxing Fox? Stop Koch Takeover of L.A. Times

Mike Hall
5/8/13
Charles and David Koch, the billionaire brothers who fund a number of extreme right-wing organizations and are major contributors to the tea party and bankrollers for host of anti-worker state ballot initiatives and legislation, now have their sights set on building a major media empire. They are expected to make a $600 million-plus bid to purchase the Tribune Co. and its eight regional newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, the Orlando Sentinel and the Hartford Courant, and more than 20 TV stations like WGN in Chicago and KTLA Channel 5 in Los Angeles.

Union rights dealt a blow again by appeals court
|
Reuters
May 7, 2013 at 11:57 AM ET
The National Labor Relations Board violated the law when it required U.S. businesses to put notices in their workplaces and on their websites informing employees of their right to unionize, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday.
A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit struck down the rule, finding that federal law prohibits the labor board from punishing a business for speech, or lack of it, as long as the business does not issue threats.
Freedom of speech "necessarily protects ... the right of employers (and unions) not to speak," Judge Raymond Randolph wrote for the appeals court.
In mandating the notices in 2011, a majority of the labor board appointed by President Barack Obama said that employees cannot fully exercise their rights unless they know what their rights are.

Lussi Walter Ab wooden alphorn
, handmade in Stans, Switzerland in 1973. This beautiful alphorn was used in the Swiss Ricola coughdrop commercial, then owned and played by Michael Thornton of the Colorado Symphony. It is in excellent condition. Handpainting on the bell shows the Swiss cross, edelweis and other flowers. It is 10 feet 4 inches long, and comes apart in two sections for portability. Ab alphorns are more rare, pitched higher than most alphorns. I will include the original wooden mouthpiece as well as a better alphorn mouthpiece sold to me by Marvin McCoy, as well as an adapter for use with a French horn mouthpiece. I also have a wooden shipping crate which i will include. Interesting note: Leopold Mozart wrote his alphorn concerto for Ab alphorn. I'm asking $2750 but will consider an offer. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
