Los Angeles Music Scoring Community Meeting
Los Angeles Music Scoring Community Meeting

For those involved in the music scoring community here in Los Angeles, we are seeing a great amount of work leave LA for other parts of the world. Orchestral recording in places like London are becoming the #1 choice for film producers and game companies. The reason is that places like London offer "buyout" recording options and Los Angeles and the AFM (American Federation of Musicians) does not. Orchestral recording is becoming so slow in LA that the scoring stages at Fox, Warner Bros and Sony may shut down "within 2 to 5 years" if we don't do something now. So, along with partners Michael Barry and Noah Gladstone of Cinesamples and Hollywood Scoring - we decided to start the conversation by hosting a meeting. Over 600 professional musicians, orchestrators, engineers and composers turned out to come to the event. Already, the meeting has resulted in a positive catalyst for discussion and we are hopeful this will bring a new positive change to the music scoring community in Los Angeles.

Editor's Note: The DMA  is not endorsing the motivations behind this meeting, but supports this necessary and open discussion.

Barry Fey is dead: Towering figure in Denver music scene passes away
Barry Fey
Barrty Fey
By Michael Roberts
Westword
Apr. 28 2013

We've just learned that Barry Fey, a larger-than-life figure who helped put Denver on the music-business map, has died.

At this writing, the circumstances of Fey's death have not been made public, but he has been ill of late. His personal Facebook page features a March 11 post that reads, "I am happy to tell you that Barry's surgery was a success. He is now in recovery and wants to thank you for your thoughts and prayers," with an April 24 followup noting "Barry is now home and doing well."

Whatever the specifics of his passing, there's no denying that Fey was among the most fascinating, and most controversial, figures in Colorado for decades. He more or less built the Denver concert scene with his own two hands, and his incredible will -- but he also had rageaholic tendencies that made him plenty of enemies during his time in the spotlight. Still, there's no denying that he was a born showman who put an indelible mark on Colorado for decades.

SPCO musicians ratify contract; concerts to resume May 9
MinnPost.com
By Pamela Espeland

On Monday, the musicians of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra accepted management's latest proposal and its conditions, which include a significant salary cut and the downsizing of the orchestra from 34 players to 28. After a lockout that began Oct. 1 and lasted 191 days, they will play their first official concert on May 9 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, a program of music by Schoenberg, Robert Schumann and Mozart featuring cellist Steven Isserlis and conducted by Thomas Zehetmair.

The lockout is over, but all is far from copacetic. Along with signing a three-year agreement, the musicians called for "the immediate commencement of a search for a new SPCO leader with proven orchestra management experience, and the vision and skill to substantially increase revenues."

Make Music For Free

To: Tamara Door, President & CEO, Downtown Denver Partnership
From: Pete Vriesenga, President, Denver Musicians Association
Re: Make Music Denver, 2013

Dear Ms. Door,

The Denver Musicians Association (AFM, AFL-CIO) represents 800 professional musicians in the region, from Colorado's largest performing organizations to those who perform in restaurants, weddings and at special events. Professional musicians play a very large role in sustaining a culture of entertainment and resulting economic benefit to Downtown Denver and surrounding communities.

Last year at this time I received an email from Stephanie Davidowitz offering to meet to consider how to involve the DMA in Make Music Denver. My April 28 reply applauded DDP for encouraging community members and amateur musicians to be a part of your Festival. I also offered a simple and gracious reminder that professional musicians should be fairly compensated for their services.

Nothing ever came from that effort and it's now confirmed that DDP is once again seeking professional musicians on the condition that they will perform for free. The only other change I note is that I have been removed from your mailing list.

We will continue to reach out to you with the hope of turning Make Music Denver into proud, community event that no longer exploits professional talents. Until such time we shall educate and warn our membership of the damage that DDP is inflicting on our industry.

Sincerely,

Pete Vriesenga, DMA President

I am excited to announce that I was just able to confirm two nights - May 24th and 25th, the last Fri and Sat of May - at Denver's great jazz venue Dazzle where I will be bringing in special guest and international drummer Kenwood Dennard to join my quartet. Kenwood and I were part of a nationwide tour in 1988 and this will be the first time we have performed together since that time. As the lead drum teacher at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Kenwood has fostered scores of upcoming musicians. In addition Kenwood has recorded and toured with the very best: Pat Martino, Sting, Miles Davis, Stanley Jordan, Maceo Parker, Whitney Houston, Chic Corea and Herbie Hancock to name a few!

If you can arrange to make one of these 4 shows (7 and 9 pm ea. night), you will not be sorry! Joining us will be the incomparable pianist Chuck Lamb (tours with Brubeck Bros) and Bijoux Barbosa on bass.

Bangladesh: Six Arrested in Building Collapse
Death Toll 377, but Hundreds Missing

Lily Gomes and Rukshana Yasmin, Solidarity Center staff in Dhaka, check on an injured garment worker. Photo courtesy of Solidarity Center

UPDATE 04/29/2013: The death toll as of this morning stands at 377 and hundreds of people remain missing, reports The New York TimesCNN reports that authorities have arrested six people: three factory owners, two government engineers and the owner of the building, Sohel Rana-a local-level leader of the ruling Awamil League- who was caught as he tried to flee the country.

You can show solidarity with garment workers in Bangladesh by going go to LabourStart to send your message demanding that the Bangladeshi government take urgent action to guarantee freedom of association and improve building and fire safety and the minimum wage for the more than 3 million garment workers in Bangladesh.

More than 300 workers now have been confirmed dead from Wednesday's building collapse in Bangladesh. Some 2,200 survivors have been pulled from the ruins of what is being called one of the worst manufacturing disasters in history. More than 3,000 garment workers were on the job when upper building floors pancaked on top of each other.

5 Things You Need to Know About the 'Comp Time' Bill
Flex This: Tell Congress, 'Don't Cut My Overtime!'

If you are one of the millions of workers who count on overtime to stretch your paycheck, including the 59% of US workers paid by the hour, it's time to tell House Republicans, "Don't cut my overtime with your so-called Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1406)."

The bill would allow employers to stop giving workers any extra pay for overtime work and instead substitute "comp time."

What would that mean for most workers?

1. "Comp Time" means a pay cut-Workers compensated with time off rather than cash would see a reduction in their take-home pay.

2. "Comp Time" means mandatory overtime-"Comp time" legislation would make mandatory overtime less expensive for employers. Under "comp time" legislation, employers may be able to receive the benefits of overtime work at no additional cost to themselves.

3. "Comp Time" means more unpredictable work schedules for employees-Making mandatory overtime cheaper for employers would keep workers on the job longer and result in more unpredictable worker schedules and, for workers with children, higher day care costs.

4. "Comp Time" undermines the 40-hour workweek-The only incentive for employers to maintain a 40-hour workweek is the requirement under the Fair Labor Standards Act that they pay a time-and-a-half cash premium for overtime. "Comp time" legislation, by contrast, would encourage employers to demand longer hours by making overtime less expensive.

5. "Comp Time" is not voluntary-Workers can be coerced into accepting "comp  time" and the employer has the ultimate authority to determine when a worker can use accrued  "comp time."

Call Congress today and tell your representative to oppose H.R. 1406: 1-888-866-2561.

Reich: 'Repeal the Sequester'
Photo: House Committee on Education and the Workforce, Development Democrats
Robert Reich explains in his blog this week why weak economic growth means we need to repeal the sequester. Below is a cross-post from Reich's blog.

Economic forecasters exist to make astrologers look good. Most had forecast growth of at least 3 percent (on an annualized basis) in the first quarter. But we learned this morning (in the Commerce Department's report) it grew only 2.5 percent.

That's better than the 2 percent growth last year and the slowdown at the end of the year. But it's still cause for serious concern.

First, consumers won't keep up the spending. Their savings rate fell sharply-from 4.7% in the last quarter of 2012 to 2.6% from January through March.

Add in March's dismal employment report, the lowest percentage of working-age adults in jobs since 1979, and January's hike in payroll taxes, and consumer spending will almost certainly drop.

Median household incomes continue to decline, adjusted for inflation. Another report out today showed consumer confidence fell in April.

Second, the recovery continues to be wildly lopsided. The only thing really keeping it going is the rip-roaring stock market. But the stock market only boosts the wealth of the richest 10 percent of Americans, who own 90 percent of stocks (including 401-K retirement accounts).

But no economy can maintain momentum just on the spending of the richest 10 percent.

Third, American exports can't possibly pick up the slack. In fact, they're dropping. Europe is falling into recession because of austerity economics. Japan is still a basket case. China's economy is slowing. Much of the developing world's economy is dependent on exports to the developed world-so don't hold your breath for developing countries to bail us out.

So what is Washington doing? Worse than nothing. It has now adopted the same kind of austerity economics that's doomed Europe-cutting federal spending and reducing total demand. And the sequester doesn't end September 30. It takes an even bigger bite out of the federal budget next fiscal year.

Earth to Washington: The economy is slowing. The recovery is stalling. At the very least, repeal the sequester.

You don't have to be an astrologer to see the dangers ahead.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
