David Zauder passed away on Tuesday, April 16th, 2013, at 1:38am, with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Zauder Brass, her husband, David S. Brass, and their two children Shannah and Adam; his son, Karl Zauder and Karl's daughter, Kaylee Zauder. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Beth Evergreen on Wednesday, April 24 at 11AM followed by a meal of condolence at the synagogue. A shuttle bus will be running from the former Albertson's parking lot (NW corner Stagecoach and Evergreen Pkwy) beginning at 10:30AM. Condolences can be sent to the Brass family: PO Box 499 Pine, CO 80470 kbrass@marykay.com.
Born in Krakow, Poland, and terrorized by the Nazi movement through his experiences in the Holocaust, David Zauder promised his father when he was on his death bed in the Plaszow Concentration Camp that he would survive and bear witness to the atrocities done to his family and all other victims who were affected by Nazi slavery. He promised that he would travel to America to contribute something worthwhile to the world and have religious freedom. After the war, he had his passage arranged to America, by his mother's sister, Aunt Anna Lucks-Holtz of Detroit, Michigan, and he gratefully moved in with her oldest daughter, Lillian Markle and her family.
He attended The New York Military Academy on a full ride scholarship for his trumpet playing, graduated at the top of his class and then enlisted and served in the US Army, stationed at West Point. David Zauder was successful in playing the trumpet under Leonard B. Smith's expert tutelage and earned the position of first trumpet with The Boston Pops, and then joined the Cleveland Orchestra as their first cornet and second trumpet. After earning his graduate degrees in humanities and business administration at Case Western Reserve University, while playing with the Orchestra full time, he then served as their Personnel Manager for 30+ years, and played in their brass section for 39 years. He was the longest tenured trumpet player, to date, in the orchestra's history.
He received many honors over the years but none more important to him than the honor of the Cleveland Orchestra's Distinguished Service Award. David also served on the faculty staff of The Cleveland Institute of Music from 1978-1995. He was the featured solo artist in 20 concerts at Blossom Music Center during the Blossom Festival Concert Band Fourth of July Concerts, as he was the Band's spiritual leader, since its conception in 1968. After retirement, in 2007, he made the move to Colorado to live with his daughter Karen and her family. He joined the Denver Musicians Association in 2008.
David Zauder was an amazing musician, a good friend, a teacher and mentor, a man with a very high work ethic and extreme professional commitment, a faithful father and a strong, constant and loving GrandDad. We will all miss him very much, for many reasons of our own, and we all share in common that he touched our lives deeply. He wished to honor you by sharing his story of survival and personal growth, through the book, "I Am a Standupster," written by his daughter. In lieu of flowers, David Zauder wished for you to remember him by making a donation to www.standupsters.com in support of his daughter's Holocaust Awareness and anti-bullying educational program.
TWIN FALLS * Rocky Starr, 89, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, in Twin Falls, Idaho. He is now with our heavenly father in Heaven.
Rocky was born in Butte, Mont., to John and Mary Ratkowski. He was raised in Canada, moving to the United States and joining the Army during World War II. After his discharge from the Army, he pursued his career in Western music as an entertainer and song writer. He had radio shows in Spokane, Washington and Denver, Colorado for many years. He also appeared on TV on the Western Stampede show. He had a big Western swing band in Denver for many years, playing many of the country clubs as well as the Stockmen's and Governor's Balls. After retiring, Rocky moved to Post Falls, Idaho. After his late wife, Delores, died he pursued his passion for gospel music. He performed in churches and met his current wife, Velma, in Twin Falls at a local church. They moved to Arizona, where Rocky connected with a cowboy ministry and travelled singing at cowboy church on ranches, in rodeo arenas and at sale barns.
His biggest love was singing and playing. He was his happiest in those times. His eyes would light up and he so enjoyed socializing with everyone. It was where his heart felt the most real. He knew music without being able to read it. He would listen to a record and could tell one what key it was in. He learned many songs by buying and playing a record, listening to a section over and over again, writing down every word from beginning to end of the original song. It was a painstaking process, but it was his way. Now he can once again join in with Stan Rutka, his accordion player and Lou Alonzi, his sax player, who have gone before to sing those songs again, and play that guitar. He so missed playing and singing in the last six years of his life, when the Alzheimer's first began to take hold of his brain. Rocky is survived by his wife, Velma; daughters, Terry (Dick) Dixon, Jené Starr and Toni (Chuck) Hoover; stepchildren, Jim (Bridget) Baker, Jeff (Teresa) Baker, and Wendy Baker; sisters, Lillian Rooks, Margaret (Ed) Swanson and Doris (Lee) Karvonen; seven grandchildren, several step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; his late wife, Delores; son, Rick Starr; daughter, Judy McCormick; and two grandsons, John Quick and Jimmy McCormick.
A celebration of life was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at the Twin Falls Reformed Church, 1631 Grandview Drive N. in Twin Falls. A reception followed the ceremony.
Donations may be made to the music ministry at Twin Falls Reformed Church. Family and friends are encouraged to share their memories at www.rosenaufuneralhome.com
Colorado Chamber Orchestra Gives Life to Markus Reuter's Todmorden 513
Colorado Chamber Orchestra - Todmorden 513 World Premiere Pledgemusic Campaign
Pledgemusic.com
April 20, 2013
Markus Reuter is a German composer, musician and producer who originally landed on PledgeMusic as a part of the rock trio Stick Men and their successful campaign for their new album.
Then, on Valentine's Day of this year, Markus joined forces with the Colorado Chamber Orchestra for an exciting and groundbreaking new campaign, the world premiere of Reuter's original composition, "Todmorden 513," orchestrated by the Orchestra's Music Director Thomas Blomster.
The world premiere of this incredible piece took place yesterday in Denver, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Because this PledgeMusic campaign is already past 100 percent, these guys were thankfully able to record and document this event, and you can get it now by Pledging on their campaign.
Before the world ever heard this piece live, we shot some questions to Markus and Thomas, and here's what they had to say:
Musicians and Airlines Are Squabbling Over Frequent-Flier Miles; 'He Could Have Played the Flute, But No'
Wall Street Journal 3/13/2013
Renowned cellist Lynn Harrell travels the world on two airline tickets-one for himself and one for his beloved companion, his $5 million, nearly 300-year-old cello. "Cello Harrell" gets its own boarding pass and even collects frequent-flier miles in its own account. Many cellos do, even for high school musicians.
But two seats don't always equal twice the miles. Delta Air Lines' DAL -0.79% frequent-flier rules only allow people, not musical instruments, to collect miles, and Delta has been auditing accounts to catch frequent-flier scofflaws. Violating the rules can draw a severe penalty: Delta wiped out not only Cello Harrell's SkyMiles account, but also Lynn Harrell's personal SkyMiles account last year. Total loss: half a million miles. And Delta banned him from its loyalty program. Read On
SPCO Musicians Vote to Consider Contract By Mail
Saint Paul, Minnesota (April 20, 2013) - The Musicians of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) said today they have voted to use a U.S. mail option to decide whether to ratify the Society's latest proposal. This will enable further clarification of language in that proposal and would also provide the opportunity for all Musicians to vote.
Musicians did ratify the American Federation of Musicians Integrated Media Agreement and its Addendum today, both of which were specifically negotiated for the SPCO.
The Musicians of the SPCO have been locked out for more than 24 weeks. Their contract expired September 30, 2012. Management imposed the lockout on October 21, 2012 following three weeks where the Musicians continued to "play and talk."
Dear Mr. Henson: Your lockout is the 'barrier to negotiations'
*The following is an open letter to Minnesota Orchestra CEO Michael Henson, in response to a MinnPost Q & A, "Michael Henson, MN Orchestra president: It's time for musicians to negotiate," published April 11.*

Boston's Low-Wage Workers Affected by City's Shutdown
While most attention in the Boston tragedy is rightfully focused on the victims of last Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon, the damage done by the terrorist attacks didn't end with the explosions or the subsequent shootout that led to additional deaths. Much of the city shut down during the manhunt for the terror suspects; and while most salaried employees could take the day off without losing pay, low-wage workers did not have that luxury. Other workers were forced to work long hours or brave dangerous conditions to get their jobs done.

Lussi Walter Ab wooden alphorn
, handmade in Stans, Switzerland in 1973. This beautiful alphorn was used in the Swiss Ricola coughdrop commercial, then owned and played by Michael Thornton of the Colorado Symphony. It is in excellent condition. Handpainting on the bell shows the Swiss cross, edelweis and other flowers. It is 10 feet 4 inches long, and comes apart in two sections for portability. Ab alphorns are more rare, pitched higher than most alphorns. I will include the original wooden mouthpiece as well as a better alphorn mouthpiece sold to me by Marvin McCoy, as well as an adapter for use with a French horn mouthpiece. I also have a wooden shipping crate which i will include. Interesting note: Leopold Mozart wrote his alphorn concerto for Ab alphorn. I'm asking $2750 but will consider an offer. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
