In Memory - Ed Krolick, Jr.

Ed Krolick and wife Bettye
Ed Krolick and wife Bettye

Ed Krolick was an accomplished musician, a passionate educator, a loving father and a great communicator. Few who were fortunate enough to see him perform on the string bass in an orchestral setting will forget his flamboyant style or his flowing white beard. Countless music students benefited from his firm discipline yet caring guidance. He was dedicated to his wife and children, and maintained an active correspondence with hundreds of friends, colleagues and family members.

Edward John Krolick, Jr., of Fort Collins, Colorado, died on March 23, 2013, at the age of 89. Ed was born on August 1, 1923, to Edward John Krolick and Helen Buczak Krolick, in Rochester, New York. His younger sister, Dorothy Florence Krolick, was born in 1925. He attended Henry Longfellow Grade School and Benjamin Franklin High School in Rochester, New York. He began playing violin in the 6th grade, and trombone and string bass in the 8th grade. Ed was the principal bass of the inter high school orchestra and principal trombone in the high school band.

After graduating from high school in 1941, Ed received a 4-year scholarship to Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He continued to live at home and walked to his classes at Eastman. When the draft began in 1942, Ed went to the Navy recruiting office with several friends in an attempt to sign up for the Navy band. No guarantees were made that he would be allowed to play in the band, so Ed walked out. Predictably, in February of 1943, Ed was drafted by the Army during his sophomore year at Eastman. He proudly served his country during World War II in Casablanca, Algeria and Italy, from Naples to the Brenner Pass. Ed was honorably discharged from the Army in January, 1946, and used the GI Bill to begin the second semester of his sophomore year at Eastman.

During his junior year at Eastman, a student in his Applied Psychology class, Phil Albright, asked Ed to join him on a double date. That evening Ed met Bettye Maxwell, a junior at Eastman who studied violin. The date eventually led to Ed's proposal of marriage, following a rousing game of ping pong, in the fall of 1947. Immediately following their graduations from Eastman, Ed and Bettye were married on June 26, 1948, in Columbia, Missouri. Phil Albright was the Best Man and Carol Harlan was the Maid of Honor. They spent their honeymoon at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. Soon after their graduation and wedding, Ed and Bettye earned positions with the San Antonio Symphony. While waiting for the orchestra jobs in San Antonio to begin in the autumn, they found themselves driving through Grand Lake, Colorado. On a whim, Bettye took a job as a waitress, and Ed as a bell hop, at Grand Lake Lodge. Thus began their love affair with Colorado. They returned for camping and hiking vacations as often as possible over the years, and eventually moved to Fort Collins to retire.

Colorado Symphony Orchestra

Gundar Bigherr, conductor
Magic Circle Mime Co.

A most unpopular guest conductor, Maestro Bigherr, has been murdered. everyone in the hall is a suspect and before the night is over, the murderer will strike again. The cast includes a fastidious detective, a mysterious "lady in red," a bumbling police sergeant, a guilty looking orchestra and a very nervous conductor. This concert is a splendid evening of classic film music and a delightfully different who-done-it murder.

The Listener

Scott O'Neil, resident conductor
Magic Circle Mime Co.

The conductor has planned to present a concert exploring the many art forms in which the orchestra is involved, but his efforts are complicated by the unexpected participation of two overly enthusiastic spectators. A bugle playing mime who wants to sing opera and a tap dancing ballerina are just part of the conductor's comic dilemma as two zany characters bring "the art of listening" to life.

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). Great food, great atmosphere and always a great night of big band music! Check our website (MetropolitanJazzOrchestra.org) for our calendar and to confirm each month's schedule.

Bad Policy: President Obama's Budget Cuts Social Security and Medicare

Yesterday the AFL-CIO learned President Obama's budget will cut Social Security and Medicare benefits for working families. The so-called "chained" CPI will cut Social Security benefits and middle-income seniors (people who made $47,000 a year and more) will be asked to pay higher Medicare premiums.

Boston Taxi Drivers Face Exploitation While Owners Make Millions

Boston's taxi system is riddled with "staggering exploitation and abuses," according to an in-depth exposé in The Boston Globe. Many of the city's 6,200 drivers are forced to pay nightly bribes for the keys to their cabs, start the shift already more than $100 in the red and are frequently charged with "phantom shortfalls" in the fares they deposit to the cab owners.

Evergreen Chamber Orchestra, 4/21 & 4/27
On Sunday April 21st I'll be conducting the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra in a wonderfully eclectic program. The concert includes: Eric Ewazen's Oboe Concerto Down a River of Time featuring Larry Beck the ECO's Principal Oboe with the Voice of the Wood Cello Quartet; Paul Creston's Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra with Peggy Lyon; William Bolcom's Four Cabaret Songs with Nadya Hill Soprano, and the Beethoven First Symphony. The soloists are all quite fantastic, and the orchestra has
William Hill
William Hill
been a joy to work with and is sounding really wonderful.

On Saturday April 27th Nadya and I will be performing a recital to benefit the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra. We will be playing a widely varied program which will include some opera arias, jazz, and world music compositions of mine. Nadya will sing and play violin, and I'll be playing piano and an interesting array of ethnic percussion instruments from South America, the Middle East, Africa, the British Isles, etc.

Conducting my friends in the ECO (including my wife Natalie) has made this a musical highlight of 2013 for me, and performing with our daughter Nadya has been one of the joys of my life since she was 4 years old. I hope many of you can join us for either or both of these events.

Tickets and more information for both events can be found at the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra website.

On a different subject; the Colorado Symphony has released my Symphony #3 for digital download, and it is now available at the usual websites like Itunes and Amazon.

Best wishes,

Lussi Walter Ab wooden alphorn
, handmade in Stans, Switzerland in 1973.  This beautiful alphorn was used in the Swiss Ricola coughdrop commercial, then owned and played by Michael Thornton of the Colorado Symphony.  It is in excellent condition.  Handpainting on the bell shows the Swiss cross, edelweis and other flowers. It is 10 feet 4 inches long, and comes apart in two sections for portability.   Ab alphorns are more rare, pitched higher than most alphorns.  I will include the original wooden mouthpiece as well as a better alphorn mouthpiece sold to me by Marvin McCoy, as well as an adapter for use with a French horn mouthpiece.  I also have a wooden shipping crate which i will include.  Interesting note:  Leopold Mozart wrote his alphorn concerto for Ab alphorn.  I'm asking $2750 but will consider an offer.  Call Sara Keene,  303-742-9205  or email  skeene89@hotmail.com

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish!  Or if it's carbon fiber?  I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area.  But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price!  Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
