Paying Taxes for Exposure ... or stipends?
What do Denver Arts & Venues and Augustana Arts have in common?
ANSWER: They're both publicly-funded and offer musicians "a stipend" for  prominent professional service.  Arts & Venues needs a band to play background music at a reception "for the Cultural Community" in Denver and Augustana Arts is offering a stipend to members of Musica Sacra to perform in Denver's Buell Theater.

Or would you rather "volunteer" to perform for the opening of a new Light Rail Station along RTD's new leg to Golden? Will this ever stop, or must we all resign to 'pay to play' even when public funds are involved? Many interests beyond the DMA should be joining in our fight to preserve Colorado's prevailing wage, but their silence is now deafening ... and funded.

National Symphony musicians' press release supporting SF Symphony musicians

For immediate release from the National Symphony Orchestra
Committee

March 20, 2013

The musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra stand in support of our esteemed colleagues, the musicians of the San Francisco Symphony, as they continue their courageous struggle for a just resolution to their labor dispute. After examining the facts available, it is very difficult for us in Washington, DC to understand what intentions the San Francisco Symphony management has that would be furthered by their hard-lined stance. It seems that those intentions are not artistic ones. We do fully understand, however, the intentions of world-class musicians to remain at the very top of their profession. We believe they fully deserve to retain and reasonably improve the compensation and benefits they have gained over decades of carefully measured progress, designed for the long-term healthy growth of the entire organization.

The wonderful musicians themselves are the treasure of the SFS institution and the entire Bay Area. Their orchestral performances are the core around which all the efforts of the institution should revolve. Symphonic music was designed for and remains at its most powerful and effective when performed live in front of audiences who are moved by its eloquence and power. The San Francisco Symphony has been playing for such audiences in Davies Hall, across the United States, and around the world for decades - and to great acclaim. The musicians want to be on stage performing. The public wants them to be on stage performing. We hope an agreement can be reached to accomplish that goal as swiftly as possible.
Chicago press release supporting SF Symphony musicians
For immediate release from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Members Committee

March 19, 2013.

The Musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra express our support for the Musicians for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in their effort to achieve a fair contract. As has been shown in international tours, recordings, and in front of a loyal and expanding audience in northern California, the San Francisco Symphony is one of the great orchestras of the world, and deserves financial support equivalent to its success and stature. This contract negotiation echoes what has become a familiar story across the nation. Many orchestras, regardless of their financial condition, have faced lockouts, strikes, and devastating cuts in personnel, wages and benefits. The similarity in goals, methods, and language used by their employers, reflects an ideologically driven collusion to severely reduce the standard of living of many professional classical orchestral musicians. In recent years many orchestra boards seem more interested in construction projects and expanding staff than in supporting music and musicians.

We call on the communities of all of the orchestras that have recently suffered setbacks, including Detroit, Minnesota, Atlanta, Indianapolis, St. Paul, Spokane, Syracuse, Honolulu, Philadelphia, Louisville, and now San Francisco, to express support for classical music and the fine musicians who perform it, so that this wonderful music, which is such an important part of all of our lives, will be allowed to continue.

Colorado Symphony Orchestra

Gundar Bigherr, conductor
Magic Circle Mime Co.

A most unpopular guest conductor, Maestro Bigherr, has been murdered. everyone in the hall is a suspect and before the night is over, the murderer will strike again. The cast includes a fastidious detective, a mysterious "lady in red," a bumbling police sergeant, a guilty looking orchestra and a very nervous conductor. This concert is a splendid evening of classic film music and a delightfully different who-done-it murder.

The Listener

Scott O'Neil, resident conductor
Magic Circle Mime Co.

The conductor has planned to present a concert exploring the many art forms in which the orchestra is involved, but his efforts are complicated by the unexpected participation of two overly enthusiastic spectators. A bugle playing mime who wants to sing opera and a tap dancing ballerina are just part of the conductor's comic dilemma as two zany characters bring "the art of listening" to life.

Being a musician is a good job, but that doesn't mean it's okay to go broke doing it. -David Byrne

They're just for hard hats. They peaked around the time Elvis was getting big. They killed Detroit. They've got nothing to do with you or me. They're a special interest - and they hate our freedom.

That's the kind of noise you pick up in 21st century America - in politics and popular culture alike - when you tune your station to the issue of trade unions. Union membership, and ensuing muscle, have been in steep decline in both the public and private sectors. Just look at Wisconsin's "right to work" push, the anti-teachers union "reform" movement, corporate union-busting, P.R. "messaging" firms hired by management to smear striking workers, hostility from the Republican right and indifference from a Democratic Party that's reoriented itself around professionals and Silicon Valley.

Also in decline: America's creative class - artists, writers, musicians, architects, those part of the media, the fine arts, publishing, TV and other fields - faced with an unstable landscape marked by technological shifts, a corporate culture of downsizing, and high unemployment.

So is it time for artists to strap on a hard hat? Maybe unions or artists' guilds can serve and protect an embattled creative class. With musicians typically operating without record labels, journalists increasingly working as freelancers as newspapers shed staff, and book publishing beginning what looks like a period of compression, unions might take some of the risk and sting out of our current state of creative destruction.

"Musicians are trying to negotiate this changing landscape," says Kristin Thomson, once a guitarist for the band Tsunami and an owner of indie label Simple Machines, now a director of the Future of Music Coalition. Many musicians ask the group how to deal with today's complicated mix of outlets and platforms, or what to expect from label support. "Others saw their mechanical royalties falling off a cliff. There are revenue steams out there, but they're all changing so fast. This is a difficult time for artists trying to understand it all. And there's a lot more competition because the barriers to entry are a lot lower."

Trumka: Perez a Strong Pick for Labor Secretary

Thomas Perez. Photo courtesy of mainjustice.com

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka reacted today to the news President Obama will nominate Thomas Perez as the new secretary of labor:

Working men and women will be well served by President Obama's choice of Tom Perez to lead the Department of Labor.

Throughout his career, Perez has fought to level the playing field and create opportunities for working people, whether in the workplace, the marketplace or the voting booth. He has worked to eliminate discrimination in housing, provide access to education and health care, end hate crimes, crack down on employers who cheat workers out of wages and expand our democracy by protecting the fundamental right of every American to vote. In the 1990's, he worked on the front lines of the effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform under the leadership of the great Senator Ted Kennedy-a job that will serve him well in today's drive for commonsense immigration reform.

, handmade in Stans, Switzerland in 1973.  This beautiful alphorn was used in the Swiss Ricola coughdrop commercial, then owned and played by Michael Thornton of the Colorado Symphony.  It is in excellent condition.  Handpainting on the bell shows the Swiss cross, edelweis and other flowers. It is 10 feet 4 inches long, and comes apart in two sections for portability.   Ab alphorns are more rare, pitched higher than most alphorns.  I will include the original wooden mouthpiece as well as a better alphorn mouthpiece sold to me by Marvin McCoy, as well as an adapter for use with a French horn mouthpiece.  I also have a wooden shipping crate which i will include.  Interesting note:  Leopold Mozart wrote his alphorn concerto for Ab alphorn.  I'm asking $2750 but will consider an offer.  Call Sara Keene,  303-742-9205  or email  skeene89@hotmail.com

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish!  Or if it's carbon fiber?  I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area.  But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price!  Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
