"Colin Gieg (bass) was born in San Mateo, California and raised in Bakersfield where he studied piano at age 7, followed by guitar and then bass in high school. Moving to Los Angeles in 1960, Gieg studied at Westlake College of Music, the Los Angeles Conservatory and was a student of the renowned Ralph Peńa. This start prepared Gieg for a career in California which included performing with the Four Freshmen, Sue Raney, Don Ellis Jazz Orchestra and bassist for several years with Johnny Mathis.
Gieg's musical inertia was temporarily interrupted by a stint in the army, after which he moved to Denver. That was in 1970, and he has since performed at numerous jazz parties and festivals as well as national and international tours. Some of the many major artists Gieg has performed with include: Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Chet Baker, Teddy Edwards, Ken Peplowski, Houston Person, Peter Appleyard, Carl Fontana, Clark Terry, Bill Watrous, Plas Johnson, Sylvia Sims, Ralph Sutton, Peanuts Hucko and Flip Phillips just to name a few." SF Symphony musicians go on strike
Joshua Kosman San Francisco Chronicle March 13, 2013
Musicians of the San Francisco Symphony went on strike Wednesday, just a week before a planned tour of the East Coast that would have seen the orchestra perform in Carnegie Hall and other venues.
The musicians, who are represented by Local 6 of the American Federation of Musicians, have been playing without a contract since Feb. 15.
The key issues in the strike are financial, said violist David Gaudry of the players' negotiating committee.
"This is about the money," he said. "Their stated goal in the new contract is for it to cost less than the last one. But at the same time, we find that there have been raises for Executive Director Brent Assink and several other members of top management."
""Our musicians are the center of our organization and are among the most talented in the world. We are working with the union representing the musicians and a federal mediator to develop a fair agreement that recognizes the musicians' stature as one of the top orchestras in the country, but one that does not compromise the future artistic quality or financial stability of the institution," Assink said in a statement last week. Donate an instrument during Colorado Public Radio's Annual Instrument Drive
Share the Gift of Music March 1-16, 2013
You can change a child's life by donating an instrument during Colorado Public Radio's (CPR) Annual Instrument Drive. For three years now, DYAO is teaming up with CPR to find playable instruments to donate to Colorado schools.
If you have a band or orchestra instrument in good condition, please bring it to any of 13 drop-off locations in Denver, Boulder, Golden, Pueblo and Grand Junction from March 1-16, 2013. Find the full listing of locations at www.cpr.org.
Donated instruments will be repaired by the Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology (CIOMIT) so they are in the best playable condition when schools receive them. Colorado Public Radio works with Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation to identify and match available instruments with school music programs in need.
Learn more about CPR's Annual Instrument Drive and watch a video to see how one donated instrument made its way into the hands of a fifth-grade student at www.cpr.org.

Recess Appointments Ruling to Be Appealed
By CHARLIE SAVAGEPublished: March 12, 2013 NY Times
Terence F. Flynn's appointment to the National Labor Relations Board is among those at issue.
WASHINGTON - The Obama administration has decided that it will appeal to the Supreme Court a sweeping ruling by an appeals court in January that President Obama violated the Constitution when he bypassed the Senate in making three recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board last year.
While the dispute grew out of a narrow and novel legal question - whether brief "pro forma" sessions by the Senate could prevent the president from making recess appointments during a lengthy winter break by lawmakers - the appeals court blew past that issue and called into question nearly two centuries of recess appointments by presidents of both parties.
The Postal Service's plan to end Saturday mail is an attack on the future of this great institution, on teh customers who need it, and on the employees who support it!
The american people depend on Saturday delivery to keep us connected and to facilitate our business. Eliminating a day of delivery will hit rural communities, small businesseses, and senior citizens the hardest. This isn't a change the American people wan or that the Postal Service needs.
Make your voice heard! Join the March 24the Delivering for America rally to preserve six-day delivery. Tell Congress to stop dismantling the Postal Service so it can keep delivering for America.
"Wealth Inequality in America," a six-minute video produced by a YouTube user named "Politizane," casts an interesting angle on the plummeting savings rate. Set to depressing piano music and packed with crystal-clear animations, it gives a powerful snapshot of the American economic landscape. Noting that "The top 1 percent own nearly half the country's stocks, bonds, and mutual funds," the video goes on to contrast those impressive holdings with the rest of the country. By comparison, it points out, the bottom 50 percent of earners own only 0.5 percent of those investments.
At the beginning of February, Jobs with Justice joined our member organization 9to5 Colorado as they introduced the Family Care Act (HB13-1222), which would allow more family members to take unpaid time off work to care for a sick family member or loved one. Now, we need your help to get this bill through the Colorado House. The vote is tomorrow, so there isn't much time. It's going to be a close vote, so every call and e-mail counts!

New Reporst Allege Widespread Human Rights Abuses in Temporary Worker Recruitment System
Like many people who come from other countries to work in the United States, Juan José Rosales left his homeland in Mexico to make a better life for himself, trading the prospect of a better financial situation for a temporary amount of time away from. He said a recruiter promised him he would get between $7 and $8 an hour while working in the fair and carnival industry on an H-2B visa. And that's when things went wrong.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
