In Memory - Helen Hope January 30, 1927 - January 21, 2013
| Helen Hope, First Harpist with the Denver Symphony and Colorado Symphony passed away on January 21st. Helen was born to Joseph Sylvester Brennan and Helena Katherine Phillip on January 30, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This little family, in which she was an only child, was pretty well to do in that they had a row house and an automobile. Both of her parents were devoted to her care and well-being. As a young girl, Helen wanted to play the harp and she begged her father. He promised her if she played the piano for three years, she could play the harp. Helen held him to his promise and around 12 years old, she began harp lessons. This was the beginning of her life's path. Helen attended Catholic Grammar School, Catholic High School and Catholic College. In grammar school, Helen met a boy from the neighborhood, Len. Len said he was really impressed by her Daddy's car. Joe Brennan was impressed that Len loved baseball. Helen and Len were best friends. They shared Friday night card games and late night sandwiches. They eventually went to dances and football games and Len became her best friend and boyfriend. The path Helen and Len divided when Len went off to war and Helen came to Denver in September of 1946. Helen's hard work paid off when, at only 19 years of age, she begame Solo Harpist with the Denver Symphony. Helen came to Denver on her own, finding a boarding house to live in, and beginning a new career. Having to support herself, she made $25 a week with the Symphony and supplemented by teaching at Lamont School of Music, at Denver University.

Legislators Urge Audit of Minnesota Orchestral Association
|
Posted on March 7, 2013 by momc-editor Musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra The following letter was sent to Jim Nobles, Office of the Legislative Auditor from 100 members of the Minnesota House of Representatives. The Minnesota Orchestra is a world class performing arts organization. It adds immeasurably to the quality of life in Minnesota through its performances both at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis and in school and communities across the state. The State of Minnesota invested significantly in a fact and future of the orchestra as a world class entity. It places Minnesota on the map nationally and internationally and adds to our region and state's economic competitiveness. In recognition of that status, the State of Minnesota invested $16 million in public monies though bonding dollars to assist in the remolding of the lobby of Orchestra Hall and provides operating funding through ongoing Legacy dollars. We now find the return on those investments threatened by the lockout of the musicians and the logjam that the orchestra management and musicians' representatives currently find themselves in. News reports and review of the Orchestra President Michael Henson's 2010 legislative testimony raise questions about the Orchestra's financial situation with the public and legislators when requesting and receiving $14 million in bonding for a new lobby on Orchestra Hall. After the House Legacy hearing of February 18, 2013, there remains concerns about the public's investments in the state's largest arts organization.

David Pierson returns as Jacksonville Symphony Association president
|
Posted: March 3, 2013 The Florida Times Union By David Bauerlein
The financially struggling Jacksonville Symphony Association is bringing back David L. Pierson as president, hoping to restore the financial and attendance growth the orchestra boasted during his previous tenure from 1988 to 1996. Pierson will replace Stacy Ridenour, who has been executive director of the symphony association since 2008. Ridenour will move to a new role focused on fundraising. The management changes, effective March 18, come on the heels of a consultant saying the organization must revamp its management before it has a shot at boosting revenue to close recurring budget shortfalls. Video: "Wealth Inequality in America" Goes Viral
|
By Bruce Watson Posted 1:09PM 03/04/13
 | Wealth Inequality in America |
"Wealth Inequality in America," a six-minute video produced by a YouTube user named "Politizane," casts an interesting angle on the plummeting savings rate. Set to depressing piano music and packed with crystal-clear animations, it gives a powerful snapshot of the American economic landscape. Noting that "The top 1 percent own nearly half the country's stocks, bonds, and mutual funds," the video goes on to contrast those impressive holdings with the rest of the country. By comparison, it points out, the bottom 50 percent of earners own only 0.5 percent of those investments.

Swiss Voters Approve a Plan to Severely Limit Executive Compensation
|
By RAPHAEL MINDERPublished: March 3, 2013 GENEVA - Swiss citizens voted Sunday to impose some of the world's most severe restrictions on executive compensation, ignoring a warning from the business lobby that such curbs would undermine the country's investor-friendly image. The vote gives shareholders of companies listed in Switzerland a binding say on the overall pay packages for executives and directors. Pension funds holding shares in a company would be obligated to take part in votes on compensation packages. In addition, companies would no longer be allowed to give bonuses to executives joining or leaving the business, or to executives when their company was taken over. Violations could result in fines equal to up to six years of salary and a prison sentence of up to three years. Read On |

Eric Holder's stunning admission
|
The most amazing thing just happened. The Obama Administration finally admitted the truth of what we've been saying all along: giant Wall Street banks have become too big to prosecute. In testimony on Wed, March 6, US Attorney General Eric Holder-the nation's top cop-said, "I am concerned that the size of some of these institutions becomes so large that it does become difficult for us to prosecute them ... I think that is a function of the fact that some of these institutions have become too large."1 Exactly. Tell President Obama to end the Administration's policy of treating Wall Street banks as too big to fail and too big to jail by taking immediate steps to break up the big banks and prosecute the criminals who used them to destroy our economy. Now we understand why the Obama Administration has failed to bring criminal charges against a single major Wall Street bank or executive for systemic fraud that brought down our economy. When the Attorney General openly admits that the most powerful members of society won't be prosecuted for even the most egregious of crimes, we are in deep trouble as a nation. Remember that we gave Wall Street bankers $700 billion in TARP bailouts and $2.5 trillion in investments, loans, and guarantees to shore up their business (and outrageous bonuses)2 on the theory that letting them collapse would create a generation-long Depression. In return it seems fair to demand accountability for the actions that brought us to that point. Now it turns out the Administration never had any intention of seeking accountability. Stand up and add your voice in demanding the Administration end the policy of "too big to fail/jail". This petition was created on SignOn.org, the progressive, nonprofit petition site. SignOn.org is sponsored by MoveOn Civic Action, which is not responsible for the contents of this or other petitions posted on the site. Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish! Or if it's carbon fiber? I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area. But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price! Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
