In Memory - Charles "Toby" Daily
|
 Charles Ray Daily was born February 25, 1935 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to the late Edward C. and Sarah (Andrew) Daily. The nickname "Toby" was given to him as a child by his beloved uncle, Walt Andrew, and it served him well all his life. Toby attended Ponca City schools where his love of music was nurtured. He played his first dance job while in high school. Attending Phillips University in Enid, OK, he continued his study of and performance of music, graduating in 1957.
Toby taught music at all levels from Kindergarten through 12 during his career, starting in Oklahoma and Kansas. The family relocated to Broomfield, Colorado in 1964, where he was employed by Adams County School District #14 until his retirement in 1990. Throughout his teaching career he nurtured and inspired a love for music to countless students, including his own daughters.
In Denver, he discovered a large fraternity of professional musicians who became wonderful friends and remained very important to him throughout his life. Toby played in jazz combos and large dance bands on trombone and bass. He was an excellent singer of big band ballads and loved doing it. Classical music was also a favorite and a huge highlight for him was attending a live Pavarotti concert.
After retiring, Toby enjoyed traveling with his wife, Marilyn, and spent winter months with a community of close friends in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Toby passed away Friday, February 15, 2013, in Boulder after suffering a severe head injury. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marilyn; three daughters: Joy Chitwood of Fallon, NV; Joni Bettge of Broomfield, CO; and Kimberly Matagora of Eugene, OR; son-in-law Reginald Matagora; seven grandchildren: Zachary Chitwood of Berlin, Germany; Nathan and Caitlin Chitwood of Reno, NV; Rachel Matagora of Eugene, OR; R.J. Matagora of Riverside, CA; Sara Bateman and Grace Diehl of Broomfield; three great grandsons; brother, Donald Daily of Ponca City, OK; aunt Wilma Andrew; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and his treasured Yorkie, Mikey. He also leaves to mourn a multitude of neighbors and dear friends, both here and in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 22, at 10:00 am at the Christian Church of Broomfield, 12601 Sheridan Blvd, Broomfield CO. A Celebration of Life will be held following the services at The Chateaux at Fox Meadows, 13600 Xavier Lane, Broomfield, CO, from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests any memorial contributions be directed to the Boulder Humane Society or the Salvation Army.

In Memory - Charles Bacino
|
 Charles Bacino, 73, passed away in Mesa, Ariz., on Dec. 21, 2012. He was born Aug. 31, 1939, in Pueblo, Colo., to Sam and Dorothy Bacino. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survived by his daughters, Shari Ann (Brian) Snow, Kathy (Max) Frommer of Mesa, Ariz., and Betsy (Shawn) McElroy of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, Father Ben and Jim Bacino; aunt, Kathy Bacino; and grandchildren, Matthew (Amanda), Emily and Luke Snow, Sam and Stephanie Frommer, Erica and Noelle McElroy. He graduated from Pueblo Catholic High in 1957, then attended Pueblo Junior College and the University of Denver, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education and performance. He then retired after having taught in the Denver area for 33 years. He began to teach music privately and also was a musician in the Denver area. He was an accomplished musician, performing with an accordion and playing the piano at Epcot-Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and playing background music in a film starring Andy Garcia. He performed at the Venetian and Maggiano's in Las Vegas, and was a solo accompanist for Luciano Pavarotti at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. He was a loving husband and father. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 5, 2013, at St. Mary's Help of Christians Church. Inurnment, Roselawn Cemetery at a later date. Reception to follow at St. Mary's Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society or in care of your favorite charity. Online condolences may be made at bacinoj@hotmail.com

Minnesota Orchestra lockout continues into fifth month

Minnesota Orchestra musicians have been locked out for five months, with few signs that it will be ending anytime soon. Orchestra President Michael Henson joined The Daily Circuit Friday, Feb. 15 to talk about the state of the negotiations, and what the major hurdles are to an agreement.
Management never meant for the lockout to last this long, he said.

The Haydn Quartet Slam 2012-13 is a community wide celebration of all 83 Haydn String Quartets in metro Denver and in Colorado. 30+ cultural partners are participating during this yearlong venture to present all of Haydn's string quartets at venues across the state. On Tuesday, March 12, we are pleased to present the Hwang-Ainomae-Hsu Trio (featuring Yumi Hwang-Williams, violin, Silver Ainomae, cello, and Hsing-ay Hsu, piano) in a program of music by Part, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Schubert.

Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. Community Band Seeking New Members
|
Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

ECO has gained recent recognition for its quality performances and creative programming under the musical leadership of Dr. David Kish and a highly active Board of Directors. OPEN AUDITIONS - ALL SEATS ARE BEING AUDITIONED
Auditions for Prospective Members: each audition will last for approximately five minutes. You are asked to prepare two excerpts or etudes of contrasting styles that demonstrate your best playing (no more than 2-3 minutes each). You may select an audition time by visiting the link below. Genesis Church provides a central location for both prospective members who in live in the foothills or metro-area. It is located north of Bowles and Simms behind the Rite Aid at 5707 S. Simms Street, Littleton 80127.
Please note that the concertmaster position is NOT open whereas all other positions are.

Metro Community Band Openings
|
Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. Lussi Walter Ab wooden alphorn, handmade in Stans, Switzerland in 1973. This beautiful alphorn was used in the Swiss Ricola coughdrop commercial, then owned and played by Michael Thornton of the Colorado Symphony. It is in excellent condition. Handpainting on the bell shows the Swiss cross, edelweis and other flowers. It is 10 feet 4 inches long, and comes apart in two sections for portability. Ab alphorns are more rare, pitched higher than most alphorns. I will include the original wooden mouthpiece as well as a better alphorn mouthpiece sold to me by Marvin McCoy, as well as an adapter for use with a French horn mouthpiece. I also have a wooden shipping crate which i will include. Interesting note: Leopold Mozart wrote his alphorn concerto for Ab alphorn. I'm asking $2750 but will consider an offer. Nedine Jarvis probably logged 40 years as a violist in the DSO/CSO. She is selling a bass that was played by her son. It is late 19th/early 20th C. German or Czech/ It is a 5/8 size. Olds Opera Trombone, made about 1959 at the F.E. Olds factory in Fullerton. For those of you who may not be familiar with this instrument, it has a large bore and an 8 ˝ inch bell. It is finished in nickel silver and comes with two mouthpieces. You really can't over blow this trombone. For a classic instrument, it is in perfect playing condition with a beautiful original factory case. If you are interested please feel free to call me. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
