In Memory - Bob Litterell (1946 - 2013)
|
Bob Litterell passed away on January, 30. He was born in Las Animas Colorado.
Bob started playing violin at age seven and began playing the harp as a teenager. He studied harp with Mary Bickford and has since studied privately with Susann McDonald. In addition to serving in the Wichita State University Orchestra, his alma mater, he served as solo harpist with the Kern Philharmonic Orchestra in Bakersfield, Calif. for a number of years. In the summer of 1999 he performed the Parish Alvars Concertino for Two Harps and Orchestra with the Radio Prague Symphony at the Seventh World Harp Congress in Prague. Bob has traveled the world extensively looking for unknown and out of print music for the harp. He has made five trips to Egypt and brought back completely unknown works written for the harp by Egyptian Composers. While there, he lectured and coached at the Cairo Conservatoire. In addition to his original compositions Bob was equally at home in the field of popular music. He was also a trained chef and loved cooking and hosting dinner parties. Memorial Service, 2-4 PM, Saturday, February 16, 2013 at his residence. For more information contact Bob's sisters Mary or Shirley at 720-420-0284. View & Sign Guestbook

Colorado Chamber Orchestra Looks to Crowdfunding for New Collaboration
|
Todmorden 513 World Premiere Recording
 | Marcus Reuter |
We are presenting a world-premiere of German composer Markus Reuter's Todmorden 513 on April 18 2013. Todmorden 513 is a unique contemporary composition of an hours duration for orchestra. It is 513 measures long and is a Concerto for Orchestra, with each of the 50 string, woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians performing an individual solo part. These solo parts are in turn each a part of a trio or quartet, all joining together to form the orchestra. The Colorado Chamber Orchestra is very excited to present this enigmatic, mysterious, genre-bending music and would like to record and document this event for posterity. This is where you come in. Your support is needed to realize the recording and documentary of this event. Your help will offset the costs of the orchestra musicians, studio and production. We offer many different levels of support in the right hand column. Ranging from a basic download, to a CD/DVD package, a composer circle dinner, or an autographed limited 48-page hardcover edition of the musical score, giving you an insight into the composer's and orchestrator's vision. Please pledge generously to this wonderful ground-breaking project. More Information - PledgeMusic
Join us in this adventure! Nikki Tsuchiya & Thomas A. Blomster p.s. 5 % over goal will be donated to the Youth Orchestra of the Rockies, which helps build community and enrich the lives of young Colorado musicians.

|
 | Marcus Renninger |
Marcus Renninger is a Horn player who is looking for work in Denver and the surrounding area. While Marcus never left the world of music, he returned to the art of Horn playing last fall after spending a few years as a guitar player playing, recording and touring the western half of the US with the rock band, Fingers of the Sun. Once judged as the 7th best high school horn player in Pennsylvania by the PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) in 2004, Marcus now returns to horn playing with a renewed sense of determination and discipline. Strengths include exceptional sight reading ability, excellent relative pitch and a good emotional understanding of musical phrasing. Samples of Marcus's playing include excerpts of Brahm's Symphony #3 and the Mozart Trio. You can also hear Marcus play with the Colorado Chamber Orchestra on March 2nd at Littleton United Methodist Church: 5894 S. Datura St.

The Post Office is not broke--and it hasn't taken any of our tax money since 1971
| Answering the lies that privatization zealots and FedEx are peddling Hightower Lowdown March 2012, Volume 14, Number 3 Consider $.50. What does that buy these days? Not a cuppa joe--that'll cost you two bucks at Starbucks, and even McDonald's wants a dollar for a small. Nor will it get you a newspaper, a pack of gum, a shoeshine, or a bus token. And Walmart, which promotes itself as the palace of cheap, sells practically nothing for a half-buck. There's one place, though, where you can get a steal of a deal for a fifty-cent piece: your local post office. Put down two quarters or five dimes there, and you'll get a first-class stamp in return... and you'll even get a nickel in change. Slap that 45-cent stamp on a letter, drop it in the mailbox, and our nation's postal workers will move your missive across town or clear across country--hand delivering it to any address in America within three days (42 percent arrive the very next day, and 27 percent more get where we want them to go within two days).

Big Band Boogie Bash @ the Mercury Cafe, 2/16
|
Benefiting Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts
Over 130 young musicians are coming together to breathe new life into the perception of Big Band music, all in support of CCJA! Six college bands and three high school groups will participate in a day long big band festival. The event began in the 70's and used to feature almost all professional groups, but CCJA has re-invented it with a focus on youth. It is concert style, and will feature a large range of styles of music. There will be music for all ages and tastes. Let's make their their efforts worthwhile: - We need help spreading the word about the event. Please forward this email, or post on facebook, or call and invite your friends to come with you. - We need items for the silent auction that the CCJA board is hosting at the bash. We already have some great items, such as passes to the Telluride, Vail, and Jazz Aspen festivals, but if you know any businesses or individuals that would be willing to donate a good or service, that would be fantastic. - We have business sponsorships available for the event. It includes an ad in the program, PR materials on PR table, a link on our website, and 6 tickets to the event. - We need volunteers for the door, merchandise table, silent auction, stage set-up, and tear-down. Tickets to the Bash are $15 general admission, and $10 students / 55+, and allow you to stay for as long as you'd like. They are available at the door, and online at jazzarts.org. All proceeds directly benefit CCJA programs. Schedule: 1:00 Metropolitan State University Jazz Ensemble 1 2:00 Colorado State University Jazz Ensemble 1 3:00 Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) 3:45 University of Northern Colorado Lab 1 4:45 DU Lamont Jazz Orchestra 5:45 Kent Denver Jazz Ensemble 6:30 CU Boulder Jazz Ensemble 1 7:30 Fairview HS Jazz Ensemble 1 As you can see from the line-up, this is going to be a fantastic event. Where else can you hear almost all of the college bands in one place?! If you have any interest in attending any of those schools, it's also a great way to hear them and meet the directors and students. Thanks for your support.

FOR SALE OR RENT / MISC. |
Lussi Walter Ab wooden alphorn, handmade in Stans, Switzerland in 1973. This beautiful alphorn was used in the Swiss Ricola coughdrop commercial, then owned and played by Michael Thornton of the Colorado Symphony. It is in excellent condition. Handpainting on the bell shows the Swiss cross, edelweis and other flowers. It is 10 feet 4 inches long, and comes apart in two sections for portability. Ab alphorns are more rare, pitched higher than most alphorns. I will include the original wooden mouthpiece as well as a better alphorn mouthpiece sold to me by Marvin McCoy, as well as an adapter for use with a French horn mouthpiece. I also have a wooden shipping crate which i will include. Interesting note: Leopold Mozart wrote his alphorn concerto for Ab alphorn. I'm asking $2750 but will consider an offer. Call Sara Keene, 303-742-9205 or email skeene89@hotmail.com

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish! Or if it's carbon fiber? I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area. But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price! Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
