[Spokane] Symphony Blues - Low Wages, No Benefits, But Plenty of Applause
|
by Paul K. Haeder December12th,2012 Spokane Coeur D'Alene Living Magazine Musicians of all people supersede the adage "You get what you pay for." They've been underfed and under compensated for millennia; however, when cities lose their ballet, opera, orchestra and theater troupes, many can imagine the crows ready to pick at the last remnants of culture. "If you look right now at the vestiges of the Roman Empire or the Greek Civilization, the first things you encounter are objects of art. They tell you the history of the time. They set trends in the world. You don't see the generals, the armies; you don't see the politics, you see the art. And I think it is a shame to cut that. Any major civilization has invested in art, in music. It is a shame that a country like the U.S., which is still very wealthy-at least the one percent of the population that doesn't pay the taxes-they would rather not invest heavily in the arts. That's how the cities go to pieces, when you don't have the institutions there, when you don't have a heartbeat. There are many cities like this." That is what Detroit Symphony Orchestra violinist Marian Tanau recently said, as he reflected on the strike he and his fellow musicians approved two years ago. Pretty heady stuff, and not surprisingly, this sort of discourse centers around the life and death of the arts in cities like Detroit, Indianapolis, Bucharest and, yes, even Spokane. Edo de Waart, Jorja Fleezanis spoke about Minnesota Orchestra lockout before weekend concerts. Article by: GRAYDON ROYCE , Star Tribune Updated: December 15, 2012 - 9:38 PM
Edo de Waart and Jorja Fleezanis, former stars of the Minnesota Orchestra, were in Minneapolis for a concert Saturday night at the University of Minnesota's Ted Mann Concert Hall. The concert, produced independently by orchestra musicians locked out since October in a contract dispute with management, will be repeated Sunday afternoon.
"My heart is still with this orchestra," De Waart said in an interview. He was music director from 1986 to 1995. "I was here for nine years, so it was not brain surgery to show my support for the musicians." Read On

Please Contribute to Labor's Community Agency
| TIS THE SEASON... As we approach the holidays, for many of us it's a festive time of year as we look forward to spending time celebrating with our family and friends. Yet, there are many people in our communities that this time of year is not "happy", "wonderful", "joyous", nor "cheerful". Each year, Labor's Community Agency asks for help to replenish the Agency's Emergency Assistance Fund, which is primarily used to assist union members, their families, and the community with emergency assistance during time of crisis or need. Hunger, homelessness, and despair continue to affect our community. Requests for help continue to be unprecedented with the poor economy and continued job loss and Labor's Community Agency has become overburdened. You can help... your generosity will make a difference. Please help us help those in need by contributing to Labor's Community Agency's Annual Emergency Assistance Fund Donation Drive. Together we can bring hope to those in need!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
