'A Remarkable 10 Year Old Girl'

Kaiya loves all kinds of music and wants to learn the piano, clarinet and... tuba
|
We see tens of thousands of kids each year with "inside the orchestra" but at Iowa Elementary School in Aurora last Monday-- in early December of 2012, one charming fifth grader stood out from all the rest.
Kaiya is not your ordinary 10 year old. During our concert, she sang along with Chad Reagan, our baritone from Central City Opera. Kaiya knew the Italian lyrics from 'Largo al factotum' the "Figaro" aria we showcase at every program. She knew the words and the orchestra members took note!!!
Later, when we were doing the guest conductor portion of the show-- Wayne Templeman, one of our cellists, literally jumped out of his seat telling me to call on this little girl who was conducting a three pattern with her body and soul! Needless to say Kaiya was a brilliant conductor. I had to find out who this person was and where she found her passion for music at such a young age.
Turns out Kaiya plays guitar-- her father is her instructor, and she refers to him as a "master" guitarist. She loves chords and one of her favorite bands is Metallica (really? a fifth grader into a heavy metal band??) Kaiya started guitar at age seven, so she has been playing for three years. She practices one to two hours each day, owns three guitars, one of which is a Gibson, which I believe she favors...
She discovered the opera aria from a TV show and watched it over and over memorizing the lyrics. Kaiya loves all kinds of music and wants to learn the piano, clarinet and... tuba-- wow!?
The best part is that Kayia wants to be a composer, and I believe with the nurturing from her remarkable father and her Iowa Elementary music teacher, Ms Peacock, she will achieve her goal.

Met Opera to Sell $100 Million in Bonds as Revenue Drops

The Metropolitan Opera faces growingoperating losses as it prepares to sell bonds for the first timesince its founding in 1883.
Losses from operations swelled 7 percent last season to$135 million, according to bond documents. It was the thirdconsecutive operating-loss increase.
After contributions, bequests and other income from donors,the Met said it broke even in 2011-12. The $100 million intaxable bonds will be used to repay $63.2 million in loans fromBank of America Corp.
Most of the remainder will pay for unspecified "operatingcapital," said Eric Wild, a managing director in the public-finance group at Morgan Stanley (MS), which is managing the bondsale.

If you're skeptical about the future of symphony orchestras in the United States, Bruce Ridge would love to chat with you.
The chairman of International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians was in Salt Lake City this week to speak with Utah Symphony | Utah Opera musicians and artistic advisory committee. Ridge's nonprofit organization helps represent 51 member orchestras nationwide, including the Utah Symphony.
Ridge is considered an international expert in arts administration, as well as a professional symphony musician who plays the double bass. He often finds himself in the middle of symphony crises. He's consulted and commented widely on the recent turmoil engulfing the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, where musicians are in a lockout over unresolved disputes with board and management.
But there's a another side to the health of symphony orchestras, Ridge said, which isn't often talked about in the post-recession landscape of the classical music world.
Pulling out his iPad in the Abravanel Hall lobby, Ridge runs through the numbers: Chicago Symphony's latest fund giving campaign ended at a record level, St. Louis Symphony recently reported its best financial year of the past 10 years, and San Diego Symphony's operating budget is up 135 percent since 2003, with ticket sales at an all-time high.

Walmart Bars Volunteer From Playing Trumpet

Robert Gibbs says the Christmas carols he was playing on his trumpet at the Potsdam Walmart is something he has done for years as a volunteer Salvation Army bell ringer at other Walmart locations without a problem.
But this year, when he started playing, he was told by management to stop.
"Frankly, I was a little bit perturbed. I've done this for a lot of years and I'm a professional," said Gibbs.

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups.  The Denver Young Artists Orchestra (DYAO) is excited to announce its search for a new Music Director. Please feel free to forward this e-mail.

Colorado's premier youth orchestra is seeking an experienced Music Director to oversee its music programs for young musicians.
The Denver Young Artists Orchestra Association (DYAO) serves approximately 250 musicians from throughout the Denver metro area and beyond. Founded in 1977, the non-profit organization serves student instrumentalists ranging in age from 8 to 23 through its primary orchestra as well as satellite training orchestras and string ensemble programs. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Music Director is responsible for overseeing DYAO's overall artistic vision and conducting Saturday morning orchestra rehearsals and four to six concerts annually. The Music Director also works closely with the Executive Director and Orchestra Manager to select and manage DYAO's assistant conductors, coaches, and judges. In addition, the Music Director serves as an important ambassador for the organization, interfacing with parents, donors and other stakeholders, and helping to recruit high-caliber students into the organization.

Five Points Jazz Festival Seeks Musicians
|  10th Annual Five Points Jazz Festival is now seeking bands for May 18, 2013. Interested artists should complete the application located at http://artsandvenuesdenver.com/events-programs/five-points-jazz-festival submissions are being accepted through December 31, 2012 and all artists will chosen by January 15, 2013.
The 2013 Five Points Jazz Festival will be held on May 18th from 11a.m. - 8p.m. This free community event celebrates the music, culture and history of Denver's historic Five Points neighborhood, with performances highlighting many of Denver's finest jazz musicians. Performances and activities take place in numerous venues in Historic Five Points, with food and art vendors along Welton Street.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the New York City Teachers Retirement System today pledged $1 billion in new investments for infrastructure projects, including improvements to transportation, power, water, communications and housing in New York City and throughout the state that was hit hard by the massive November storm.
The $1 billion pledge is part of a multiyear Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Commitment to Action made by the AFL-CIO, AFT and partners in 2011.

The Longmont Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Robert Olson, has the following vacancies for the second half of the 2012-13 season with subsequent seasons to be negotiated separately.
Assistant Concertmaster - base pay $150/per quarter with at least 2 concerts this season sitting Concertmaster at $100/per service with, on average, 6 services per concert.

Metro Community Band Openings

Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
