South Florida Musicians Association Encourages Boycott of Palm Beach Symphony
|
 | Maestro Ramon Tebar |
With no explanation, The Palm Beach Symphony has replaced virtually all of the orchestra's musicians for the 2012-2013 season. Many of the musicians had performed for the Symphony for nearly a decade or more. According to Symphony Executive Director Michael Finn, music director Ramon Tebar is in charge of the orchestra roster, and therefore would be responsible for the replacements. These musicians have dedicated their time, talents and efforts for many years to building the Symphony, despite its offering much less than full-time work or the benefits of secure working conditions. The decision to replace nearly the entire roster of musicians is further mystifying in light of the musicians' loyalty to the organization and consistent praise in the press. Therefore, South Florida Musicians Association is encouraging patrons, donors, and musicians to demand an explanation from the Palm Beach Symphony management and Board and to boycott the Symphony until this obvious wrong is rectified.

MN Orchestra musicians vote 'no confidence' in CEO Henson
|
November 27, 2012
by Marianne Combs
Locked-out musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra today issued a no-confidence vote in Orchestra President and CEO Michael Henson.
Management says it needs large salary cuts for the players to keep the orchestra financially viable. Musicians say the cuts will severely damage the Orchestra.
After attempts failed to agree on a new contract management locked out musicians October first and there have been no negotiations since.
A release from the musicians this afternoon says Henson's removal is key to resolving the current lockout. Musicians negotiation committee member Tim Zavadil says "The lack of partnership between Henson and the Musicians since his arrival has been dysfunctional and adversarial due to his management style and lack of leadership ability."

Is union helping or hurting film, TV composers?
| Work continues to leave L.A. for London, Prague By Jon Burlingame Variety, 11/18/12 On Thursday night more than 500 musicians, composers and others active in the Hollywood music biz heard a panel of experts warn that film, TV and videogame scoring continues to leave L.A. because producers are unwilling to meet union demands. If work continues to dry up at the current rate, they speculated, one or more of the three remaining large scoring stages (Fox, Sony, Warner Bros.) could close "within the next two to five years," leaving London as the new scoring capital of the world and cheaper locations like Prague and Bratislava as second and third choices. Union officials, who were not present at the meeting, are disputing the version of facts as presented Thursday night. They say that although work is down, a larger percentage of current film work is actually staying in the U.S. They deemed it "no coincidence" that the meeting was held just as the American Federation of Musicians was negotiating with the AMPTP for a new film and TV scoring contract. Please Contribute to Labor's Community Agency
| TIS THE SEASON... As we approach the holidays, for many of us it's a festive time of year as we look forward to spending time celebrating with our family and friends. Yet, there are many people in our communities that this time of year is not "happy", "wonderful", "joyous", nor "cheerful". Each year, Labor's Community Agency asks for help to replenish the Agency's Emergency Assistance Fund, which is primarily used to assist union members, their families, and the community with emergency assistance during time of crisis or need. Hunger, homelessness, and despair continue to affect our community. Requests for help continue to be unprecedented with the poor economy and continued job loss and Labor's Community Agency has become overburdened. You can help... your generosity will make a difference. Please help us help those in need by contributing to Labor's Community Agency's Annual Emergency Assistance Fund Donation Drive. Together we can bring hope to those in need!

Nov 28, 2012 7:20 am (PST) . Posted by: "Craig Rifel" gatcello
Hello. I'm a bass player in the Detroit Symphony. I have ridden with a colleague along the Blue Ridge Parkway and throughout the Smoky Mountains many times, in Quebec around the Gaspe Peninsula, and on a cold rainy trudge
through the Everglades during an orchestra tour once--never again.
I would like to find other musicians who would be interested in meeting up and doing some riding together, with lively conversation and who knows what else at day's end. I'm open to location ideas.
Are you interested? Email me. Let's see what we can put together for next summer.

Walmart Admits Bangladesh Factory Was Making Clothing For Retailer Before Fire
|
By FARID HOSSAIN and JULHAS ALAM
Huffington Post
11/26/12
DHAKA, Bangladesh - The garment factory in Bangladesh where a weekend fire killed at least 112 people had been making clothes for Wal-Mart without the giant U.S. retailer's knowledge, Wal-Mart said. Wal-Mart said the Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory was no longer authorized to produce merchandise for Wal-Mart but that a supplier subcontracted work to it "in direct violation of our policies." "Today, we have terminated the relationship with that supplier," America's biggest retailer said in a statement Monday. "The fact that this occurred is extremely troubling to us, and we will continue to work across the apparel industry to improve fire safety education and training in Bangladesh." The blaze on Saturday was one of the deadliest fires at a garment factory in Bangladesh and highlighted how the country's garment factories often ignore safety in the rush to supply major retailers in the U.S. and Europe. More than 300 people have died over the past six years in garment factory fires in the South Asian country.

Lame-Duck Session of Congress: Myths and Facts
| Nov 28, 2012 Kenneth Quinnell In the recently convened "lame-duck" session of Congress, senators and representatives will take on a number of issues that could have major consequences for working families and retirees. Congress is considering benefit cuts for Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare and members are looking at cutting taxes for the wealthy even further. Any deal that Congress makes, though, should be based on facts and not the myths that have sprung up around taxes, the deficit and the earned benefit programs. Here are a few of the key myths and the truth behind them.

Hostess Brands Asks for $1.8 Million in Executive Bonuses
| Gluttony: Hostess Brands Asks for $1.8 Million in Executive Bonuses for Those Who Wrecked the Company 11/29/2012 Jackie Tortora While Hostess Brands Inc. is shedding 18,000 of its workers' jobs, top level executives who ran the company into the ground are asking for bonus pay to the tune of $1.8 million. Today, Hostess executives plan to ask the judge, who is ruling in the liquidation proceedings, for bonus pay "to retain the 19 managers during the liquidation process, which could take about a year." AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says: Despite public backlash, Hostess still intends to pay $1.8 million in bonuses to executives who wrecked an iconic American company and killed more than 18,000 jobs. This is further proof that the hedge funds currently in charge of the company have their values completely upside down.
Wall Street apologists have tied themselves in knots to put the entire blame on workers for the damage done at Hostess by corporate greed and mismanagement. They'll spin the news again, but regular Americans won't buy it for a minute. The electorate rejected Mitt Romney and his corporate culture at the ballot box. When will these guys learn?

NYC fast food workers' strike
|
By lunch time, the CEO of Wendy's will have earned more than $11,009.95. That's more than I take home in a year as a regular Wendy's employee.1
That's why I joined hundreds of fast food workers in NY and walked out of the Wendy's at 125th and Lexington in New York City to demand higher wages and the right to form a union.
Despite the stereotype, most of us are not teenagers working after school. We're grown adults with kids of our own and bills to pay. Many have worked in fast food for years and never received a raise from $7.25 an hour while the companies we work for make massive profits.
Going on strike is a big deal for folks like me-and to win we need the support of the general public. That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org and hope you'll sign and share it with your friends.
Click here to tell the CEOs of Wendy's, McDonald's and other big fast food chains to pay their employees a living wage.
If we can get 50,000 people to sign the petition by our Day of Solidarity on December 6th, we'll hand-deliver your signatures to the CEOs at their headquarters all over the country. We know this is a David vs Goliath battle-workers against a $200 billion industry-but we can win if Americans from all walks of life stand in solidarity with us.
I am only one of more than 50,000 New Yorkers working in the fast food industry. With average annual incomes as low as $11,000, many fast food workers must turn to public assistance to make ends meet. We are striking because we believe fast food companies should pay workers enough to be able to pay for basic needs like food, clothing, and rent.
Companies like McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, and Pizza Hut reap huge profits and shower CEOs with exorbitant compensation, while many of their employees qualify for food stamps-and it's time to do something about it.
Don't stand for the minimum wage. Stand for something greater. Sign the petition today.
Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.
Thanks!
-Joshua Williams
1. Emile Brolick earned $4,580,146 in 2011. Assuming a 40 hour work week, this breaks down to $2,201/hr. Joshua took home $10,920.

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish! Or if it's carbon fiber? I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area. But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price! Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
